Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf your YouTube live stream drops frames on a low-cost Indian VPS, first check which OBS counter is rising. “Dropped frames” points to an unstable connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate the VPS cannot sustain; it does not, by itself, show that the CPU is overloaded. Compare OBS statistics and logs with YouTube’s stream-health messages before changing settings. Then lower video bitrate to suit the VPS’s measured, stable outbound connection, and reduce resolution or frame rate if necessary.
Diagnose the counter before changing settings
OBS separates network delivery problems from rendering and encoding delays. Note the exact indicator in OBS Stats and inspect the log around the time the problem occurs. YouTube’s stream-health messages can add clues about what it is receiving, but they do not independently diagnose CPU contention on your VPS.
- Dropped frames: OBS associates this with an unstable connection to the remote streaming server or a configured bitrate the connection cannot sustain. It is a network-delivery symptom, not proof of CPU overload. See the OBS Project connection troubleshooting guide.
- Missed frames due to rendering lag: investigate the work required to render the OBS scene, such as sources and effects, rather than treating this counter as a network diagnosis.
- Skipped frames due to encoding lag: investigate whether the selected encoder and settings can encode the stream within the available resources. On a VPS, CPU quota or throttling may be relevant, but the counter alone does not identify the provider’s cause.
OBS’s Help Portal provides support resources. The OBS troubleshooting page says dropped frames are unlikely to be caused by OBS itself; that does not rule out a constrained VPS, a network route problem, or an encoder configuration issue.
Check YouTube’s stream health and encoder settings
Read the stream-health detail in YouTube Studio alongside OBS’s counters. YouTube’s live stream health messages can flag high or low bitrate, an unsupported codec, a keyframe frequency that is too long, or insufficient incoming video. These warnings help narrow down ingest and configuration issues; they do not establish that the VPS CPU is the cause.

Compare your encoder configuration with YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), documents H.264, H.265 and AV1 settings, recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed four seconds. Its captured guidance page does not show a publication or update year, so the settings below are platform recommendations rather than a dated measurement of your VPS’s capabilities.
| Output profile | Codec | YouTube recommended bitrate | Minimum shown by YouTube |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | H.264 | 6 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | H.264 | 5 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 12 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended values for the listed profiles, not proof that a particular VPS can encode them or sustain their delivery. The appropriate setting depends on the codec, resolution, frame rate, encoder capacity, and stable outbound path.

Lower bitrate using the VPS connection, not your home speed test
The relevant upload path is from the VPS to YouTube. A speed test run on your home connection says nothing reliable about that server’s outbound capacity. Measure sustained outbound throughput from the VPS, ideally toward the service or a suitable endpoint, and leave headroom for variation rather than setting OBS at the best momentary result.
OBS’s 2024-09-30 troubleshooting guidance suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate. Treat that as a heuristic, not a guaranteed safe value for a VPS route or a promise of consistent delivery. OBS also advises following the streaming service’s bitrate limits.

- Record your current OBS video bitrate and note when the dropped-frame indicator rises.
- Measure the VPS’s stable outbound capacity under conditions close to the intended stream, rather than using a creator-side or home-network speed test.
- Lower the video bitrate to a value the VPS can sustain with room for fluctuations. Retest and monitor OBS and YouTube health.
- If drops continue, reduce resolution or frame rate, then test again. Change one setting at a time so you can see which adjustment helps.
Lower bitrate trades image quality for a stream that is easier to deliver. Lowering resolution reduces image detail; lowering frame rate can reduce bitrate and encoding demand but makes motion less smooth. YouTube’s recommended bitrate table illustrates that demand changes with codec, resolution, and frame rate. No single bitrate or output profile is established as best for every low-cost Indian VPS.
Test the actual stream workload
YouTube advises testing before the live event with similar audio and motion, then monitoring stream health. A static desktop may be easier to encode and deliver than a fast-moving game, so test footage should resemble the material you intend to broadcast. Check both OBS counters and YouTube’s health detail while the test runs.

- Check YouTube’s health messages for bitrate, codec, keyframe, or insufficient-video warnings.
When dynamic bitrate helps—and when to investigate the VPS
OBS can adjust bitrate dynamically when the connection cannot keep up. It may reduce drops by lowering the stream’s quality as conditions change, but it does not repair the underlying connection issue. OBS’s guide cautions that dynamic bitrate “doesn’t solve the root cause of dropped frames and should only be used if you cannot resolve the underlying connection issue.”
If a lower fixed bitrate and representative testing do not resolve the problem, use measurements and logs to investigate sustained CPU availability, possible VPS CPU quota or throttling, and the VPS-to-ingest network route. The official guidance cited here does not test Indian VPS providers, establish a universal CPU threshold, or identify a provider-specific fix. Assess any plan by its measured sustained CPU and outbound connectivity rather than assuming location or price alone predicts performance.

Troubleshoot common symptoms
| What you observe | What to check | Useful next step |
|---|---|---|
| OBS “Dropped frames” rises | Stable VPS outbound throughput, configured video bitrate, and the YouTube ingest path | Lower bitrate, leave more headroom, and retest. Do not infer CPU overload from this counter alone. |
| OBS reports rendering lag | Whether OBS can render the scene and its sources and effects | Investigate rendering workload separately from network delivery. |
| OBS reports encoding lag | Encoder choice, output settings, and available VPS CPU resources | Reduce encoding demand and review VPS CPU availability or throttling with measurements and logs. |
| YouTube flags high or low bitrate | Configured bitrate against the selected profile and actual incoming stream | Adjust bitrate and retest; platform recommendations do not guarantee the VPS can sustain them. |
| YouTube flags codec or keyframe frequency | Codec support and keyframe interval in the encoder | Use a documented codec and a two-second keyframe frequency; do not exceed YouTube’s four-second guidance. |
| YouTube reports insufficient incoming video | Whether the encoder is delivering video consistently and what OBS logs show at that time | Correlate the warning with OBS counters and connection measurements before choosing a fix. |
