If YouTube Live or OBS is dropping frames over Wi-Fi, first check which OBS counter is rising: network dropped frames point to a connection problem, while rendering lag or encoding lag point to PC workload. To test Wi-Fi fairly, stream from the same PC with the same encoder settings over Wi-Fi and Ethernet, then compare OBS’s network counter and YouTube’s stream health. A speed test helps, but it cannot guarantee a stable route to YouTube.
Identify which frames are being dropped
In OBS, open View > Stats and watch the counters while the problem is happening. The label matters: only a rising network-dropped-frames counter directly supports investigating the connection between your PC and the streaming service.
- Frames missed due to rendering lag: OBS is having trouble composing the video, often because the GPU is overloaded. This is not evidence that Wi-Fi is at fault.
- Skipped frames due to encoding lag: the encoder is not keeping up with the configured workload. Investigate encoding performance rather than treating it as a network symptom.
- Network dropped frames: OBS says these indicate an unstable connection to the remote service or one that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Wi-Fi is one possible contributor, not the only one.
OBS treats connection drops and encoding performance as distinct troubleshooting areas. See OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting and encoding performance troubleshooting.
Check the bitrate and upload headroom
Before testing Wi-Fi, record the encoder’s video bitrate, codec, resolution, and frame rate. Compare that exact combination with YouTube’s current live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations. For H.264, YouTube currently recommends 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are encoder bitrate recommendations, not guarantees of successful delivery; check the table for your stream’s exact settings because recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% room beyond the total stream bitrate. It also cautions that other devices or applications sharing the connection reduce the upload bandwidth available to your stream. Account for the total bitrate, including primary and backup streams when applicable, rather than comparing only the video bitrate with a speed-test result. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Test upload and compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
- Measure from the streaming PC. Run an upload speed test on the machine running OBS or your encoder. Note other active household or office network use, and repeat the test at a time that resembles your planned broadcast. A test is a snapshot of that moment, not proof that the full route to YouTube ingest will remain stable.
- Run a realistic Wi-Fi stream test. Use a private or unlisted test broadcast, and watch both OBS’s network-dropped-frames counter and YouTube’s stream-health messages in Live Control Room. Include audio and movement similar to the actual stream. YouTube recommends testing before going live with representative audio and video movement; see its encoder settings guidance.
- Repeat over Ethernet, if feasible. Connect the same PC to the router by cable and keep the encoder, bitrate, codec, resolution, frame rate, and other network demand as similar as practical. Compare the network-dropped-frames counter and YouTube stream health again. OBS recommends a wired connection when investigating suspected Wi-Fi instability, noting that “WiFi may be unstable for streaming” in its connection troubleshooting guide.
- Interpret the comparison cautiously. If Ethernet performs better, that is evidence that the Wi-Fi segment may contribute; it does not isolate every cause or guarantee a permanent fix. If both connections have trouble, investigate the configured bitrate against stable upload, router or modem connectivity, software interference, network drivers, or the ISP and route to YouTube.
What a good test can—and cannot—tell you
A strong Wi-Fi signal icon only describes one part of the connection: the link between the PC and access point. Stream delivery also depends on local network equipment, the ISP, and the route to YouTube’s ingest service. A peak download result or a single upload test does not establish that this full path is stable. The official guidance cited here does not set a universal Wi-Fi signal-strength threshold for streaming.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Use YouTube’s stream-health messages alongside encoder statistics. Google documents the meanings of ingestion health messages in Configuration Issues for LiveStream Resources. If OBS’s network counter remains clean while the output looks choppy, focus on rendering or encoding performance rather than Wi-Fi.
Fixes based on what the comparison shows
If Wi-Fi is worse than Ethernet
- Use Ethernet for the stream if you can.
- Reduce competing traffic during the broadcast, especially large uploads or downloads on the shared network.
- Improve the PC’s connection to the access point; a strong icon alone is not a complete measure of end-to-end stream stability.
- Recheck the stream at its planned bitrate and with realistic audio and motion after changing the setup.
If both Wi-Fi and Ethernet drop network frames
- Compare your configured total stream bitrate with stable upload capacity, leaving the 20% headroom YouTube recommends.
- Check the router or modem connection, network drivers, and software that may affect traffic, such as VPNs, security software, or network-optimization utilities. OBS lists these as areas to investigate, not guaranteed causes.
- If local equipment and configuration do not explain the issue, contact your ISP or test again later; the problem may lie beyond the Wi-Fi link.
If the network counter is clean but the stream stutters
Follow OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting. Check whether rendering lag or encoding lag is increasing; reducing output resolution or frame rate and lowering GPU load are among OBS’s remedies. A Wi-Fi speed test will not diagnose a PC that cannot render or encode its configured output in time.
