YouTube Live Stream Goes Offline When a VPN Reconnects: OBS Routing Fixes

Start with OBS’s default network binding, then test whether the VPN is disrupting the route to YouTube’s ingest server.

If your YouTube live stream drops just as your VPN reconnects, start by restoring OBS’s default network binding, then test the stream with the VPN temporarily off. OBS identifies VPN software as a possible cause of an unstable connection to the streaming server, but the timing alone does not prove which VPN setting or route is responsible.

Why does my YouTube stream disconnect when my VPN reconnects?

OBS sends the stream from your computer to the streaming service’s ingest server; OBS itself does not relay it. A VPN reconnect can disrupt that network path, and OBS notes that VPN software may make the connection to the streaming server unstable. Dropped frames indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate; if enough frames are dropped, the stream can disconnect.

The VPN is a sensible first suspect when the failure coincides with a reconnect, not a confirmed diagnosis. If the stream also fails with the VPN off, investigate the computer’s connection to YouTube’s ingest service and whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate.

Fix the OBS connection in a controlled order

  1. Record what happens. Note whether OBS reports dropped frames or a disconnection, and whether the problem starts immediately after the VPN reconnects. This helps distinguish a connection interruption from a broader issue that also occurs without the VPN.
  2. Restore OBS’s default network binding. In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network. Set Bind to IP to Default, as the OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide recommends.
  3. Test without the VPN. Temporarily disable the VPN and stream again. If the stream stays stable, the VPN path is implicated, but that test does not tell you which VPN option will fix it.
  4. Investigate the VPN route for your setup. If the VPN-off test is stable, consult the documentation for your specific operating system and VPN client. Check whether it offers routing or split-tunneling controls that can keep OBS on a stable path after the VPN reconnects. The correct settings depend on that client and setup; there is no universal routing recipe established here.
  5. If it still fails, check the connection and bitrate. Since OBS sends video directly to the ingest service, look beyond OBS itself: check the network path to YouTube and whether your connection can sustain the bitrate configured for the stream.

Optional OBS network settings and protocol changes

Windows network options

On Windows, OBS lists Network Optimizations and TCP pacing as optional troubleshooting settings. The OBS guide says some users report improvement; these are tests, not guaranteed fixes for a route interruption during VPN reconnection.

Dynamic bitrate

Dynamic bitrate adjustment can lower the bitrate when the connection is congested. OBS cautions that this does not solve the underlying connection problem, and the video quality falls when the bitrate is reduced.

RTMPS and ingest endpoints

YouTube supports multiple ingestion protocols, including RTMPS. OBS lists YouTube RTMPS endpoints, but protocol availability does not establish that changing protocol or switching between primary and backup endpoints fixes a VPN route interruption. Treat those changes as separate troubleshooting tests, not a reliable way to preserve a broadcast through a local network-path change. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and ingest documentation and the OBS service endpoint configuration.

Common symptoms and what to check

What you observe What to check
Dropped frames begin when the VPN reconnects Set OBS Bind to IP to Default, then run the temporary VPN-off test.
The stream is stable with the VPN disabled Investigate the VPN client’s routing or split-tunneling options for your operating system; the test implicates the VPN path but does not identify a specific setting.
The stream also fails without the VPN Check the connection to YouTube’s ingest service and whether the configured bitrate is sustainable.
You are considering a protocol or endpoint change YouTube supports multiple ingest protocols, but the available documentation does not establish that switching protocols or endpoints repairs a VPN reconnect interruption.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running without relying on the network path from your home computer, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera.

  • Any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, streamed as uploaded without re-encoding or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required.

Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. The same product is available on daily, weekly, six-month, and yearly billing. Visit StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
