Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf FFmpeg is sending a finite video file to YouTube, the feed stops when FFmpeg reaches the end unless you tell it to loop. Put -stream_loop -1 before the relevant -i option to repeat that input indefinitely. For file playback that needs to run at live speed, add -re before the input as well. Then check FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s broadcast status if the stream still ends.
Why does a YouTube livestream stop when the video ends?
A video file is finite. Once FFmpeg has read all of it, it reaches end of file and stops producing packets from that input unless looping is configured. If that file was the media being sent to YouTube, the incoming feed stops too.
YouTube treats the incoming stream—the encoder’s feed—and the broadcast—the event viewers watch—as separate things. If automatic stop is enabled for the broadcast, YouTube says it will end the broadcast around a minute after video stops arriving. That is a likely explanation for this symptom, but diagnosing a particular stream requires its FFmpeg command and logs, along with the broadcast settings. YouTube Live Streaming API documentation
How do I loop an FFmpeg input file for a YouTube livestream?
- Place the loop option before the input it controls. Use
-stream_loop -1before that input’s-i. FFmpeg defines-1as infinite looping; the option applies to an input, so put it before the correct-iif the command has multiple inputs. - Pace file playback in real time when needed. Add
-rebefore the file input. FFmpeg documents this as reading at the native frame rate, equivalent to-readrate 1, and useful when sending a file as live input. - Keep the rest of the command appropriate to your media and ingest. Retain suitable audio/video mapping, encoding, and output options for your file and YouTube ingest configuration. The following is a schematic example, not a tested command for every file or FFmpeg build:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 [encoding and audio/video options] -f flv rtmp://your-youtube-ingest-url/your-stream-key - Start FFmpeg and verify the feed. Check the process output and YouTube stream status rather than assuming that a running command means the broadcast is live.
Do not apply -re indiscriminately to a source that is already live. FFmpeg warns that imposing a low read rate on a live source can cause packet loss. The online FFmpeg command-line documentation is regenerated nightly; if an option behaves differently with your build, check ffmpeg -h full or the documentation installed with that version. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the YouTube stream and broadcast separately
A stream is the feed sent by the encoder; a broadcast is the viewer-facing event. Fixing file looping addresses a feed that stops at EOF, but it does not reverse a broadcast that has already completed.
For API-controlled broadcasts, YouTube documents stopping video transmission and transitioning the broadcast to complete as the normal explicit end procedure. A broadcast with automatic stop enabled can also complete after the incoming feed stops. YouTube broadcast transition documentation

For API transitions to testing or live, the bound stream’s status.streamStatus must be active. A transition to live may first show liveStarting: YouTube says the transition usually takes 5 to 10 seconds and can take up to a minute. Check the status until it reaches live before treating that interval as a failure. YouTube live stream resource documentation
Troubleshoot a stream that still goes offline
- Confirm the option placement. Verify that
-stream_loop -1is before the-ifor the file that actually ends. In a multi-input command, looping a different input will not repeat the intended video. - Check pacing. For file playback that needs real-time delivery, confirm
-reis before that file’s input. Do not add it to an already-live source without a specific reason. - Inspect FFmpeg at the drop time. Look at whether the process exited at EOF, reported an encoding error, or remained running but lost its RTMP output. The relevant stderr and output logs distinguish these cases.
- Read both YouTube statuses. Check whether the bound stream is active and whether the broadcast is testing, live, liveStarting, or complete. An inactive bound stream prevents API transitions to testing or live.
- If FFmpeg is healthy but viewers see no live broadcast, check the broadcast lifecycle. Determine whether the broadcast was completed or automatic-stop behavior took effect after incoming video stopped.
- Allow for startup transition time. If YouTube reports
liveStarting, wait and check again; the documented transition can take up to a minute.
Without the exact command, logs, FFmpeg version, and YouTube broadcast settings, the cause of an individual outage cannot be confirmed from the symptom alone.

Choose between looping a file and keeping a continuous source
| Approach | Content behavior | What to monitor |
|---|---|---|
Loop the existing file with -stream_loop -1 |
Repeats the same input indefinitely. | Confirm the option targets the right input; monitor the FFmpeg process, output, and YouTube broadcast state. |
| Use a source or process designed to keep providing live media | Can provide continuous or variable content rather than repeating one file. | Ensure the source and process keep running, and check that the FFmpeg and YouTube configuration support the intended feed. |
The first option directly addresses a finite file reaching EOF. A different continuous source may suit content that should change rather than repeat, but it still needs operational monitoring and a compatible YouTube broadcast configuration.
