First identify where the problem is: OBS dropped frames point to the connection between OBS and YouTube; rendering or encoding lag points to your computer; and buffering reported by viewers can happen even when your outgoing stream is healthy. Check OBS’s counters and YouTube’s stream health before changing settings.
Identify which kind of freezing you have
These symptoms can look alike to viewers, but they require different fixes. OBS separates connection trouble from local rendering or encoding overload, and viewer buffering is a third situation.

OBS defines dropped frames as a connection that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. They are not the same as rendering lag or encoding overload. See the OBS connection troubleshooting guide, OBS performance guide, and OBS buffering guide.
Work through the diagnosis in order

Check whether OBS is dropping frames
While the stream is freezing, check OBS’s dropped-frame counter or connection status. If the counter is rising, treat this as a connection-to-ingest problem first. Verify that the configured bitrate is sustainable on your stable upload connection. OBS suggests using about 75% of total upload speed as a starting bitrate heuristic; it is not a guarantee of sustained throughput. Run a speed test, then consider a lower bitrate if available upload is insufficient or inconsistent.

If your OBS version and setup let you choose an ingest server, try a different available server. Also check whether a VPN, security software, or network-optimization software may be interfering. OBS’s connection guide covers these connection checks.

Check for rendering or encoding lag
If dropped frames are not rising but OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload, focus on the local workload. OBS uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes, so a healthy internet connection will not fix a computer that cannot keep up. Free GPU capacity, limit a game’s frame rate, simplify busy scenes, or reduce the stream’s output resolution or frame rate if necessary.

Review YouTube’s stream health and encoder settings
Check YouTube’s stream health and compare your encoder bitrate with YouTube’s recommendations for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you selected. For H.264, YouTube Help lists 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps and 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are recommended ingestion bitrates for those formats—not measurements of your home’s upload capacity or proof that a particular stream is stable.

YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health. A static scene can conceal problems that become visible in a fast-moving game. Use YouTube’s encoder guidance for the recommendations that match your format.

Test playback if OBS and YouTube look healthy
If OBS shows no accumulating dropped frames or overload and YouTube reports healthy stream health, ask a viewer to test on another device or network. If only some viewers see freezing, their playback connection or device may be the issue rather than your outgoing stream. OBS addresses this separately in its stream-buffering guide.

When Wi-Fi may be the weak link
If you are streaming over Wi-Fi and OBS is dropping frames, test with a wired Ethernet connection. OBS recommends wired connectivity because Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. Treat Ethernet as a diagnostic and possible fix for wireless instability, not as a cure for local rendering overload, congestion elsewhere on your ISP’s route, or buffering on a viewer’s network.
If the connection issue persists, OBS also suggests checking cables and network hardware, restarting the modem or router, and contacting your ISP. Its connection troubleshooting guide has further steps.

Why “excellent connection” may not settle the diagnosis
A connection status is only one piece of evidence. It does not establish that OBS can render and encode each frame on time, nor that every viewer can play the stream smoothly. Use the symptom that is actually changing—dropped frames, performance indicators, YouTube stream health, or reports from particular viewers—to choose the next step. Do not treat the 75% upload heuristic and YouTube’s format-specific bitrate recommendations as interchangeable: one is an OBS starting point tied to upload speed, while the others are YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates.
