If viewers are rewinding your podcast while it is live, turn off Enable DVR in YouTube Studio’s stream settings, if your streaming method supports it. That stops viewers from seeking backward during the broadcast; it does not stop YouTube from making a recording available afterward. If the broadcast itself is restarting, DVR is not the fix—the two problems are different.
First, identify what is restarting
“Replay” can mean either live rewind or the archived video available after a broadcast. YouTube treats these separately: DVR controls pausing and rewinding while the stream is live, while an archive is a post-stream video on your channel. See YouTube’s DVR guidance and information about live-stream replays.
- Viewers are rewinding during the live podcast: Disable DVR, if available for your stream type.
- A replay appears on your channel after the podcast ends: Change the archive’s visibility or delete it; turning DVR off does not remove it.
- The encoder or live broadcast itself keeps restarting: DVR settings do not address that. The YouTube documentation cited here covers DVR and archiving, not diagnosis of encoder restarts.
Turn off DVR for a supported encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go live.
- Select the Stream or Manage tab, then open Stream settings.
- Under Additional settings, switch Enable DVR off.
- If the stream is already live, you can change the setting then. YouTube says the change applies to viewers who start playing the stream after the change; it may not affect people already watching.
YouTube’s live stream settings help describes settings for encoder or mobile streams, while its DVR help says disabling DVR is not supported for webcam and mobile streaming. Do not assume the toggle will be available or effective for those methods.
Choose whether viewers should get a replay afterward
If your goal is to prevent a post-show replay, manage the archive rather than DVR. YouTube Studio’s Content page lets you change the archive’s privacy or delete it. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. It recommends making a local recording if you need a backup. - Keep the replay public: Leave the archive available with the visibility you want.
- Limit access: Change the archive’s privacy from the Content page in YouTube Studio.
- Remove it: Delete the archived video from Studio.
- Need a reliable copy: Record locally, especially for a stream that could exceed 12 hours.
Do not use latency as a rewind control
Latency is a separate stream setting, not the documented way to stop viewers seeking backward. Lower latency can make playback buffering more likely; changing it does not replace the DVR toggle. YouTube explains this trade-off in its live-stream latency guidance.
Troubleshoot the likely issue
Viewers can still rewind
- Confirm that Enable DVR is off in the active stream’s settings.
- Check the streaming method. YouTube does not support disabling DVR for webcam and mobile streaming.
- If you changed the setting mid-stream, ask a viewer to start playback again; the change applies to viewers who start after it was made.
A replay still appears after the show
That is expected: DVR only controls seeking during the live broadcast. Change the archive’s privacy or delete it in YouTube Studio if you do not want viewers to access it.

The broadcast or encoder restarts
Do not treat disabling DVR as a solution. It changes viewer seeking, not the operation of the encoder or broadcast. The YouTube help sources cited here do not establish a cause or a repair for encoder restarts.
A long podcast has no archive
YouTube says streams over 12 hours may not be captured. For a show that could run that long, make a local recording rather than relying on an automatic archive.
