If your YouTube RTMP stream started dropping after you changed encoders, compare the actual output settings first: protocol and destination, video codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode and value, and keyframe interval. Then verify the stream URL and key, and use OBS statistics and YouTube’s Live Control Room health messages to tell a network problem from encoding overload. A timing link does not prove the codec caused the drop; change one relevant setting at a time and test before going live.
Check the encoder settings that changed
Do not rely on preset names such as “high quality” or “YouTube.” Record the values before and after the change, then compare the outgoing stream with YouTube’s ingest guidance. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video ingest. Its guidance recommends CBR, up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube’s encoder settings and live-streaming requirements are the reference for your actual output format.
- Protocol and destination: Confirm whether the encoder is sending RTMP or RTMPS and to the intended YouTube server URL.
- Video codec: Check the codec actually selected by the encoder, not just the preset label. H.264, HEVC, and AV1 have different bitrate recommendations.
- Resolution and frame rate: Check both output values. Increasing either can increase bitrate needs and encoding workload.
- Bitrate mode and rate: Use CBR as YouTube recommends, and match the bitrate to the codec, resolution, and frame rate combination.
- Keyframe interval: Set two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: Record the audio codec and settings as part of the comparison, especially if the encoder profile changed more than video output.
YouTube says Live Control Room usually detects resolution and frame rate automatically. Manual resolution selection is associated with a custom stream key that has manual settings enabled, so do not assume a manual value is controlling every stream.
YouTube’s published bitrate guidance
The figures below are YouTube Help’s published ingest bitrate recommendations and minimums, accessed in 2026. They are not universal settings: choose the row matching the incoming codec, resolution, and frame rate. “AV1/HEVC” is the combined category shown in YouTube’s table.

YouTube’s table also includes 480p and 360p; consult the current table for those exact values. Its guidance recommends progressive scan, square pixels, CABAC, and Rec. 709 for SDR. HDR has separate constraints: YouTube specifies HEVC for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Do not carry SDR assumptions across to an HDR setup.
Verify the YouTube URL and stream key
The stream URL and key do different jobs: the URL is the server destination; the key identifies or authorizes the feed. Open the intended broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room and compare both values with the encoder’s current profile. A profile or setup change can leave an old destination or key in place even if the video settings look correct. YouTube explains the fields in its guide to managing a live stream’s settings.

- Open the intended stream in Live Control Room.
- Compare its current stream URL and key with the encoder’s configured destination and key.
- If you need RTMPS, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL from the URL field; YouTube notes that the default display may show ordinary RTMP.
- If the encoder reports an SSL error, confirm the protocol and host are RTMPS. YouTube suggests trying port 443 in that specific SSL-error scenario; do not change ports as a general fix for unrelated drops.
- Do not reset a key without a reason. If you reset it, replace the saved key in the encoder before reconnecting.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP, for streaming to YouTube Live. See YouTube’s encoder guidance for protocol details.
Use the symptoms to separate network drops from encoding overload
In OBS, open View > Stats and watch dropped frames, rendering lag, and encoding lag while the issue occurs. Pair those statistics with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages. OBS distinguishes connection-to-ingest problems from computer performance problems in its guides to network dropped frames and encoding performance.

If OBS reports dropped frames or bitrate collapses
This points toward the connection to YouTube ingest: the route may be unstable, or the connection may not sustain the configured bitrate. OBS warns that enough dropped frames can disconnect a stream. Check stable upload capacity and the network path before increasing bitrate. OBS mentions using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when setting bitrate, not as a guarantee or YouTube requirement; leave room for variation and other traffic.
- Try a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi. A cable can help test whether wireless instability is involved, but it will not fix the wrong codec, key, or URL.
- Check whether a VPN, firewall or antivirus, network optimizer, network driver, router or modem, cable, or other network device is interfering.
- If the connection remains unstable after these checks, contact your ISP.
- OBS dynamic bitrate can lower the bitrate during congestion, but OBS says it does not resolve the underlying connection problem and may reduce picture quality.
If OBS reports “encoding overloaded” or render/encoding lag
This points toward system resources, not a weak upload connection. Resolution and frame rate affect workload. OBS recommends freeing GPU capacity, simplifying scenes, and reducing output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is not working, its performance guide suggests trying 30 fps. Check whether the new encoder, output size, frame rate, or scene complexity coincided with the overload before changing network settings.

Run a controlled test before the next event
- Write down the current output protocol, destination, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode and rate, keyframe interval, and audio codec.
- Change one meaningful variable at a time. Avoid simultaneously changing codec, bitrate, resolution, and network settings, which makes the cause harder to isolate.
- Start a test using representative audio and motion. Wait for the preview in Live Control Room and confirm the stream is receiving a picture and sound.
- Watch Live Control Room health messages alongside OBS statistics. Note whether the first symptom is a network drop, bitrate collapse, rendering lag, or encoding overload.
- Allow preparation time: YouTube’s live tips advise setting up encoders at least two hours before an event and starting them at least 15 minutes early. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
There is no universally best encoder established for every machine and network. Compare candidates on supported ingest format, the bitrate recommendation for the actual output, whether the connection can sustain that bitrate, available computer headroom, and correct URL/key configuration.
