You can install OBS Studio on an Azure Linux VM, but the right installation commands depend on the VM’s Linux distribution and release. The harder part is providing OBS with a graphical desktop and a working display/graphics path: most Azure Linux VMs do not include a desktop by default. Identify the image, install OBS using its supported route, configure remote access safely, then test YouTube stream health before relying on the VM.
Before installing OBS, check the VM image and graphics requirements
Connect to the VM using SSH and identify its distribution and release before choosing package commands. On Ubuntu, for example, run:
cat /etc/os-release
OBS’s current Linux download page provides Flatpak and an Ubuntu PPA. Its current PPA instructions are for Ubuntu 24.04 and newer; do not assume they apply to other Ubuntu releases or other Azure Linux images. See the OBS download page and follow the installation route for the VM’s actual distribution.
OBS also needs a graphical session using X Window System or Wayland and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU. Basic compatibility does not guarantee that a chosen resolution, frame rate, scene, and encoder workload will perform adequately. The OBS system requirements note that CPU requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.

Install OBS using a route supported by your distribution
Ubuntu 24.04 and newer: use the OBS PPA
If the VM is running Ubuntu 24.04 or newer, the OBS download page lists these commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio
sudo apt update
sudo apt install obs-studio
Run them in an SSH session with an account authorized to use sudo. If add-apt-repository is unavailable, or the VM is not on a supported Ubuntu release, stop rather than treating the PPA commands as universal. Check the OBS download page for the package route supported by your distribution; Flatpak is another route OBS lists for Linux.

Flatpak: use only if the VM image supports it
OBS lists Flatpak as a Linux distribution channel, but the commands to install Flatpak and grant or manage application access depend on the distribution. Follow the official instructions for the VM’s image, then use the OBS listing in the Flathub catalogue if that route is appropriate. A package install alone does not provide the desktop session or graphics support OBS needs.
Provide a graphical desktop and remote access
Azure Linux VMs commonly start without a desktop environment. Microsoft documents an Ubuntu-focused path for installing a desktop and xrdp; those steps should not be copied blindly to another Linux distribution. Consult Microsoft’s Linux remote desktop guidance for the matching Ubuntu setup.

Prefer SSH administration; protect xrdp access
SSH is the common way to administer an Azure Linux VM. If you need a graphical session, Microsoft describes reaching xrdp through an SSH tunnel as an alternative to exposing RDP publicly. Direct RDP requires an inbound Network Security Group rule for TCP 3389; restrict its source to trusted addresses rather than opening it broadly. Microsoft warns that internet remote desktop can feel noticeably laggier than local use. If the VM has no public IP, Azure Bastion is another connection option described in Microsoft’s Linux VM connection guidance.
Verify the graphics path instead of assuming acceleration
A VM size that includes a GPU does not by itself establish that OBS can use it. The selected VM family, operating system, supported driver, and remote display path all matter. Microsoft advises verifying that the renderer actually uses the expected GPU for graphics-heavy applications. If GPU rendering or hardware encoding matters to your workload, confirm driver support for that VM SKU and verify the active rendering path before choosing OBS settings.

Configure OBS for YouTube’s stream requirements
In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect your account or enter a YouTube stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not show it in a recording or share it in logs, screenshots, or chat. Use the stream destination and key provided in YouTube Studio, and choose RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure transport.
Under Settings → Output, use Advanced output mode if you need to set encoder details directly. Under Settings → Video, set the output resolution and frame rate you intend to stream. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS input, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps. The bitrate examples below are YouTube’s recommended H.264 video rates, not a promise that a particular Azure VM can sustain them.

| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps |
For these H.264 examples, set rate control to CBR and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, YouTube’s recommendation; do not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube’s complete encoder-settings table gives codec-specific ranges, so consult it if you choose H.265 or AV1 rather than reusing H.264 values. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS, with 128 Kbps recommended for stereo and 44.1 kHz for stereo audio. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current requirements and full tables.
Match the bitrate to the VM’s actual outbound capacity
A recommended encoder bitrate is only useful if the VM can sustain it. Microsoft says outbound throughput is bounded by the VM’s allocated bandwidth, which varies by size. Check the selected VM’s published bandwidth allocation and test from that VM; do not infer stream capacity from the resolution setting or the presence of a GPU. Leave headroom for audio and network variation rather than treating the video bitrate as the whole connection requirement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the stream before depending on it
- Confirm the desktop and OBS launch. Sign into the graphical session and open OBS. If OBS does not launch, check the distribution-specific package installation, desktop session, and display/graphics support.
- Set the intended scene and output. Configure resolution, frame rate, encoder, CBR bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings for the actual broadcast. Avoid validating only with a static screen if the real stream contains motion or complex scenes.
- Start a private or unlisted test in YouTube Studio. Use the same stream key, output settings, audio sources, and representative motion planned for the real broadcast.
- Check YouTube stream health and OBS statistics. Look for dropped frames, unstable bitrate, encoder overload, or missing audio. If the test is unhealthy, lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again; also check VM bandwidth and graphics/encoder use.
- Monitor during the actual event. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health while live. A successful launch is not proof that the stream will remain healthy under changing network or workload conditions.
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing upload bitrate and representative audio and motion, then monitoring stream health during the event. For a stream using music, gameplay footage, or other third-party material, make sure you have the necessary rights and review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules. Avoid assuming that repeated or reused material is automatically eligible for monetization; YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies are separate from the technical ability to send a stream.
Troubleshoot common Azure OBS problems
- The Ubuntu PPA command fails: Confirm the VM is Ubuntu 24.04 or newer. The current OBS PPA instructions do not apply universally; use the installation route for the actual distribution and release.
- OBS installs but there is no window or display: A server VM often has no desktop by default. Set up a supported graphical session and connect through a protected remote desktop path; OBS requires X Window System or Wayland.
- OBS starts, but graphics performance is poor: Check the OpenGL-compatible rendering path and driver. Verify the selected GPU is actually used; a GPU VM alone does not prove that the remote session or OBS is rendering on it.
- YouTube reports a weak or unstable stream: Compare the configured bitrate with the VM’s outbound allocation and observed stream health. Reduce bitrate or output demands, then repeat a representative test.
- Frames drop or the encoder overloads: The VM’s CPU, GPU, encoder path, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity can all matter. Try a lighter scene or lower output settings, and verify whether the selected encoder uses the intended hardware.
- Remote desktop feels delayed: Microsoft warns that internet RDP can have noticeable input latency. Use an SSH tunnel to avoid exposing public TCP 3389, but note that the tunnel does not remove latency inherent in a remote connection.
- The stream has no audio: Check the active OBS audio source and meters, then verify the YouTube-compatible audio format and sample-rate settings. Test with representative audio before going live.
