YouTube Live accepts AV1 for SDR streams at up to 60 fps, including 4K/2160p at 60 fps. YouTube’s current encoder settings list a 10–40 Mbps bitrate range for AV1/H.265 at that resolution and frame rate. AV1 is not supported for HDR; YouTube’s HDR guidance specifies H.265 (HEVC) instead.
AV1 4K60 requirements for YouTube Live
YouTube’s live encoder settings list AV1 as a supported video codec, frame rates up to 60 fps, and 4K/2160p at 60 fps. The listed bitrate range for AV1/H.265 at 2160p60 is 10–40 Mbps. These are the values on YouTube’s current settings page; it does not display a publication or revision date, so check it again when configuring a future stream.
| Setting | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Video codec | AV1 is accepted for live ingestion. |
| Resolution and frame rate | 2160p (4K) at 60 fps is listed. |
| Bitrate at 2160p60 | 10 Mbps minimum; 40 Mbps maximum for AV1/H.265. |
| Bitrate mode | CBR. |
| Keyframe interval | Two seconds recommended; no more than four seconds. |
| AV1 tiling at 3840×2160 and above | At least two tile columns. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure transport. |
The 35 Mbps recommendation shown in the same resolution-and-frame-rate row applies to H.264, not AV1. Do not use it as YouTube’s AV1 target; for AV1, stay within the listed 10–40 Mbps range and select a bitrate your upload connection can sustain steadily.
AV1 is for SDR, not YouTube Live HDR
The support answer needs an important qualification: YouTube’s encoder settings state, “AV1 is not supported for HDR.” YouTube’s HDR streaming guidance says HDR live streaming is currently supported only with H.265 (HEVC). If HDR is a requirement, use the codec specified for HDR rather than configuring AV1.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Configure an AV1 4K60 stream
- Confirm the target is SDR. AV1 4K60 is supported for SDR ingestion; it is not the HDR option in YouTube’s current guidance.
- Set the output format. Choose AV1 video, 3840×2160 (2160p), and 60 fps in an encoder that exposes those controls.
- Set bitrate behavior. Use CBR and a bitrate from 10 to 40 Mbps. Ensure the available upload connection can maintain the selected rate; a higher setting is not useful if the connection cannot carry it reliably.
- Set keyframes. Use a two-second keyframe interval, and do not exceed four seconds.
- Check AV1 tiling. At 3840×2160 and above, configure at least two tile columns if the encoder exposes AV1 tiling settings.
- Choose transport and connect. Use RTMPS where available, as YouTube recommends it, and send the stream to YouTube using the stream key from the channel’s live-stream setup. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish or share it.
- Verify the live preview. Start the encoder, check YouTube’s live control room for an incoming signal, and confirm the preview is stable before relying on the stream.
YouTube’s encoder overview notes that an encoder can be software or standalone hardware. Its listed examples do not establish that a particular consumer encoder supports AV1 at 4K60: product capability must be verified from that manufacturer’s own specifications. Do not infer AV1 support from a device that is described only as supporting 4K60 or HEVC.
Common configuration problems
- HDR stream fails or is not accepted as expected: AV1 is not supported for YouTube Live HDR. Use H.265 (HEVC) for HDR as stated in YouTube’s HDR requirements, or configure an SDR stream.
- Encoder cannot select AV1 at 4K60: YouTube’s platform support does not guarantee that your chosen software or hardware can encode that combination. Check its specific codec, resolution, frame-rate, and tiling capabilities.
- Stream drops or preview stutters: The selected bitrate may exceed what the upload connection can sustain consistently. Reduce the bitrate while keeping it within YouTube’s 10–40 Mbps AV1/H.265 range for 2160p60, then verify the feed again.
- Stream does not meet encoder requirements: Recheck CBR, a two-second recommended keyframe interval (maximum four seconds), the required AV1 tile columns for 4K and above, and RTMPS transport.
For a prerecorded 24/7 YouTube channel
AV1 4K60 acceptance matters when an encoder is sending a live feed. If your goal instead is to keep uploaded prerecorded videos playing as a YouTube live stream around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera, and your computer does not need to remain on. YouTube support for AV1 does not by itself verify AV1 encoding support in any particular service or device, so confirm the required workflow and output with the provider.
