YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 34 Mbps for 1440p at 60 fps. These are YouTube’s H.264 ingest targets, not a special NVENC bitrate chart.
Recommended YouTube Live H.264 bitrates
Choose the row for your stream’s ingest resolution and frame rate. The table lists YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates; the platform also publishes separate minimums. Use the recommended target when your connection can sustain it reliably. These values do not apply automatically to AV1 or H.265.
| Resolution | Frame rate | Recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K) | 60 fps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) | 30 fps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p | 60 fps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p | 30 fps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p | 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p | 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p | 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p | 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p | 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p | 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
For example, a 1080p60 gaming stream should target 17 Mbps, while 1440p60 should target 34 Mbps. YouTube recommends choosing quality according to connection reliability and testing upload speed. Its live-stream guidance also recommends RTMPS for ingestion. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.
Set NVENC and bitrate in OBS
- In OBS, open Settings, then Output. Set Output Mode to Advanced if you need the full encoder controls.
- On the Streaming tab, choose NVIDIA NVENC H.264 as the encoder. The bitrate table above is specifically for H.264 ingestion.
- Set Rate Control to CBR.
- Set Bitrate to the YouTube recommended value matching your output resolution and frame rate.
- Set Keyframe Interval to 2 s. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Choose an output frame rate up to 60 fps. Configure the resolution and frame rate you intend to send to YouTube, then use the matching bitrate row.
- In YouTube Studio’s live control room, create or select the stream and use its stream key in OBS under Settings → Stream. Keep the key private; anyone with it may be able to stream to your channel. YouTube explains stream keys and latency options in its stream management guidance.
YouTube’s advanced encoder recommendations also include progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, square pixels, and Rec. 709 for SDR. Preserve relevant OBS defaults where available rather than changing low-level options without a specific reason.

Pick resolution and frame rate your connection can sustain
1080p30 versus 1080p60
YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Choose 60 fps when smoother motion benefits the game or other content and your upload connection can sustain the higher target; otherwise, 30 fps can be the steadier choice.
1440p30 versus 1440p60
The recommendations are 21 Mbps at 1440p30 and 34 Mbps at 1440p60. The jump is substantial, so weigh the extra detail or motion smoothness against your reliable upload capacity.

When the recommended target is unstable
Do not keep a high resolution and frame rate if the connection cannot reliably carry the matching bitrate. Reduce output resolution or frame rate and use that row’s bitrate instead. YouTube does not specify a universal upload-headroom percentage in the cited guidance; judge reliability with an upload speed test and a representative test stream rather than relying on a fixed margin.
NVENC options beyond bitrate
OBS provides additional NVENC controls such as preset, tuning, multipass, profile, and adaptive quantization. The appropriate choices depend on GPU, OBS version, workload, and performance goal, so there is no single preset that is best for every stream.

OBS’s NVENC guide dates to 2018; treat its example choices as historical guidance rather than a current universal optimum. The OBS Advanced NVENC Options page documents newer controls in OBS 31.0, including VBR with target quality and Ultra High Quality tuning, which significantly reduces throughput and is not recommended there for gaming. Consult the OBS Advanced NVENC Options page for current option descriptions and the OBS NVENC guide for background on the controls.
Test before going live
- Run an upload speed test on the connection and computer you will actually stream from.
- Start a private or unlisted test stream with gameplay or other motion and audio similar to the planned broadcast.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health messages while the test runs. Check for unstable ingestion or dropped frames before relying on the setup for a live event.
- If the stream is unstable, lower the output resolution or frame rate and set the bitrate to the corresponding H.264 recommendation; test again.
YouTube specifically advises testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream. Its live system transcodes the incoming stream into multiple formats for viewers, so the OBS ingest bitrate is not a promise that every viewer receives that exact bitrate.

Common bitrate and NVENC problems
- Stream health reports connection trouble: The upload connection may not sustain the selected bitrate. Test the connection, then lower resolution or frame rate and choose the corresponding target.
- Picture looks poor despite a strong connection: Confirm that the bitrate matches the actual output resolution and frame rate, and that OBS is sending H.264 when using this table.
- Settings are rejected or do not match YouTube guidance: Verify CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, and check the stream’s configured resolution and frame rate.
- OBS cannot connect to the live event: Check that the selected YouTube stream is live-ready and that OBS uses the correct stream key. Replace a key in OBS if you reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Changing a preset causes performance problems: Return to a stable preset and adjust only with your GPU and workload in mind. OBS’s advanced controls have different throughput and quality trade-offs.
