Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If your prerecorded YouTube Live stream has video but no sound, trace the audio from the file through OBS and its output to YouTube’s Live Control Room. Start by playing the file locally, then check the OBS mixer meter, mute and output routing, a short local recording, and YouTube’s ingest status. If OBS shows no audio, the problem is upstream of its output; if the recording has sound but the live preview does not, focus on the stream output and YouTube ingest.
Find where the audio disappears
Work through the signal path in order. The first point where what you hear or see changes is the best place to investigate; a moving meter alone does not prove the live stream contains audio.
- Media file: Play the exact prerecorded video outside OBS and confirm its intended audio track is audible.
- OBS input: Play the media in the scene you use for streaming and watch the corresponding mixer meter.
- OBS output: Check mute and output routing, then make a short local recording and listen to it.
- YouTube ingest: Read the Live Control Room error and preview, and compare them with OBS and the local recording.
Check the prerecorded file
Play the same file you plan to stream in a local media player. If it is silent there, OBS cannot restore the intended program audio; verify that you have the correct file and track. A file can contain multiple audio tracks or an unusual stream layout, so identify which track holds the audio you want before changing encoder settings.
If the file plays with sound locally, leave it playing while you test the OBS scene. This confirms the source material has audible audio, but it does not yet confirm OBS is capturing or sending it.

Check whether OBS receives audio
Watch the source meter during playback
In OBS, open the scene and start the prerecorded media. Watch the mixer meter for the source expected to carry its sound. OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide explains that the mixer displays source levels and that its mute control affects output. OBS’s Audio Mixer Technical Details says a missing input indicator means audio is not reaching OBS; playback may not have started, or a device may be disconnected.
If the meter does not move
- Confirm the media has started playing in the same scene and source used for streaming.
- Make sure the expected source is active. For device-based capture, confirm that the device is connected and selected.
- Recheck the file in a local player. If it is silent there too, investigate the file or the selected track rather than OBS output settings.
If the meter moves
Audio is reaching that point in OBS, but it may still be muted or excluded from the output. Check the source’s mute and output state, then continue to a local recording and YouTube’s ingest status rather than treating meter activity as proof that viewers can hear it.

Check OBS output and make a local test recording
Make sure the relevant source is not muted to output. OBS Audio Monitoring can help you listen to the source as it enters OBS, but hearing monitored audio does not establish that the encoded stream or YouTube ingest contains it. OBS recommends recording a normal session and listening back before going live in its Audio Mixer Guide.
- Use the same OBS scene and output configuration intended for the live stream.
- Record a short test while the prerecorded media plays.
- Play the recording back and check whether the audio is present.
If the local recording is silent, focus on OBS capture, mute state, and routing. If the recording has sound but YouTube does not, compare the live output settings with the Live Control Room’s ingest status. This comparison helps narrow the fault; it does not prove one particular cause.

Read YouTube’s Live Control Room errors
YouTube’s live-stream error guidance distinguishes an ingest stream with no audio from one with multiple audio streams, and advises providing one audio stream. It also identifies unsupported codecs and incorrect audio settings as possible issues. Follow the error shown for your stream; adding tracks speculatively is not a fix.
The same guidance lists AAC and MP3 as supported audio codecs. YouTube’s encoder settings recommend the following audio values. They are recommendations, not universal requirements, and changing them cannot repair audio that never reaches OBS.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the encoder output and stream health
YouTube recommends inspecting the output directly in the encoder. If audio or video already sounds or looks wrong there, check the sources routed to the encoder; encoder errors, CPU load, and problems with the local archive are also relevant checks. If encoder output appears healthy but the YouTube stream does not, YouTube identifies the outbound internet connection as a possible issue. See its live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

Before and during the event, use YouTube’s live-streaming tips: preview before going live, verify the local archive and that its file size is growing, confirm the event is accessible, and monitor audio and video quality continuously.
FFmpeg: why there is no safe universal mapping command
The right FFmpeg audio mapping depends on the input’s streams, language, channel layout, codec, and installed FFmpeg version. Without those details, a fixed map index or copy-and-paste command could select the wrong track—or no audio at all. The documentation established for this article does not verify a universal FFmpeg command for arbitrary prerecorded inputs, so it would be misleading to prescribe one.
Before changing an FFmpeg command, inspect the actual input’s streams and consult documentation matching your installed version. Confirm which stream contains the intended program audio, then verify the resulting output locally and in YouTube’s ingest preview. Do not treat YouTube’s general codec and bitrate recommendations as a substitute for identifying the input stream.
Preflight checklist before going live
- Play the exact prerecorded file and confirm its intended audio is audible.
- Play it in the streaming OBS scene and check the relevant mixer meter.
- Check mute and output routing; do not rely on monitoring alone.
- Record a short local test with the intended output configuration and listen to it.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room preview, stream health, and any audio error messages.
- Start the event only after the checks pass, then keep monitoring audio and video.
Common symptoms and fixes
| What you observe | Where to investigate | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The file is silent in a local player. | The file or selected audio track. | Confirm you have the correct file and identify the track containing the intended audio. |
| The file plays with sound, but the OBS meter does not move. | OBS source capture or a device input. | Start playback in the streaming scene, confirm the expected source is active, and check that any capture device is connected and selected. |
| The OBS meter moves, but a local recording is silent. | OBS output, mute, or routing. | Check the source’s mute and output state, then record and listen again. |
| The local recording has sound, but YouTube’s preview does not. | Live output or YouTube ingest. | Compare OBS’s live output with the Live Control Room error and preview. |
| YouTube reports no audio stream or multiple audio streams. | Audio tracks reaching YouTube ingest. | Follow the displayed error and provide one audio stream; do not add tracks as a guess. |
| Encoder output is healthy, but the YouTube stream is not. | Outbound connection or ingest. | Check YouTube’s stream-health information and connection guidance. |
