If your YouTube live stream bitrate keeps dropping, first check whether the encoder is actually losing outgoing frames or whether viewers are only reporting buffering. Then compare the stream’s bitrate with stable upload capacity, test the network path, and check encoder and hardware indicators before changing equipment. The aim is to find the narrowest cause and make the least disruptive fix.
First, identify what is dropping
Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and your encoder’s statistics at the same time. An encoder’s outgoing bitrate, dropped-frame count, and error messages describe the feed being sent from your setup; viewer buffering describes playback and does not, by itself, prove your outgoing bitrate is unstable.
OBS defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Its official troubleshooting guide distinguishes this connection issue from a problem with encoding or the video source.
- If OBS or another encoder reports dropped frames while YouTube stream health also shows trouble, investigate the outbound connection and configured bitrate first.
- If the encoder shows no connection-related drops but YouTube reports a stream issue, inspect YouTube’s stream health details and the encoder’s error messages.
- If the stream appears healthy at the encoder and in YouTube but viewers report buffering, do not assume the broadcaster’s outgoing bitrate is the cause. The symptom alone does not locate a viewer-side playback problem.
Check whether your upload can sustain the stream
Test upload performance, not just download speed. A fast download result does not establish that your connection can consistently send a live feed. YouTube says the stream’s total bitrate must fit within the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Other people or devices using the same connection can reduce what is available to the encoder. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

- Run an upload speed test while your streaming setup is in realistic use, including the other devices or people who normally share the connection.
- Compare the result with the stream’s total bitrate, including video and audio. Leave the recommended headroom rather than setting the stream at the full measured upload rate.
- If upload speed varies, repeat the test at different times or under different network conditions. A single high reading does not establish stable capacity.
OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for a bitrate, but that is OBS troubleshooting guidance, not a YouTube requirement. Treat it as a starting estimate, then check performance under actual conditions and preserve headroom. YouTube’s guidance and OBS’s troubleshooting advice are both guides, not guarantees.
Match the encoder settings to the connection
Use YouTube’s current encoder table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. The recommended video bitrate differs across those settings; the figures below are examples from the table retrieved on October 3, 2026, not connection requirements or guarantees. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table for other combinations and any updates.

These are YouTube’s recommended video bitrates; your stream also uses audio bitrate, and the connection must have capacity beyond the total stream bitrate. If the connection cannot sustain the recommendation with headroom, lower the encoder bitrate or choose a lower resolution or frame rate. A steady stream at a lower setting is more useful than a configured rate your upload cannot reliably carry.
Use the recommended rate-control and transport settings
- For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR). Variable bitrate can make the outgoing demand fluctuate; use CBR as YouTube recommends.
- YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP.
Confirm the current codec, resolution, frame-rate, bitrate, keyframe, and protocol guidance in YouTube’s live encoder settings table. Do not copy a bitrate from a different codec or resolution row.

Separate a network problem from an encoder or source problem
Look at the encoder’s connection errors, CPU load, preview, and local recording. If the preview and local recording are healthy but the live feed drops frames, that points attention back toward the outbound connection. If the preview or recording is also impaired, investigate the encoding workload or source before blaming the network.
- Check whether CPU load is high when the problem occurs and whether the encoder reports encoding errors.
- Compare the local recording and encoder preview with the stream’s reported symptoms.
- Update the encoder software if it is out of date, then retest before changing multiple settings at once.
Change one likely cause at a time and observe whether the encoder’s dropped-frame indicators and YouTube stream health improve. This makes it easier to tell which adjustment mattered.

Isolate Wi-Fi, software, and the rest of the network path
Test Ethernet against Wi-Fi
If you are streaming over Wi-Fi, test with a wired Ethernet connection to the router. A wired test can help isolate wireless instability; it cannot fix an ISP, routing, or other network fault. OBS recommends a wired connection when Wi-Fi may be unstable.
Check software and network configuration
Consider whether a VPN, firewall or security suite, network-priority utility, or outdated network driver could be interfering with the connection. Change or temporarily disable a suspected item only when you can do so safely, then retest; security software should not be left disabled as a permanent workaround without understanding the risk.

OBS also notes that dynamic bitrate adjustment can reduce frame drops during congestion. It does not repair the underlying connection and can lower video quality, so treat it as a fallback rather than proof that the network is fixed.
Investigate local equipment only when symptoms support it
If there are signs of a local connectivity fault, check modem and router connectivity and inspect the relevant cables and network devices. OBS lists cables, network cards, routers, modems, and other devices as possible fault points, but a dropping bitrate alone is not evidence that a particular device needs replacement. Diagnose before buying replacement hardware.
When to contact your internet provider
If the encoder looks healthy but upload tests show a persistent outbound problem, or if a wired test still shows instability, contact your internet service provider (ISP). Give them the times the issue occurs, upload-test results, and whether it persists over Ethernet; those observations can help distinguish a local wireless problem from a broader connection issue. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance is also useful when the stream-health report points to a platform or ingest issue.
