YouTube RTMPS Ingest DNS Lookup Fails on a Cloud Server: How to Fix It

A YouTube ingest DNS error occurs before RTMPS connection and stream-key validation. Test the exact hostname from the encoder’s runtime, repair the resolver it actually uses, and then check port 443, TLS, and SNI if DNS succeeds.

If your cloud server reports “DNS lookup failed” while sending a YouTube live stream, first check whether the exact ingest hostname resolves from the same environment as your encoder. A DNS failure happens before a connection, TLS handshake, or stream-key check, so changing firewall rules or replacing the key is premature. If the hostname resolves, move on to RTMPS, port 443, TLS, and SNI.

Start with the exact YouTube ingest address

Copy the current RTMPS URL from the stream’s settings in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default; its Help page explains how to reveal and copy the RTMPS address. Check that your encoder has the complete URL in the fields it expects, without mixing up the server address, application path, and stream key. See YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming.

If your encoder gets stream details through the YouTube Live API, use the address in the liveStream resource’s cdn.ingestionInfo.rtmpsIngestionAddress. The corresponding backup field is rtmpsBackupIngestionAddress. Do not substitute an assumed hostname when the API provides the stream’s ingest address. See the YouTube Live Streaming API liveStreams reference and YouTube RTMPS ingestion guide.

Check DNS from the encoder’s runtime

Extract only the hostname from the ingest URL and test that name—not the full URL, application path, or stream key—through the machine’s normal resolver. If the encoder runs in a container, service namespace, or other isolated runtime, run the lookup there as well. A successful lookup on the host does not prove that the encoder’s runtime has the same DNS configuration.

Compare the ordinary resolver result with a query to a configured DNS server directly if your system has a suitable diagnostic tool. Use commands appropriate to the server’s distribution and resolver; there is no single command sequence that applies to every cloud image. Record the hostname tested and the result so you can tell whether a later change fixed resolution or merely changed a different layer.

If the hostname does not resolve

Find which resolver and network manager own DNS configuration before changing anything. On Linux, DNS may be set globally or per interface. Common arrangements include systemd-resolved, NetworkManager, and other network configuration services. A hand-edited resolver file can be overwritten or may not control the active interface.

  • Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
  1. Inspect active DNS state and interfaces. Check the DNS servers assigned to the active network interface and whether the server is considered online. On systems using systemd-resolved, inspect its current resolver and per-link state; its documentation describes distinct error categories, including missing suitable name servers, invalid replies, DNSSEC validation failures, and network-down conditions. See systemd-resolved and resolvectl documentation.
  2. Identify the configuration owner. If NetworkManager is active, determine whether it manages resolver configuration itself or passes DNS settings to systemd-resolved. Make any correction through that manager or the cloud image’s network configuration layer.
  3. Check resolver-file ownership. Inspect /etc/resolv.conf and whether it is a symlink before editing it. On some systems the file is managed by a service, and manual edits will not persist or affect the active resolver. See systemd-resolved configuration documentation.
  4. Retest from the encoder environment. After correcting the DNS server or interface configuration through its owner, repeat the hostname lookup from the same runtime that runs the encoder.

Do not make a hard-coded ingest IP address the default workaround. YouTube specifies hostname-based endpoints and requires the server hostname in TLS SNI. An IP can become stale and may break hostname-based certificate authentication.

If DNS works, move to RTMPS connectivity

A successful lookup means only that the name resolved; it does not prove that the server can connect or complete TLS. YouTube’s RTMPS requirements include a valid ingest endpoint, port 443, TLS, the correct application path, and SNI containing the ingest server hostname. The official RTMPS ingestion guide says to set the server name in the SSL handshake’s SNI extension to the hostname being contacted.

  • Confirm the URL uses rtmps://, not rtmp://.
  • Confirm the destination port is 443 and that the encoder is making a TLS connection.
  • Confirm the TLS SNI name is the ingest hostname, and the certificate is being checked against that name.
  • Confirm the encoder supports RTMPS and that the server URL and application path match the current Live Control Room settings or API response.

YouTube Help notes that cleartext RTMP sent to a server expecting RTMPS can time out, and that an invalid-certificate error can point to the wrong RTMP/RTMPS server or port. If the connection reaches the ingest service but YouTube rejects the stream, then check the stream key and application credentials; those are later-stage checks, not DNS remedies.

Diagnose by the first failing layer

Observed result What it establishes Next action
Hostname lookup fails in the encoder runtime The name-resolution stage has not succeeded. Inspect that runtime’s resolver settings, active interface, and DNS configuration owner.
Hostname resolves, but the connection times out DNS succeeded; reachability, protocol, port, or network policy may still be wrong. Verify the exact RTMPS endpoint, port 443, and network path.
Connection starts but TLS or certificate validation fails The issue is beyond basic DNS resolution. Check TLS support, certificate hostname, and SNI for the ingest server.
Ingest connects but the stream is rejected The endpoint was reached; credentials or stream configuration may be the next layer. Recheck the current stream key, application path, and YouTube stream settings.

Common mistakes that prolong the outage

  • Changing firewall rules before testing DNS: a firewall change cannot make an unresolvable hostname resolve.
  • Replacing the stream key after a lookup error: key validation occurs only after the encoder reaches the ingest endpoint.
  • Testing only on the host: a container or service may use separate DNS settings.
  • Editing /etc/resolv.conf without checking its owner: a resolver manager may replace the edit, or another configuration layer may supply the actual DNS servers.
  • Using an IP in place of YouTube’s hostname: this can become stale and conflicts with hostname-based TLS authentication.
  • Assuming YouTube is down or the cloud provider blocked DNS: the error alone does not establish either cause. Verify the actual hostname and resolver result first.

If this failure is part of maintaining a recurring prerecorded YouTube stream, StreamNeo is an alternative to operating your own streaming server. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from its cloud service, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera.
