Change a playlist thumbnail on a computer
- Open the playlist on YouTube.
- Select Edit Image.
- Select Choose from library.
- Pick the image you want to use as the playlist thumbnail.
These are the steps in YouTube Help’s computer instructions.
Change a playlist thumbnail on Android
- Open the playlist and select Edit Image.
- Choose an image from your library, take a photo, or select Create with AI if that option appears.
- If editing tools are available, add text, filters, or stickers. For AI creation, choose a theme and select Create. YouTube Help notes that changing a few words in the description can produce more options.
These options are documented in YouTube’s Android instructions. The page does not establish that every account or app version will show every control.
Change a playlist thumbnail on iPhone or iPad
The documented iPhone and iPad flow offers the same basic choices: open the playlist, select Edit Image, then choose an image from the library, take a photo, or create an image with AI where available. Text, filters, and stickers may also be offered. See YouTube Help for iPhone and iPad for the platform-specific instructions.

Choose the right way to make the image
- Use an existing image: the most direct option if you already have artwork or a suitable picture.
- Take a photo: a quick way to make an original image in the mobile app.
- Create with AI: an option on the documented mobile flows when it is available to your account and app.
- Add text or simple effects: mobile editing may offer text, filters, and stickers for light adjustments.
Playlist cover requirements versus video thumbnail rules
A playlist thumbnail is separate from a video or Shorts thumbnail. YouTube’s playlist-image instructions do not state a required image size, aspect ratio, file format, or file-size limit. Do not treat dimensions in YouTube’s separate custom video-thumbnail guidance as playlist-art requirements; that page covers video thumbnails.
If “Edit Image” or an option is missing
YouTube’s help pages document the controls but do not explain why a particular option might be absent or provide an account, region, or app-version availability matrix. Check that you have opened the playlist itself, then compare the visible controls with the instructions for your device. If the documented option still does not appear, report the platform and the controls you can see rather than assuming a particular cause.
