You can make money on YouTube through watch-page ads, Shorts Feed ads, YouTube Premium, channel memberships, paid interactions, Shopping, merchandise, and brand partnerships. These routes have different eligibility rules and revenue models: reaching a subscriber or view threshold does not guarantee YouTube Partner Program acceptance or a particular income.
Ways to earn money on YouTube
YouTube-native income generally comes through the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). Sponsorships and some product sales can also earn money outside YouTube’s ad-revenue sharing. Features and availability vary by country and channel, so check the Earn area in YouTube Studio and the official guidance for your location.
Watch-page ads
Eligible YPP creators can share revenue from ads on public long-form videos and other eligible watch-page playback. You must accept the Watch Page Monetization Module and enable ads. A video’s suitability for ads remains subject to YouTube’s guidelines and review. YouTube’s monetization options
Shorts Feed ads
Eligible partners who accept the Shorts Monetization Module can share revenue from ads shown between Shorts in the feed. This is separate from watch-page advertising, and only eligible Shorts views count. YouTube Shorts monetization policies

YouTube Premium
Creators may receive part of a Premium subscriber’s fee when that subscriber watches their content, subject to the relevant module and feature conditions. This is separate from ad revenue. YouTube’s earnings overview
Memberships and paid audience interactions
- Channel memberships: Viewers pay recurring monthly amounts for perks you provide to members.
- Super Chat and Super Stickers: During eligible live streams and Premieres, viewers can pay to highlight messages or show animated images in live chat.
- Super Thanks: Viewers can pay for an animation and highlighted comment on eligible videos or Shorts.
Each feature has its own conditions and availability. YouTube’s earning options
Shopping and products
You may be able to connect a store and showcase your own merchandise. Eligible creators can also promote or tag products from other brands through YouTube Shopping, including its affiliate program. Brand partnerships
A sponsorship is negotiated between a creator and a brand, rather than paid through YPP revenue sharing. Compensation, terms, and suitability depend on the specific relationship. YouTube also identifies working with brands as a possible earning route. YouTube’s creator tips

How many subscribers do you need to monetize?
YouTube’s published guidance describes two different YPP thresholds. The earlier-access level can unlock fan-funding and Shopping features in eligible countries; the higher level applies to watch-page ads, Shorts ad sharing, and YouTube Premium revenue. The thresholds below are eligibility criteria, not income forecasts or guarantees of acceptance. Expanded YPP overview · Feature eligibility guidance
| YPP level | Subscriber and activity requirement | What it can unlock |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier access | 500 subscribers, three valid public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months or 3 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days | Fan-funding and Shopping features, where available and subject to feature-specific rules |
| Higher threshold | 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days | Watch-page ads, Shorts ad sharing, and YouTube Premium revenue, subject to feature-specific rules |
Shorts-feed watch time does not count toward the 4,000-hour route. YouTube also says views and watch time from paid ad campaigns do not count toward these thresholds. The figures are from YouTube Help’s guidance current when accessed in 2026; check the live requirements before making a plan.

Thresholds are only part of eligibility
- Your channel must satisfy YouTube’s applicable policies and account requirements, and YouTube reviews applications.
- Eligibility and individual features depend on country and feature-specific requirements.
- Meeting a threshold does not promise acceptance, access to every feature, or any particular earnings.
Review the YouTube Partner Program overview and eligibility requirements and the channel’s Earn area for the rules that apply to you.
How YouTube’s revenue shares work
YouTube’s published percentages refer to different revenue bases and modules, so they should not be treated as comparable cuts of the same gross amount.
Recommended Free Tools
| Revenue type | Published share | What the percentage applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Watch-page ads | 55% | Net revenue under the Watch Page Monetization Module |
| Shorts Feed ads | 45% | Revenue allocated to the creator based on their share of views from the Shorts Creator Pool |
| Memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks | 70% | Net revenue under the Commerce Product Module |
These are YouTube’s published earnings figures, not a promise of what an individual creator will receive. YouTube states: “There are no guarantees under the YouTube partner agreement about how much or whether you’ll be paid.” See the YouTube partner earnings overview for the applicable terms and explanations.

Shorts views and policy limits
Shorts ad revenue requires YPP participation and acceptance of the Shorts Monetization Module; eligible views count from the date you accept it. YouTube says views may be ineligible when Shorts are non-original, artificial or fake, or inconsistent with advertiser-friendly guidelines. Shorts monetization policies
Monetization also depends on channel-wide and video-level policy compliance. YouTube may turn off monetization for channels that have not uploaded a video or posted for six months or more, and policy violations can result in loss of monetization regardless of subscriber or watch-hour totals. There is no universal best route or reliable earnings estimate in YouTube’s eligibility and revenue-share guidance. Compare options by the work and conditions they involve:
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
- Eligibility and geography: Check thresholds, country availability, and feature-specific requirements first.
- Format: Watch-page ads suit eligible long-form viewing; Shorts ads depend on eligible Shorts views; paid interactions are tied to eligible live streams, Premieres, videos, or Shorts; memberships support recurring perks.
- Revenue basis: Ads and Premium use platform revenue allocation, fan funding comes from viewer payments, product income comes from sales or affiliate activity, and sponsorships are negotiated with brands.
- Work and control: Platform features involve YouTube’s rules, modules, and review. Memberships require useful perks, stores involve product operations, and brand deals require finding partners and agreeing on terms.

Keep an always-on YouTube stream running
If your channel uses uploaded videos in an ongoing YouTube live stream, a continuous stream can be one part of a broader channel strategy, not a separate guarantee of monetization. YouTube eligibility and content rules still apply. For a cloud option, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the video in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and includes a first free day without a card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, then start the free day.
Check current YouTube terms
YouTube’s guidance surfaced a notice that YPP terms are scheduled for an update starting February 1, 2027, with creators asked to review and accept updated terms by January 31, 2027. Because this is a future-dated notice relative to the guidance accessed in 2026, check YouTube Studio and official Help pages for the current status and deadlines before relying on it. YPP overview
