For a reliable YouTube Live stream, choose an ingest resolution and frame rate your encoder and upload connection can sustain, then match YouTube’s bitrate recommendation to that setting and codec. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval (never more than 4 seconds), and RTMPS when your encoder supports it. Its ingest guidance lists frame rates up to 60 fps.
What YouTube receives—and what viewers see
These settings apply to a live stream sent from an encoder to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS. They are not the separate bitrate recommendations for uploading a video file. YouTube detects the encoder settings and transcodes the incoming live stream into multiple output formats, so selecting an ingest resolution does not guarantee that every viewer will see that exact resolution. YouTube’s live encoder settings describe the ingest requirements and recommendations.
What resolution and frame rate should you use?
Pick the highest combination your encoder and sustained upload connection can handle reliably—not simply the highest option available. Higher resolutions carry more detail; higher frame rates can make motion smoother, but both affect the amount of data your encoder must send. If reliability matters more than extra detail or motion smoothness, step down to a setting you can maintain.
YouTube recommends leaving resolution and frame-rate detection on automatic. For manual control, use a custom stream key and select the manual resolution options in Live Control Room. The listed maximum ingest frame rate is 60 fps. YouTube’s Help guidance retrieved October 3, 2026, does not show a publication or revision date.

YouTube Live recommended ingest bitrates
Use the row matching your resolution, frame rate and video codec. These are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates in Mbps, not universal minimums. The H.264 target is higher than the AV1/H.265 target in every listed row. YouTube Help’s encoder-settings table is the source for all values below; it is live-ingest guidance, not upload-encoding guidance.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
For example, a 1080p60 H.264 stream has a recommended ingest bitrate of 17 Mbps; a 1080p60 AV1 or H.265 stream has a recommended 12 Mbps target. Those are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection or encoder can sustain the stream. Run an upload speed test as YouTube advises, and leave practical headroom rather than treating a peak test result as a sustained upload rate. YouTube does not specify a numeric headroom requirement in this guidance.

Encoder settings that matter
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP; the encoder must support it. To reveal the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room, follow YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Video codec: H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1. Select the matching bitrate column above.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3. YouTube’s guidance supports 5.1 surround sound over RTMP/RTMPS only with AAC.
Advanced video settings
YouTube’s documented recommendations include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 8-bit SDR. For HDR, its guidance specifies H.265 (HEVC) and 10-bit, and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. At 3840 × 2160 and above, it specifies at least two AV1 tile columns. These are recommendations and codec-specific qualifications; they are not mandatory settings for every encoder. Check that your encoder exposes the relevant controls before trying to match them.
Set up and test a continuous stream
- Choose a sustainable mode. Decide on resolution and frame rate based on the encoder’s capabilities and your available upload connection. Run an upload speed test; allow operating headroom instead of relying on the measured peak.
- Choose automatic or manual detection. Leave detection automatic unless you need to set the resolution yourself. For manual selection, create or use a custom stream key and set its resolution options in Live Control Room.
- Configure the encoder. Select the matching codec and recommended bitrate, set CBR, and use a 2-second keyframe interval without exceeding 4 seconds. Configure the audio codec as AAC or MP3.
- Send over RTMPS if supported. Use the RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room; if your encoder does not support RTMPS, YouTube also lists RTMP.
- Test a representative program. YouTube advises testing before the stream. Include audio and movement like the actual content; a static screen alone may not expose problems that appear with motion or sound.
- Monitor while live. Watch stream health and review YouTube’s messages during the event so you can react to ingest problems.
- Account for latency. YouTube says 2160p/4K streams are optimized for quality at normal latency and do not have the option to improve for low latency.
Common problems and fixes
- Stream health warns about bitrate or instability: The upload link may not be sustaining the configured rate. Retest the connection under realistic conditions, reduce resolution or frame rate, or choose a codec and bitrate your setup can sustain. Do not raise the bitrate above YouTube’s recommended target as a first fix.
- Manual resolution is unavailable: Automatic detection is the default. Use a custom stream key and configure manual resolution options in Live Control Room if you need control.
- Encoder cannot connect over RTMPS: Confirm the encoder supports RTMPS and that you copied the RTMPS URL and current stream key from Live Control Room. If it does not support RTMPS, YouTube’s listed protocol options include RTMP.
- Motion looks poor or the stream becomes unreliable: Retest with movement representative of the program. If the encoder or network cannot maintain the selected mode, lower the frame rate or resolution and use the corresponding bitrate recommendation.
- Low-latency controls are missing for a 4K stream: This is expected in YouTube’s guidance: 2160p streams use normal latency and have no low-latency improvement option.
Keep a YouTube stream running continuously
The encoder settings above govern what is sent to YouTube; they do not by themselves keep an unattended stream running. A do-it-yourself encoder setup still depends on the computer, encoder and internet connection continuing to operate. YouTube’s live encoder documentation does not require dedicated hardware; a hardware encoder is one possible setup, not a requirement.
