How to Stream 4K 60fps Nature Footage on YouTube Live Without HDR Washout

Match your HDR source and encoder, use YouTube’s 4K60 bitrate guidance, and verify the stream on HDR playback—not just in Live Control Room.

To stream 4K 60fps nature footage on YouTube Live without HDR washout, make sure the camera really outputs HDR in PQ or HLG, then configure a compatible encoder to preserve that same standard. For OBS, YouTube specifies hardware HEVC encoding, Main 10, HDR enabled, P010, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG. Set 3840×2160 at 60 fps, use a bitrate your connection can sustain, and verify the result on an HDR-capable playback device—not only in Live Control Room, whose preview does not display HDR colors.

What you need before going live

HDR is a chain, not a switch: the source, encoder, stream signaling, and playback device must all handle compatible HDR. A camera marked “HDR” is not sufficient by itself. Check its manual for actual PQ or HLG output support, then use that same standard through encoding. YouTube’s live HDR instructions identify OBS 30.1 or later for the documented OBS workflow. YouTube’s Stream HDR video on YouTube guidance describes the requirements.

  • HDR source: camera or other video source producing genuine PQ or HLG HDR.
  • Compatible encoder: hardware HEVC encoding with a 10-bit-capable output path for YouTube’s OBS settings.
  • Stable upload: enough sustained bandwidth for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec bitrate, with headroom for normal network variation.
  • HDR playback check: access to an HDR-capable screen or device so you can judge the delivered image rather than a non-HDR preview.

Configure OBS to preserve the source’s HDR

Use YouTube’s documented OBS HDR workflow and match each setting to the camera’s actual output. Menu labels can vary by OBS version and encoder; if a setting is absent, verify that the chosen hardware encoder and source format support it rather than substituting an unrelated value.

  1. Confirm the camera’s HDR standard. Consult the camera manual or output information to determine whether it sends PQ or HLG. Do not infer the transfer standard from a generic HDR label.
  2. Select a compatible hardware encoder. Choose HEVC hardware encoding and set the profile to Main 10. YouTube’s OBS instructions call for HDR enabled and P010 (4:2:0) pixel format.
  3. Set the color space and transfer function. Select Rec. 2100 PQ or Rec. 2100 HLG to match the source. The documented signaling uses BT.2020 color primaries and a BT.2020 non-constant-luminance matrix, with PQ or HLG transfer as appropriate.
  4. Keep the chain consistent. Do not signal PQ for HLG footage, HLG for PQ footage, or HDR metadata for an SDR source. Incorrect grading or metadata can yield incorrect HDR results; changing labels cannot convert SDR footage into genuine HDR.
  5. Choose the ingest route supported by your encoder. YouTube’s HDR guidance documents OBS paths using RTMPS and HLS, and gives specific requirements for compatible hardware encoders using HLS. Follow the instructions for the selected encoder, protocol, and stream key; do not assume every encoder supports both routes.

Set 4K60 resolution, bitrate, and keyframes

Set the output to 3840×2160 (2160p) at 60 fps. YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed 2026, recommends 35 Mbps for H.264 at 4K/2160p60 and lists a 10–40 Mbps range for AV1 or H.265 at that resolution and frame rate. These figures describe YouTube’s guidance, not a guarantee that a particular connection or encoder can sustain the stream. YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions provides the table.

Setting 4K/2160p at 60 fps guidance
Resolution and frame rate 3840×2160 at 60 fps
H.264 bitrate 35 Mbps recommended by YouTube
AV1 or H.265 bitrate 10 Mbps minimum to 40 Mbps maximum in YouTube’s table
Rate control CBR
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds
Latency at 4K Normal latency; YouTube says low-latency optimization is unavailable at 4K

Choose a codec and bitrate your encoder and stable upload connection can maintain. Nature footage with leaves, water, wildlife, or camera pans can contain substantial detail and motion, so test using scenes representative of the actual broadcast. A nominal speed-test result does not show whether the connection will remain stable throughout a live session.

Run a test and confirm HDR in playback

  1. Start a controlled test stream—private, unlisted, or otherwise limited as appropriate—and include typical motion and audio.
  2. Review YouTube stream health for ingest or encoding warnings while the test is running.
  3. Open the stream on an HDR-capable device. Check the playback quality menu for the HDR badge or option and assess the image there.
  4. Check a non-HDR device separately if relevant: viewers without supported HDR playback receive an SDR version, which may look different.

Live Control Room’s preview does not display HDR colors, so it cannot by itself establish whether the delivered HDR image is washed out. For playback details, see YouTube’s guidance on uploading High Dynamic Range (HDR) videos, which also explains why incorrect HDR grading or metadata can cause incorrect results.

Troubleshoot a washed-out or incorrect image

First establish what the viewer is actually receiving. A washed-out appearance in Live Control Room alone is not a reliable HDR diagnosis. Check on an HDR-capable playback device and look for the HDR indicator; a viewer on an unsupported display receives SDR.

Symptom What to check Next action
Preview looks flat or washed out, but playback has HDR Whether the judgment is based only on Live Control Room Use actual playback on an HDR-capable screen; the control-room preview does not display HDR colors.
Playback appears washed out on an HDR-capable device Source transfer standard, encoder transfer selection, and color signaling Confirm source and encoder both use PQ or both use HLG as appropriate; verify BT.2020 primaries and matrix, and avoid invented or mismatched metadata.
No HDR badge or option appears Whether the source is genuine HDR, encoder configuration is compatible, and the selected ingest path follows YouTube’s instructions Check the camera’s PQ/HLG support and OBS’s HEVC Main 10, HDR, P010, and Rec. 2100 settings; then retest with the encoder’s supported route.
Stream health reports instability Whether upload capacity is consistently sufficient for the chosen codec and bitrate Reduce bitrate or use a more stable connection, then repeat a representative test before the broadcast.
4K low-latency option is unavailable Whether the stream is configured at 4K This is expected in YouTube’s guidance: 4K streams use normal latency rather than low-latency optimization.

YouTube’s published live guidance does not provide a complete fault tree for every camera, encoder, and display combination. If the settings above match but the result remains wrong, isolate the chain by checking the camera’s recorded HDR output, encoder signaling, and playback on a known HDR-capable device.
