YouTube Live Redirect Between Channels: Permissions and Limitations

YouTube Live Redirect can send viewers to another channel’s livestream or Premiere, but the sender must qualify and the destination must allow it.

You can redirect viewers from your YouTube livestream or Premiere to another channel’s eligible livestream or Premiere, but only if you meet YouTube’s requirements for sending a redirect and the destination channel allows it. A destination channel does not need more than 1,000 subscribers just to receive a redirect; the threshold applies to the sender.

How Live Redirect works between channels

Live Redirect is a YouTube Studio feature for handing viewers from an ending livestream or Premiere to a selected livestream or Premiere. For a cross-channel handoff, two separate conditions apply: the sending channel must be eligible, and the destination channel must permit that sender.

It is a viewing handoff, not a transfer of channel ownership, stream controls, or creator permissions. YouTube’s guidance does not promise that a redirect will increase discovery, retain viewers, or deliver a particular audience size.

Who can send a redirect—and who can receive one?

Sender eligibility

YouTube’s current Help guidance lists two requirements for creators sending redirects: more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. “More than 1,000” means the channel must exceed 1,000, not merely have exactly 1,000. Check YouTube’s Live Redirect instructions and live stream settings guidance for current policy.

Receiving a redirect

The recipient’s subscriber count is not the sender threshold. TeamYouTube stated on May 3, 2022, that “Channels of any size will be able to receive Live redirects.” The destination still needs to allow the sending channel, and an eligible destination livestream or Premiere must be available when you configure the redirect.

How the destination channel controls permission

The destination channel chooses who can redirect viewers to its content in YouTube Studio under Settings > Community. YouTube lists three access approaches:

Setting Who can send viewers? Important detail
Channels I subscribe to can redirect to my content Channels the destination subscribes to The destination’s subscriptions must be public for this permission to work.
All channels can redirect to my content Any creator This cannot be used at the same time as the subscription-based setting or the manual approval list.
Specific channels who can redirect to my content Channels manually approved by the destination The list supports up to 100 channels and can be combined with the subscription-based permission.

Allowing all channels is the broadest option. Subscription-based access and a manual list limit permission to channels the destination chooses or already subscribes to. Studio labels can change, so confirm the live settings in YouTube Studio if the wording differs.

How to redirect viewers to another channel’s livestream or Premiere

  1. Confirm eligibility and permission. Make sure the sending channel meets YouTube’s current sender requirements. Ask the destination channel to allow your channel using its redirect settings.
  2. Make sure the destination is available. The target must be an eligible livestream or Premiere. If it does not appear as an option, check both its availability and the destination channel’s permission settings.
  3. Open the source event in Studio. In YouTube Studio, go to Content, select the Live tab, and edit the livestream or Premiere that will send viewers.
  4. Choose the destination. Open Customization, find Redirect, select Add, and choose the eligible destination livestream or Premiere.
  5. Prepare viewers for the handoff. YouTube recommends setting up a Premiere before the source livestream and telling viewers to wait a few seconds for the screen to reload after the source ends.

What viewers experience when the source ends

When the source livestream or Premiere ends, YouTube’s autoplay can move viewers to the selected destination. Viewers who have autoplay turned off need to click Play themselves. The redirect does not force playback for those viewers, so explain the handoff before ending the source.

Why the destination may not appear

  • The recipient has not permitted your channel. Ask the destination owner to check the subscription, all-channels, or manual approval setting.
  • The selected destination is not eligible or available. Confirm that the target is an eligible livestream or Premiere and is available to select.
  • The sender does not meet YouTube’s eligibility requirements. Check that the sending channel has more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes, as specified in current Help guidance.

Restrictions you cannot work around with a redirect

A redirect is not a way to bypass a livestream restriction. YouTube says a channel with an active live-streaming restriction may not stream through another channel while that restriction remains active. Review YouTube’s live streaming restrictions and settings before arranging a handoff.

Keep a YouTube channel live around the clock

Live Redirect handles a handoff between eligible events; it does not keep an uploaded video running as a continuous livestream. If your separate goal is to run a 24/7 YouTube stream from uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer does not have to stay on at home. It streams your uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.

Monthly: $9.99 per month.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a channel with exactly 1,000 subscribers send a Live Redirect?

No. YouTube’s current Help wording is “more than 1,000 subscribers,” so exactly 1,000 does not meet that stated threshold.
