YouTube’s current instructions put Live Redirect setup in YouTube Studio, while the public Live Streaming API documents broadcast and stream management, not choosing a redirect destination. In particular, liveBroadcasts.transition changes a broadcast’s lifecycle state; it does not redirect viewers.
What YouTube Live Redirect does
Live Redirect hands viewers off after a source live stream or Premiere ends. The destination can be a Premiere or another channel’s live stream, and YouTube says autoplay moves viewers to the selected destination once the source ends. YouTube’s Live Redirect instructions describe configuring the destination in Studio.
How to set up a redirect in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, open Content > Live and edit the source video.
- Open Customization, find Redirect, and add the destination Premiere or live stream.
- If the destination is another channel’s live stream, make sure that channel allows your channel to redirect viewers to its content.
- When the source stream ends, YouTube displays a confirmation indicating that viewers will be redirected.
The sender’s eligibility and the receiving channel’s permission are separate requirements. YouTube’s Help page currently says a sender needs more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes. For a redirect to another channel’s live stream, that destination channel must grant permission in Studio. These requirements and settings can change; check YouTube’s current Live Redirect Help page before relying on them.
What the YouTube Live Streaming API can—and cannot—do
The API manages broadcast and stream resources. A broadcast is the event viewers watch; a stream represents the audio and video feed. Documented API operations include creating and updating broadcasts, binding a broadcast to a stream, listing or deleting resources, and changing a broadcast’s status.

The official liveBroadcasts method reference lists methods such as bind, insert, list, transition, and update, but does not document a method for setting a Live Redirect destination. Based on the public documentation reviewed on October 3, 2026, there is no documented API operation for configuring the redirect itself. This describes the documented public API, not what Google might add in the future.
Why liveBroadcasts.transition is not a redirect
Google describes liveBroadcasts.transition as changing a YouTube live broadcast’s status and initiating processes associated with the new status. Its documented target states include testing, live, and complete. These are lifecycle states, not viewer destinations. A successful transition to live starts or changes the broadcast’s lifecycle state; it does not choose what viewers see after the event. Likewise, enableAutoStart concerns broadcast starting behavior, not post-event redirection. Neither is a substitute for the Studio redirect setting.
What you can automate instead
You can use documented API operations for other parts of a broadcast workflow, such as managing scheduled broadcasts, binding a broadcast to a stream, monitoring status, or transitioning an event between lifecycle states. Keep those tasks separate from redirect configuration:

- Broadcast operations: use documented Live Streaming API methods for the event and stream lifecycle.
- Eligibility and receiving permission: verify the sender’s current eligibility and, for another channel’s live stream, that channel’s Studio permission.
Do not treat a successful API lifecycle operation as proof that a redirect has been configured. The reviewed public API documentation does not establish a redirect-destination parameter, an API-based approval workflow for receiving channels, or an exception that enables redirect automation.
Practical workflow and troubleshooting
Before the source event ends
- Set the destination in the source video’s Studio customization settings.
- Check that the sender meets YouTube’s current eligibility requirements.
- For another channel’s live stream, confirm that the destination channel has allowed the redirect in Studio.
- Use the API only for the broadcast-management tasks its documented methods support.
If viewers are not redirected
- No destination is configured: edit the source in YouTube Studio and add one under Customization > Redirect.
- The destination is another channel’s live stream: ask that channel to review its redirect permissions in Studio.
- The sender may not be eligible: check the current requirements on YouTube’s Help page; YouTube currently lists more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes.
- An API call only changed broadcast status: that operation does not configure a destination. Set the redirect in Studio.
