If YouTube stops after a playlist video, first check that playback is still in the playlist, then check Autoplay on the device you’re using. Playlist progression and YouTube’s standard Autoplay setting are related but distinct: Autoplay starts another related video, while a playlist has its own next item. The right fix depends on whether you’re using the YouTube app, a browser, a TV, casting, or an embedded player.
First, check whether the playlist is still playing
Open the video from the playlist and confirm that the playlist panel or queue is active. If the next video is an unrelated recommendation—or playback stops instead of advancing—the player may no longer be in the playlist context. YouTube describes standard Autoplay as playing another related video when the current one ends; a playlist’s next item is a separate sequence. YouTube Help explains Autoplay and where to find its controls.
Find the Autoplay setting on your device
The control’s location varies by platform. Check it on the device where the problem occurs: YouTube says the setting can be on in the mobile app and off on a computer.
- Computer: Open the video’s watch page and look for the Autoplay switch at the bottom of the player.
- Android or iPhone/iPad: Look for the switch at the top of the player. You can also open YouTube app Settings → Autoplay.
- YouTube TV app: Open Settings → Autoplay.
- Casting: On the phone or tablet controlling playback, expand the control bar or queue and check its Autoplay switch.
If the switch is missing while a playlist is playing, that does not by itself prove that playback is broken. In a YouTube Community reply dated September 12, 2025, a Product Expert reported that the toggle may not appear in that context. Community answers can be unverified or out of date, so treat this as an interface-dependent report, not a universal YouTube rule. See the Community discussion.

Keep the player active until the video ends
On mobile and computer, scrolling past the player or typing—for example, writing a comment or search—can prevent the next video from starting automatically. Keep the player in view and avoid interacting as the video ends. YouTube’s Help page states: “If you scroll past the video player or type something, like a comment or a search, the next video won’t automatically play.” YouTube’s Autoplay guidance covers this behavior.
Check for inactivity timeouts
YouTube says Autoplay stops after 30 minutes of inactivity on a mobile network and after four hours on Wi-Fi. If playback stopped after being left alone, resume it and check whether the connection type and inactivity period fit those documented limits. These are YouTube’s stated thresholds, not a guarantee that every stop has the same cause.

Check supervised-account restrictions
A parent or guardian can disable Autoplay for a supervised child account, and the child cannot turn it back on. YouTube also says Autoplay is off by default for users aged 13–17; those users can change the setting unless supervision restrictions apply. YouTube Help describes supervised experiences and controls.
If you’re using an embedded YouTube player
Autoplay in an embed can be blocked by browser policies, even if the YouTube app’s setting is enabled. YouTube’s IFrame Player API documentation notes that most browsers can block autoplay in desktop, mobile, and other environments under certain conditions. This points to a browser or embedded-player restriction rather than necessarily an account setting. Check the YouTube IFrame Player API documentation.

Playlist repeat is different from Autoplay
If you want the playlist to start again after its last item, turn on loop or repeat. Open a video in the playlist, expand the playlist panel, and select Loop. On a TV or console, select Repeat until the player indicates that the playlist will repeat. Loop restarts the list at its end; it is not the control for advancing once to the next item. YouTube Help explains how to loop videos and playlists.
Quick troubleshooting by symptom
| What happens | What to check |
|---|---|
| The video ends and nothing plays | Confirm the playlist or queue is active, then check Autoplay on the device in use. |
| A recommended video plays instead of the playlist’s next item | Reopen the video from the playlist and confirm the playlist panel or queue remains active. |
| The Autoplay switch is missing | Check the platform-specific control location. A missing toggle during playlist playback has been reported by a Community Product Expert, but is not established as a universal rule. |
| Playback stops after leaving it alone | Check whether the YouTube-documented inactivity threshold applies: 30 minutes on a mobile network or four hours on Wi-Fi. |
| It works in the app but not in an embed | Consider browser autoplay policies that can block playback in embedded players. |
| The playlist plays once but does not start over | Use Loop or Repeat for the playlist; standard Autoplay is a different control. |
Or let it run in the cloud
