For a 24/7 YouTube nature ambience stream at 1440p, use a constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and a bitrate matched to your codec and frame rate: 15 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at 30 fps, 21 Mbps for H.264 at 30 fps, 24 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at 60 fps, or 34 Mbps for H.264 at 60 fps. Treat those as YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates, not a guarantee your encoder or internet connection can sustain them. The bigger operational catch: a YouTube live stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived, so plan separately if you need a complete replay.
Recommended 1440p bitrate and encoder settings
Choose the frame rate to match the footage first, then select a compatible codec and its corresponding bitrate. YouTube’s live-stream recommendations differ from its upload recommendations. Its current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these targets for 1440p: YouTube live encoder settings.
| Output | Codec | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1440p, 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 15 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | H.264 | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 24 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | H.264 | 34 Mbps |
These figures apply to YouTube’s live ingest recommendations. They are not upload settings, guaranteed quality outcomes, or proof that a particular connection will remain stable at that rate. Allow headroom above the video bitrate for audio and network variation, and test from the actual streaming location before relying on a 24/7 run.
30 fps or 60 fps?
For static or gently moving scenes, 1440p30 is a sensible starting configuration when the source is 30 fps. It uses a lower recommended target bitrate than 1440p60 for the same codec, which can make a stable setup easier to achieve. Choose 60 fps when the source is genuinely 60 fps, the motion benefits from it, and your encoder and connection can sustain the higher target. This is a practical choice based on YouTube’s frame-rate recommendations, not a platform rule for nature footage.

Other settings to check
- Ingest protocol: YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS; it recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream transport.
- Bitrate mode: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube specifies.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four.
- Video format: For SDR, use progressive scan, square pixels, Rec. 709 color, and 8-bit depth, as in YouTube’s advanced recommendations.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Its recommended audio settings include 44.1 kHz stereo sampling and 128 kbps stereo audio.
- Frame-rate limit: YouTube lists up to 60 fps.
Use only codec, resolution, and audio options supported by both your encoder and chosen workflow. Keep output consistent with the source where possible instead of inventing extra frame rate or detail through conversion.
Set up the YouTube Live stream and test it
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. If you have never enabled live streaming on the channel, YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the encoder’s streaming settings. A stream key is a password-like credential that tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Keep it private; reset it if you believe it has been exposed.
- Configure resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR, keyframe interval, and audio using the settings above. Confirm the encoder is sending the intended format rather than assuming a preset has chosen it correctly.
- Start a representative test with the actual footage and audio. Check the Live Control Room preview, stream-health status, and any warnings before launch. YouTube recommends testing audio and video quality and checking access from channel or watch pages and mobile devices.
- For a scheduled event, wait for the preview and start the event from Live Control Room. During operation, monitor stream health and have a recovery procedure and local recording plan.
YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. A computer or encoder can fail even when the stream appears healthy, and a local recording is a separate safeguard from YouTube’s replay archive.

Choose latency and DVR for an ambience audience
Normal latency is a practical starting point when viewers are listening or watching passively rather than interacting with you in real time. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering and is less important when the creator is not interacting with the audience.
DVR controls whether viewers can pause, rewind, and resume the live stream. Enable it if that playback behavior is useful; disable it if you prefer viewers to receive only the current live point. Consider the audience experience as well as the technical setup when choosing.

Can a YouTube live stream run continuously for 24 hours?
A continuous stream is possible as an operating setup, but do not rely on YouTube to create a complete replay of one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast. YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream that is less than 12 hours, including streams at 1440p and 2160p, and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It does not guarantee that every stream under 12 hours will be archived. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.
If a complete replay matters, record locally and consider ending and restarting as shorter sessions. Shorter sessions may improve the chance of an archived replay, but YouTube does not promise a seamless handoff between sessions; plan for an interruption and communicate it if continuity matters to viewers.

Clear rights and understand monetization limits
Footage and audio rights
Confirm that you have the rights needed for every video and audio element, including background music. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the provider to represent and warrant that it has the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of the live content, including music rights involving artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. A license for an ordinary uploaded video should not be assumed to cover every live-stream use or territory. Use original recordings or licenses that explicitly permit the intended live use. Read YouTube’s Terms of Service.
Originality and revenue are not automatic
YouTube’s monetization policy says repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible under its inauthentic-content policy, and monetized content should provide creative, educational, or other value. A nature ambience stream is not automatically eligible or disqualified based on its title or genre: YouTube makes channel-specific decisions. Distinct original scenes, meaningful variation, and properly cleared rights are sensible editorial safeguards. See YouTube channel monetization policies.

Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve, and eligibility and settings vary by feature and channel. Continuous streaming does not establish a particular revenue result.
Choose a software or hardware encoder
YouTube supports encoder-based streams using software or standalone hardware. Its encoder setup page lists verified third-party encoders and notes that these products are not made by YouTube. A dedicated hardware encoder is optional, not a requirement; software encoding may be sufficient for a creator’s setup.
Before choosing an encoder, check that its documentation confirms support for your required 1440p frame rate, codec, target bitrate, and RTMP or RTMPS. Also consider whether it can monitor stream health, record locally, and recover in the way your operation needs. YouTube’s official settings do not benchmark specific encoders or guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation. External cameras, microphones, and preamps can help when improving a live capture production, but they are not necessary for a stream built from existing nature footage.
Common problems and fixes
- Stream health reports instability: The connection or encoder may not sustain the selected bitrate. Test upload capacity under realistic conditions; try the lower 30 fps target if the footage is 30 fps, or use a codec the encoder supports at YouTube’s corresponding recommended rate.
- The preview is blank or YouTube does not accept the feed: Check that the encoder uses the current stream URL and key, that the key has not been reset, and that the protocol and codec are supported. Never post the stream key publicly.
- Viewers report buffering: Check stream health and whether the connection is sustaining the output. If using lower latency, consider normal latency; YouTube notes lower latency can mean more playback buffering.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: A broadcast exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording and use shorter sessions if a YouTube archive is important, without assuming every shorter session will be archived.
- Audio is absent or poorly balanced: Confirm the encoder is sending an AAC or MP3 audio track and inspect the Live Control Room preview with representative audio before going live.
- The stream stops unexpectedly: Follow the encoder’s and YouTube’s stream-health messages, verify the connection and credentials, and use your planned recovery procedure. Keep local recording where a backup matters.
