To connect an encoder to YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a live stream in YouTube Studio, copy its server URL and stream key into the matching encoder fields, then check the preview before going live. Treat the key like a password: if it is exposed, reset it and update the encoder. For a 24/7 broadcast, plan separately for local recording and viewer rewind—YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, and DVR may be limited or unavailable.
Before you set up a continuous stream
YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements include a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and creators must be at least 16. Check that the channel is eligible before scheduling or configuring an encoder. Restrictions can relate to channel status, copyright, age, or content and safety rules. Do not try to evade a live-streaming restriction by switching to another channel; YouTube says that can count as circumvention.
YouTube documents a limit of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. These are platform limits, not a measure of how reliably a stream will stay live. YouTube does not promise a general 24/7 uptime or guarantee that an always-on broadcast can run indefinitely.

Set up the stream key in Live Control Room
- Open YouTube Studio. Select Create → Go Live. Choose the Stream tab for an immediate encoder broadcast, or use Manage to schedule one. Create a stream or select an existing stream.
- Choose visibility deliberately. Set the stream to public, private, or unlisted according to who should be able to watch it. YouTube notes that privacy defaults vary by age group, so confirm the setting instead of assuming a default.
- Copy the connection details. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. In the encoder, paste each into its matching field. If the encoder offers a YouTube preset, use it where appropriate, but still verify the URL and key.
- Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it. In Live Control Room, click the lock icon beside the stream URL to view the RTMPS URL, then enter that URL in the encoder. RTMPS encrypts the video feed in transit; it does not make it safe to disclose the stream key.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. For a scheduled broadcast, start sending from the encoder, wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, and check the video and audio. When ready, click Go live in YouTube.
- End the broadcast in both places. End the event in YouTube, then stop the encoder. Test the whole start-and-stop process before relying on it for a continuous channel.
YouTube describes stream keys as resembling a stream’s password and address: the key is created in YouTube and entered into the encoder. You can create a custom key for reuse. Follow YouTube’s Manage live stream settings and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder guidance if the available controls differ in your account.
Protect the stream key
- Enter the key only in the intended encoder. Do not post it in chat, screenshots, public configuration files, or support forums.
- Keep configuration exports and screenshots private; they may contain the key along with other connection details.
- Give channel administration access only to trusted people. YouTube says only an owner or manager can reset the stream key.
- If you suspect exposure, reset the key in Live Control Room and immediately replace the saved key in the encoder. Until it is updated, the encoder will be sending with an invalid key.
RTMPS is RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection and encrypts the feed between encoder and YouTube. It protects the transmission in transit, not a key copied into the wrong place or shown publicly. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

Configure bandwidth, recording, and failover
Leave upload headroom
YouTube recommends leaving 20% of available upload bandwidth unused beyond the total outgoing bitrate. Include primary and backup encoder traffic where applicable. This is setup guidance, not a guarantee against drops. If the connection cannot sustain the combined traffic, lower the outgoing bitrate or improve the available upload capacity before going live.
Keep a local archive
Record the broadcast locally if you need a dependable copy. YouTube says a stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its archive guidance recommends keeping a local recording as backup. Do not count on one complete YouTube archive for a continuous 24/7 transmission.

Test failover instead of assuming it works
If you have a backup encoder or failover setup, test it before the broadcast. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable to confirm that the player rolls to the backup. A backup path only helps if it is configured, available, and verified for your setup.
Monitor the public watch page and playback on a mobile device during operation, and check audio and video continuously. Keep personal information out of the picture and audio, including location clues. YouTube says it will not ask streamers for moderation privileges in a stream.

What changes when the stream runs past 12 hours
Automatic archiving is not assured
YouTube’s archive guidance says streams under 12 hours can be archived automatically, while streams beyond 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a 24/7 broadcast, make your own local recording plan if you need an archive; do not promise viewers that a full replay will appear on YouTube.
DVR rewind may be limited
DVR is separate from archiving. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, so viewers may not be able to rewind freely through a continuous broadcast. See Turn on DVR on live streams.

Test the workflow you actually need
YouTube’s documentation does not guarantee that splitting a continuous broadcast into multiple sessions will preserve uninterrupted viewing or meet every archive need. If you plan to use shorter sessions, verify the behavior in your own channel and check what viewers see between sessions. The platform’s event-preparation advice—encoder setup at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled start—is preparation guidance, not a 24/7 service-level promise.
Troubleshoot common connection and safety problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Live Control Room does not receive the encoder feed | Wrong stream URL or key, or the encoder is not sending | Compare the encoder fields with the current URL and key in Live Control Room. If you reset the key, replace it in the encoder too. |
| The encoder connects, but no preview appears | The stream may not be sending correctly, or the wrong stream was selected | Confirm that you selected the intended stream and check the encoder’s connection status, video, and audio output. Wait for the preview before going live on a scheduled event. |
| The stream drops or playback stutters | Available upload bandwidth may be insufficient for the outgoing bitrate, especially if a backup encoder also sends traffic | Check total outgoing bitrate against upload capacity, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and test any configured failover. |
| The stream key may have been exposed | It appeared in a public post, screenshot, or shared configuration | Reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder immediately. Review who has channel access. |
| A long broadcast has no complete replay or full rewind | YouTube may not capture streams exceeding 12 hours, and DVR may be limited or unavailable beyond that duration | Use a local recording for an archive and set viewer expectations about rewind; do not rely on a single YouTube replay for a 24/7 run. |
| Go Live is unavailable | The channel may not meet eligibility requirements or may have a current restriction | Check channel verification, age eligibility, and live-stream restrictions in YouTube’s help guidance. Do not use another channel to bypass a restriction. |
