How to Verify an Uploaded Video Archive on a VPS Before Streaming

A reliable VPS video check needs more than a successful upload: compare SHA-256 digests, inspect streams with ffprobe, and test the actual playback path.

Verify a video archive in three separate passes: compare SHA-256 checksums with the original files, use ffprobe to inspect each file’s container and streams, then test playback through the actual URL and client you plan to use. The first two checks catch different problems; neither proves that the VPS’s serving path works.

1. Compare each VPS file with its source using SHA-256

A matching digest establishes that the destination file is byte-for-byte identical to the particular source file you compared. It does not prove that the source itself is complete or playable. GNU Coreutils documents checksum generation and verification as a way to detect corruption and supports SHA-2 digests. See the GNU Coreutils 9.11 checksum documentation.

  1. On the machine holding the original archive, generate a SHA-256 digest for each video. With GNU Coreutils, run sha256sum -- path/to/video.mp4. Record the output alongside the source path and filename.

  2. After uploading, run the same command on the VPS against the corresponding destination file: sha256sum -- /path/to/video.mp4. Use the same algorithm and ensure the source and destination paths refer to the intended files.

    • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
    • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
    • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
    • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
    • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
  3. Compare the full digest strings. They must match exactly. For a batch, GNU Coreutils can check a saved digest file with sha256sum --check checksums.sha256; create and use the record with paths that resolve correctly in the directory where you run the check.

If a digest does not match

Do not mark that destination file as verified. First confirm that you compared the intended source and destination, including filenames and paths. If they correspond, re-upload the file or investigate the transfer and storage before proceeding, then calculate and compare the digests again.

2. Inspect the media with ffprobe

A checksum checks identity against a source; it does not explain what is inside a file. Use ffprobe to see whether FFmpeg can open the input and identify its container and streams. The FFprobe documentation describes stream and container inspection, structured output, error reporting, and version reporting. It also notes that ffprobe returns a positive exit code when an input cannot be opened or recognized as multimedia.

  1. Check that ffprobe is available and record the version with ffprobe -version.

  3. For a saved report or automated checks, request JSON output: ffprobe -v error -show_format -show_streams -of json /path/to/video.mp4. Save the output with the file’s path and the time of the check.

  4. Check the command’s exit status as well as its output. An input that cannot be opened or recognized is not a successful probe; inspect the error and verify the path and file before treating it as ready.

What a successful probe does—and does not—tell you

A successful probe means the tool could identify media structure; it does not certify that every part of the file decodes correctly, that the intended player supports its codecs, or that a web server or streaming application is configured correctly. Treat it as an inspection step, not an end-to-end playback test.

3. Test the real serving path and a client

Once the digest matches and the probe is useful, test the file through the same URL and delivery path that viewers or your streaming application will use. Open or play it from a client that represents the intended use. A local probe cannot establish that the URL is reachable, that permissions allow access, or that playback succeeds over the configured path.

These records make it possible to identify exactly which file and tool results you relied on when approving an archive for use.
