Neither Windows nor Linux is proven to use less electricity for a YouTube looping stream in every setup. To find out which costs less for you, measure each complete system at the wall while it runs the same stream, then multiply its average power use by your streaming hours and local electricity rate. The machine, encoding workload, peripherals and configuration can matter more than the operating system.
How to calculate the electricity cost of a 24/7 stream
Use measured average power, not the wattage printed on a power supply. That number describes the supply’s rating, not what the whole computer draws while streaming. If power fluctuates, measure energy over a representative interval and divide by the interval to find average power. The U.S. Department of Energy’s “Measuring Standby Power” guidance explains this time-averaging principle; its IEC 62301 discussion concerns standby and low-power measurements, not certification of a continuously encoding stream.
- Measure the complete setup. Use a plug-in electricity meter for a desktop or server where practical, and record kWh over a representative streaming period. Include the same continuously powered display, external storage or other peripherals in both measurements. If you measure at a UPS or another point in the power chain, use the same measurement location for both systems; conversion losses can affect the total.
- Run a comparable workload. Use the same video, resolution, frame rate, codec where possible, bitrate, network conditions and stream duration. Let each system reach its normal streaming state before recording. A brief watt reading may miss fluctuations; a time-based kWh reading captures average use across the interval.
- Convert average watts to energy. Energy (kWh) = average power (W) × hours ÷ 1,000.
- Apply your tariff. Energy charge = kWh × your electricity price per kWh. Check your bill for the applicable rate and whether tiered pricing, taxes, fixed fees or demand charges change what you actually pay.
For continuous operation over a 30-day month, monthly energy is average watts × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000. That assumes the stream really runs throughout all 30 days. For example, a hypothetical system averaging 50 W would use 36 kWh in that period (50 × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000); multiply 36 by your own per-kWh rate for its energy charge. This example is arithmetic, not a claim about typical PC or server consumption.
How to make the Windows-versus-Linux comparison fair
Test the actual Windows PC and Linux server you are considering, rather than comparing labels such as “desktop” and “server.” Keep the video and output settings alike, measure each system under the same conditions, and write down what the meter includes. If the two machines have different hardware, the result compares those complete configurations; it does not isolate the effect of Windows versus Linux.

- On-the-Go Convenience: With an integrated handle and lightweight design (2.8 lbs), our lap desk is portable for travel or moving around the house, offering flexibility in any space.
- Hardware: CPU, GPU, motherboard, storage, power supply and fans all affect consumption. A rack server is not automatically more efficient than a desktop.
- Encoding work: Resolution, frame rate, codec and software versus hardware encoding affect the work being done. YouTube’s “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions” guidance lists settings and bitrate recommendations by configuration. Use the same intended output on both hosts rather than choosing a bitrate in isolation.
- Video content: A static image, moving footage, overlays or multiple outputs can create different encoding workloads. Measure the actual content you plan to loop.
- Software and power profile: Drivers, background services, power settings and idle behavior may differ. The available evidence does not establish an operating-system-specific winner in a controlled test of this streaming task.
- Whole-setup boundary: A monitor left on, network equipment, external drives and UPS losses can change the bill. Decide what belongs in the comparison and count it consistently.
What the measured difference means for your bill
Once you have average watts for each configuration, calculate each system’s kWh for the same number of streaming hours and apply your own rate. The difference in energy charges is the practical electricity saving. Keep the hours, tariff and included equipment visible in your notes so the estimate can be checked or updated when your use changes.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program cites 11¢/kWh as an average price at U.S. federal facilities as of July 2024. That is a dated federal-facility example, not a universal household rate; use your own bill, especially outside the United States. Energy charges are also not the whole cost of ownership: hardware purchase, maintenance, reliability and any cloud-service subscription are separate considerations.

Does a Linux server use less electricity than a Windows PC?
There is no evidence-based universal answer. A lower measured draw on one Linux machine could reflect its processor, components, settings or workload rather than Linux itself. To attribute a difference to the operating system, you would need to control the hardware and stream workload rather than compare two unlike machines. The DOE’s data-center efficiency guidance discusses measuring server power and accounting for varying load; it does not establish current consumer-server wattage or a Windows-versus-Linux result for YouTube streams.
Power-management settings can reduce energy use, but settings that put a host to sleep can interrupt an always-on stream. Test any changes without disrupting the live broadcast, and verify that the machine stays awake and encoding as intended.

Keeping a looping stream online: local host or cloud
YouTube’s “Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder” guide describes encoder-based streaming and lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming of pre-recorded videos. That listing does not establish a service’s current price, performance or total energy footprint. A local PC or server lets you measure your own electricity directly; cloud streaming changes the cost comparison by adding a service charge, so compare the full costs and the reliability and maintenance you need rather than energy alone.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The stream loops in the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it includes 10 GB storage per slot, pooled across active slots, playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. The first day is free with no card, once per account. For a month, the listed price is $9.99 per month. Cloud service cost is not directly comparable to the measured electricity charge alone; weigh it against your full local setup and maintenance costs.

Troubleshooting an unexpectedly high or low reading
- The meter reading jumps around: Extend the measurement interval and use total kWh divided by elapsed hours to calculate average watts. A momentary reading may not represent a fluctuating workload.
- The comparison seems implausibly different: Check that both systems ran the same video and output settings, and confirm that you included the same peripherals and measured at the same point in the power chain.
- The bill estimate does not match the measured energy: Confirm the hours and tariff, then check whether your bill includes tiered rates, taxes, fixed service fees or demand charges beyond energy use.
- The stream stops after a power-saving change: Undo the setting that allowed sleep or suspended encoding, restore an always-awake streaming configuration, and verify the broadcast before leaving the system unattended.
