A stable bitrate reading in OBS does not prove that YouTube is receiving the bitrate its selected ingest settings expect—or that your connection is delivering it consistently. First identify YouTube’s exact stream-health message, then match the incoming resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate to your Live Control Room settings. If those match, check OBS’s network-dropped-frames counter during a test.
Why YouTube can warn about bitrate when OBS looks stable
OBS’s bitrate display is only one piece of evidence. A rate that looks steady at a glance does not confirm that YouTube is receiving the correct rate for the selected ingest resolution, or that packets are reaching YouTube reliably over time. YouTube’s warning may also concern a codec, keyframe interval or frame rate rather than insufficient bandwidth. The exact Live Control Room message determines which branch to investigate.
Live bitrate recommendations depend on the codec, resolution and frame rate. Do not apply a single target to every stream, and do not use YouTube’s prerecorded-upload encoding recommendations for a live encoder. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table.
Diagnose the warning in order
-
Read the exact YouTube message
In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s health information and note the full warning. Distinguish an incorrect bitrate from a codec, keyframe or frame-rate warning. YouTube lists these as separate live-stream error types, so lowering bitrate before checking the message can send you down the wrong path. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages.

-
Match the selected ingest settings to OBS output
Compare the resolution selected in YouTube’s Ingestion Settings with OBS’s actual output resolution and frame rate. Also confirm the encoder codec and video bitrate. For a non-variable-resolution entrypoint, YouTube says to use the bitrate for the resolution selected in Ingestion Settings. If your connection cannot support that resolution, YouTube advises choosing a lower one.
-
Check live encoder requirements
YouTube’s listed RTMP/RTMPS live settings support H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, with a frame rate up to 60 fps. YouTube specifies CBR, recommends a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Verify the setting relevant to your warning; an incorrect codec or keyframe interval is not fixed by changing bitrate alone. Audio codec requirements may also matter if the specific warning identifies audio or stream format.

Watch OBS network statistics during a test
Run a test stream with representative audio and motion, then monitor OBS’s network-dropped-frames counter and connection indicator over time. Check the OBS log after the test. OBS explains that network-dropped frames indicate the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate. That is different from a merely stable-looking bitrate number at one moment. See OBS Project’s stream connection troubleshooting guide.
-
If network drops rise, isolate the connection
Change one factor at a time and repeat the test so you can tell what helped. OBS suggests trying a different ingest server, lowering the bitrate to a level your stable upload connection can sustain, and checking VPNs, security software and network-prioritization or optimization utilities. Check for outdated network drivers as well. If you are using Wi-Fi, try a wired connection to test whether wireless instability is involved. YouTube also recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event.

If the problem is stream-start or key related
If YouTube reports a stream-key or third-party encoder start error rather than a bitrate mismatch, refresh the stream key in Live Control Room and update it in the encoder. For a software sign-in route that does not use a key, consult that software’s support. Follow YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
YouTube Live bitrate recommendations for common settings
The following are YouTube Help’s recommended bitrate settings, not universal minimums or proof that a particular connection can sustain them. The figures below are for the listed resolution and frame rate; the source page does not state a publication year. Use the row matching your codec, resolution and frame rate, then compare it with your selected ingest settings and the capacity your upload connection can sustain consistently. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion, checking upload speed, and monitoring stream health rather than relying on a single speed-test result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common causes and what to change
- Wrong bitrate for the selected resolution: Confirm the resolution selected in YouTube Ingestion Settings, then set OBS to the corresponding live bitrate guidance. If your connection cannot sustain it, lower the chosen resolution.
- Codec or keyframe mismatch: Verify the codec is supported for the workflow and that CBR and the keyframe interval match YouTube’s live guidance. Do not treat every stream-health warning as a bandwidth problem.
- Network-dropped frames: Test another ingest server, reduce the video bitrate to fit reliable upload capacity, inspect VPN/security/network-optimization software, and compare wired networking with Wi-Fi where applicable.
- Stream key or start error: Refresh the key in Live Control Room and replace the one configured in OBS; use YouTube’s guidance for the exact start error.
- No obvious OBS network drops, but YouTube still warns: Recheck the precise YouTube message and the selected ingest configuration. A stable displayed rate alone does not identify the cause.
