Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If YouTube Live or your encoder rejects a stream key, first recopy the key and stream URL for the exact scheduled event in YouTube Studio, then check that the encoder is using the matching protocol. A key error is not enough to identify the cause: a stale key, wrong RTMPS URL, account restriction, or media-format problem can look similar. Follow the checks below in order, using the exact error and YouTube’s stream-health message to narrow it down.
Set up the scheduled stream with the matching key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live → Stream, then open the scheduled stream you intend to use. YouTube’s encoder instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy that stream’s current key into the encoder’s Stream Key field. Copy the stream URL from the same event’s settings into the encoder’s server or URL field. YouTube describes keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” in Manage live stream settings. Keep the key private.
- Start the encoder and wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, click Go live there after the preview is ready; sending the encoder feed and starting the scheduled event are separate actions.
YouTube allows a custom stream key to be reused, but if someone reset the key, the encoder must be updated with the new value. Only a channel owner or manager can reset it. If you cannot see or change the key, check your channel role with the owner or manager.
Diagnose the rejection by symptom
The encoder fails before YouTube shows a preview
Recopy the key from the intended event and replace the value saved in the encoder; also verify that its stream URL is for that same event. Avoid relying on a key copied from an older setup, a different scheduled stream, or an encoder profile that may have saved an earlier value. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide recommends updating the encoder with the key from Live Control Room when you see an error starting the encoder.
If the encoder signs in to YouTube without asking for a stream key, it may use a software-provider integration rather than manual key entry. In that case, follow the encoder provider’s support guidance; a copied key may not be the credential that integration uses.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The error mentions SSL, RTMPS, or a timeout
Check whether the encoder is configured for RTMP or RTMPS and whether the URL matches that protocol. For RTMPS, retrieve the encrypted server URL from the lock icon beside Stream URL in Live Control Room; the interface may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default. YouTube’s RTMPS setup instructions explain the encrypted connection. For an SSL-related error, confirm both the selected protocol and server use RTMPS; YouTube says port 443 may be needed. For a timeout, check the encoder’s documentation to confirm RTMPS support.
YouTube receives the feed but reports a stream-health or format error
Once a feed reaches YouTube, a format warning is different from a rejected credential. For YouTube’s “Incorrect stream format” message, use H.264 video and AAC audio. General encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. See YouTube live-stream error messages for the specific warning and its remedy.

Do not change bitrate blindly. YouTube’s suggested bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec, while a workable setting also depends on your upload capacity. Match the encoder’s output to your intended resolution and frame rate, consult YouTube’s current encoder guidance, and use Live Control Room’s stream-health feedback rather than treating every ingestion warning as a bad key.
You cannot start the event from the channel
YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. If the account cannot go live at all, confirm eligibility before continuing to troubleshoot encoder credentials. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend setting up ahead of time, checking the preview, and monitoring audio, video, and stream health before starting the event.

Prerecorded video and encoder-specific cases
“Prerecorded stream key” can mean a prerecorded video being played through an encoder, or a feature in a particular encoder that schedules prerecorded media. The general YouTube encoder setup covers scheduled streams and key entry, but it cannot establish why an unnamed encoder rejects a key or whether that product supports a particular prerecorded workflow. YouTube’s encoder documentation also describes AJA PlayToStream functionality for scheduled prerecorded media; that does not establish compatibility for other software or hardware.
If these steps do not identify the problem, note the encoder or software name and version, the complete error text, whether YouTube receives a preview, whether the event is scheduled, and whether the encoder uses manual key entry or a sign-in integration. Those details distinguish a credential problem from a transport, format, eligibility, or product-specific issue.
