Live Redirect automatically hands viewers from an ending YouTube live stream or Premiere to a selected Premiere or permitted live stream. An end screen is a clickable panel on a video’s closing seconds, where viewers can choose a video, playlist, subscription, channel, or—if eligible—an external website. Use Redirect for a live-event handoff; use an end screen to offer viewers choices.
How Live Redirect and end screens differ
| Feature | Live Redirect | End screen |
|---|---|---|
| When it appears | After a live stream or Premiere ends; autoplay moves viewers to the selected destination. | During the final 5–20 seconds of an eligible video. |
| What viewers do | They are automatically handed off to a selected Premiere or live stream. | They can select an element or hide the end screen. |
| Destinations | A Premiere or another channel’s live stream, subject to that channel’s permission. | A video or playlist, subscription, another channel, or an external website for channels in the YouTube Partner Program. |
| Key requirements | The sending creator must have more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. The recipient must allow the redirect if it is their live stream. | The video must be at least 25 seconds long. A standard 16:9 video can have up to four elements; other aspect ratios may allow fewer. |
| Measurement | The official guidance cited here does not establish a comparative performance statistic. | Creators can inspect end-screen element click rate in YouTube Studio Analytics. |
These are different tools, not two versions of the same feature: Redirect is an event-end handoff, while an end screen is an interactive closing panel. YouTube does not claim that one generally performs better than the other. YouTube Live Redirect guidance · YouTube end-screen elements and Analytics guidance
How to redirect viewers after a YouTube live stream
- Check sender eligibility. YouTube requires more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes for creators sending a redirect.
- Set up the destination first. If you want viewers to land on a Premiere, schedule it before the live stream. YouTube advises telling viewers to wait a few seconds after the source stream ends for their screens to reload; this is practical guidance, not a guarantee of exact playback timing.
- Open the source in Studio. Go to YouTube Studio → Content → Live, select the source video, and open Customization.
- Choose a destination. Under Redirect, select Add, then choose a Premiere or search for another channel’s live stream.
- Confirm permission when redirecting to another channel. The destination channel controls who may redirect viewers to its live streams. Its options include allowing channels it subscribes to, allowing all channels, or allowing selected channels. YouTube places these controls under YouTube Studio → Settings → Community. The all-channels option cannot be combined with the subscribed-channels setting or a manual redirect list.
YouTube describes a similar setup flow when redirecting viewers from a Premiere. See YouTube’s Live Redirect instructions.
How to add an end screen to a video
- In YouTube Studio, open Content and select the video.
- Choose Editor, then End screen.
- Add the elements you want, such as a video, playlist, subscription, or channel. An external website element is available only to channels in the YouTube Partner Program.
- Place the elements within the video’s final 5–20 seconds, then save. The video must be at least 25 seconds long.
On a standard 16:9 video, YouTube permits up to four elements; other aspect ratios may have a lower limit. Choose elements relevant to the video and check their click rate in Studio Analytics. See YouTube’s end-screen setup guidance and element and Analytics guidance.

Can an end screen send viewers to a live stream?
An end screen does not automatically move viewers into a live event. It offers selectable elements such as videos, playlists, subscriptions, channels, and—when the channel qualifies—external websites. Live Redirect is the feature designed to hand off viewers automatically to a selected Premiere or permitted live stream when the source event ends.
Why can’t I use Live Redirect on a vertical stream?
YouTube’s live-feature comparison lists Live Redirect and Premieres as supported for horizontal live streams, but not for the vertical live feed. If a redirect is central to your event plan, check the intended format against YouTube’s live-stream feature guidance before scheduling.

End-screen availability and viewer experience
End screens are not available in every playback context. YouTube lists Made for Kids videos, mobile web other than iPad mobile web, YouTube Music and YouTube Kids apps, Flash videos, and 360 videos as exclusions. Viewers can hide an end screen, and YouTube says it may not always appear or may look different depending on performance, viewer behavior, device, and context. These limits mean an end screen is an option for eligible playback—not a guaranteed prompt every viewer will see. Details are in YouTube’s end-screen guidance.
Which feature should a gaming creator use?
- Use Live Redirect when a gaming stream is ending and you want to carry viewers into a scheduled Premiere or another creator’s live event. Confirm eligibility, destination permission, and horizontal-stream support first.
- Use an end screen when a recorded gameplay video is closing and you want viewers to choose a related video or playlist, subscribe, or visit another channel.
- Use both in the workflow, where appropriate. A live event can hand off with Redirect; separately, eligible recorded videos can use end screens to present follow-up choices. They act at different moments and require separate setup.
