If your YouTube stream is smooth at 30 fps but drops frames at 60 fps, first find out whether the problem is network delivery or local rendering and encoding. In OBS, compare the dropped-frames and performance indicators during a representative 60 fps test, then check YouTube Live Control Room for ingest errors. The right fix depends on which signal changes: lowering bitrate may help an unstable connection, while freeing GPU capacity or reducing output resolution may help local overload.
Diagnose the kind of frame loss before changing settings
A 30 fps stream working does not, by itself, prove that the encoder is the bottleneck—or that the network is. At 60 fps, OBS has more frames to render and encode, but the stream also has its own bitrate and connection demands. OBS distinguishes network dropped frames from local rendering or encoding performance problems. [OBS connection troubleshooting] [OBS encoding performance troubleshooting]
- Establish a fair comparison. Test 30 fps and 60 fps with the same scene, game load, encoder, resolution and network connection. Include movement and audio like the real broadcast; YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion before going live. [YouTube encoder settings]
- Watch OBS statistics during the 60 fps test. Note whether network dropped frames rise, or whether local rendering or encoding performance worsens. Compare with the 30 fps baseline rather than relying only on how the preview looks.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Its stream-health indicator and error messages report problems detected in the incoming stream, including configuration issues. [YouTube live streaming errors]
- Check the encoder output and local recording, if available. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder output and CPU load. If local output is healthy but the stream sent to YouTube has trouble, investigate the outbound connection. [YouTube live troubleshooting]
Keep the first comparison controlled. If you change frame rate, resolution, bitrate and encoder preset together, you will not know which change affected the result.
If OBS shows network dropped frames
OBS says network dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Start by testing the bitrate and connection path rather than changing an encoder preset without evidence. [OBS connection troubleshooting]

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Lower bitrate, one step at a time. Hold resolution and frame rate fixed and retest. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point; this is a rule of thumb from OBS, not a YouTube target or proof that the route to YouTube’s ingest server is stable. A speed test’s total throughput alone cannot establish route stability.
- If drops continue, reduce resolution while keeping 60 fps. This tests whether the stream load is the limiting factor while preserving the higher frame rate. YouTube advises lowering the selected resolution when available bandwidth is insufficient. [YouTube encoder settings]
- Check the network path and software. OBS lists VPNs and network-optimization software as possible sources of interference, and potential faulty equipment includes modems, routers, cables, network cards, switches and extenders. If you have reason to suspect a wired cable or device, test that component; OBS advises consulting your ISP if unsure before replacing hardware. [OBS connection troubleshooting]
- Use dynamic bitrate only as a workaround. OBS can lower bitrate automatically when the connection cannot keep up. This can reduce image quality and does not fix the underlying connection issue, so confirm whether the route is stable rather than treating dynamic bitrate as a cure. [OBS connection troubleshooting]
If rendering or encoding performance worsens
If network dropped frames stay stable but OBS reports performance trouble or the local output is choppy, reduce the work required of the game and OBS. OBS recommends freeing GPU resources, lowering output resolution, and trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working. [OBS encoding performance troubleshooting]
- Free GPU capacity. Cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync, lower demanding game graphics settings, and close other GPU-heavy applications.
- Lower OBS output resolution but retain 60 fps. Retest before lowering frame rate. If this improves performance, it suggests resolution-related rendering or encoding workload was contributing.
- Try 30 fps if local performance still fails. If this stabilizes output, 60 fps may exceed available rendering or encoding headroom for that scene and workload. It is a useful diagnostic and fallback, not the only possible remedy.
- Compare local and outgoing results. Check encoder output and CPU load. Healthy local output with trouble only on the outgoing stream points you back toward the connection rather than proving a local encoding problem. [YouTube live troubleshooting]
Verify YouTube ingest settings and bitrate
YouTube’s listed settings support up to 60 fps for the covered protocols. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum of four seconds. Match the stream’s resolution and frame rate to the encoder configuration. YouTube can detect resolution and frame rate automatically in Live Control Room by default; with a custom stream key, manual selection is available. [YouTube encoder settings]

The table shows YouTube’s published H.264 ingest figures. They are configuration recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection will remain stable at those bitrates.
| Resolution and frame rate | Minimum H.264 bitrate | Recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These figures apply to H.264; YouTube publishes separate entries for AV1 and H.265/HEVC, so check the row for your selected codec rather than reusing H.264 values. The table also shows why it is not accurate to assume that moving from 30 to 60 fps always doubles bitrate: the published values vary by resolution and codec. [YouTube encoder settings]

At 60 fps, a two-second keyframe interval corresponds to 120 frames; at 30 fps, it corresponds to 60 frames. If the encoder setting is expressed as a frame count, make sure changing frame rate does not inadvertently change the actual interval. YouTube’s error guidance flags resolution mismatches, excessive frame rates, incorrect bitrates and keyframe/GOP configuration as possible causes of stream issues; it also says a closed GOP is required for optimal transcoding. [YouTube live streaming errors]
Choose the next test based on what it tells you
| Signal or test | What to test next | What the test can tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Network dropped-frame counter rises | Lower bitrate; if necessary, lower resolution while retaining 60 fps. | Whether the configured stream load or connection stability is implicated. Lower settings can reduce image quality or detail. |
| Local rendering or encoding performance worsens | Free GPU capacity, reduce game load or output resolution, then compare with 30 fps. | Whether the workload can be reduced enough to retain 60 fps, or whether 30 fps is a more stable choice. |
| YouTube reports an ingest configuration error | Correct the indicated codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, resolution or frame-rate mismatch. | Whether the incoming configuration matches YouTube’s expectations; it does not resolve local overload or an unstable network route. |
Change one setting per test and note the result. That makes it possible to keep a fix that addresses the failing signal without sacrificing resolution or frame rate unnecessarily.

Common symptoms and fixes
- 60 fps fails, and network drops rise: test a lower bitrate first, then lower resolution while retaining 60 fps; inspect the network path if instability remains.
- Network counter stays stable, but the local stream is choppy: free GPU resources and lower game load or OBS output resolution. Test 30 fps if 60 fps remains unstable.
- YouTube flags stream health or configuration: read the exact Live Control Room error and check matching resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec and keyframe/GOP settings.
- Dynamic bitrate keeps the stream going but quality fluctuates: treat it as a temporary workaround and continue investigating connection stability.
- Changing to 30 fps fixes the issue but the cause is unclear: repeat controlled tests, changing either local workload or stream settings—not several at once—to distinguish performance headroom from connection capacity.
