Use a 24 fps output for a 24 fps pre-recorded video when your encoder supports it. YouTube does not publish a separate live-ingest bitrate row for 24 fps, so use the matching resolution and codec figures in its 30 fps table as a practical reference—not as a 24 fps prescription—and test your stream. You do not need to convert the video to 30 fps just because the live bitrate table uses that frame-rate tier.
Recommended starting settings for 24 fps live video
YouTube’s live encoder guidance permits up to 60 fps and organizes its bitrate recommendations by resolution and 30 fps or 60 fps. It does not specify a distinct bitrate for 24 fps. Keep the output at 24 fps if available, then use the matching 30 fps row below as a starting reference for resolution and codec. Actual results depend on your content and connection, so validate them in a representative test.
- Frame rate: 24 fps, matching the recording, if your encoder offers it.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframes: every 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol: RTMPS where supported, for encrypted delivery to YouTube.
- Video codec: H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1, depending on encoder and workflow support.
- Audio: AAC or MP3.
YouTube’s recommended advanced settings also include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, and Rec. 709 for SDR. Encoder labels and availability vary, so use the corresponding option where offered.
Bitrate references: use the 30 fps tier, not an invented 24 fps figure
The figures below are YouTube Help’s published live-ingest recommendations for 30 fps. They are not 24 fps measurements or guarantees. Choose the row for your output resolution and codec; do not substitute YouTube’s separate file-upload bitrate guidance for live ingest settings.

For a 24 fps stream, these are reference values only: YouTube does not state a 24 fps live bitrate row. Start with the resolution-and-codec row, then test the result rather than lowering or raising bitrate based on an assumed 24 fps conversion. YouTube’s separate upload advice says to encode a file at the frame rate at which it was recorded and lists 24 fps as common; that upload advice does not set live-ingest bitrates. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance and YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations.
Configure and test the encoder before going live
- Select the output format. In your encoder, choose the source resolution and 24 fps output if available. Select a supported codec and CBR. YouTube Live Control Room generally detects the encoder’s resolution and frame rate automatically.
- Choose a bitrate reference. Use the relevant resolution-and-codec row in the table above, remembering that its figures are for 30 fps. Prefer a sustainable rate over one your connection cannot maintain.
- Set keyframes and delivery protocol. Set a 2-second keyframe interval, never more than 4 seconds, and choose RTMPS if your encoder supports it.
- Check upload capacity. YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth headroom. The total stream bitrate must fit within your available upload capacity; leave room rather than planning to use all of it.
- Run a representative test. Include audio and video movement similar to the intended stream. Check the Live Control Room preview, stream health, and any messages before relying on the setup. YouTube’s general tips recommend setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event.

Do you need to convert 24 fps to 30 fps?
No. The use of a 30 fps bitrate row as a reference does not mean the video must be converted to 30 fps. Retaining 24 fps avoids changing the source cadence solely to match a table that does not provide a 24 fps tier. Configure the encoder for 24 fps when available, then test how the selected resolution and bitrate perform. YouTube’s statement that 24 fps is common applies to uploaded content; it is not a special live-bitrate recommendation.
Software or hardware encoder?
YouTube supports encoders as software apps or standalone hardware. A hardware encoder is optional for sending a pre-recorded video live; 24 fps alone does not require dedicated hardware. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware for higher-production events, while noting that what a creator already has may be enough to get started. YouTube’s verified encoder list identifies third-party products, not products made by YouTube. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Troubleshooting common 24 fps live-stream problems
- The preview or stream stutters: Check stream health and whether the upload connection can sustain the configured total bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Test at a lower sustainable bitrate or resolution if necessary.
- The encoder reports a different frame rate or resolution: Confirm its output settings and inspect what Live Control Room detects. YouTube generally detects the encoder output automatically; do not assume the source file’s properties alone determine the live output.
- Quality looks poor despite using a recommended value: The published bitrate table is a 30 fps reference, not a 24 fps guarantee. Test with representative movement and audio, and check codec, resolution, bitrate stability, and stream-health messages.
- The stream fails to connect or drops: Confirm the encoder is using the intended stream configuration and RTMPS where supported; inspect Live Control Room messages and test again before the scheduled stream.
Copyright and reused-content considerations
Encoder settings affect delivery quality, not permission to broadcast. Before streaming a recording, confirm you have the rights to its video, music, and other included material and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization rules. A technically healthy stream does not establish that content is authorized or eligible for monetization.
