If YouTube Live says your audio format is unsupported over RTMP, inspect the audio FFmpeg is actually sending and encode it as AAC instead of copying an incompatible input codec. Set the sample rate and channel count for your intended output, then test the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. The exact command depends on your input, channel layout, FFmpeg build, and the rest of your publishing setup.
Why YouTube reports an unsupported audio format
RTMP and RTMPS have specific audio codec requirements. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 for audio, with an important limitation: 5.1 surround sound over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. A source file can play normally on your computer and still have an audio codec that is unsuitable for the outgoing live stream.
This commonly matters when a command copies audio unchanged with -c:a copy. Copying does not convert the source audio; it passes the existing codec through. If that codec is outside YouTube’s supported choices, encode the outgoing audio to a supported codec instead. The warning alone does not identify the failed stream’s input codec or prove that copying is the cause, so inspect the output and YouTube’s stream-health messages before settling on a fix.
Check the audio before changing the command
Inspect the source audio
Use FFprobe, which is distributed with FFmpeg, to inspect the input file:

ffprobe -v error -select_streams a:0 -show_entries stream=codec_name,sample_rate,channels,channel_layout -of default=noprint_wrappers=1 input.ext
Replace input.ext with your actual file. The output reports the first audio stream’s codec, sample rate, channel count, and channel layout when available. If there is no audio stream, or the layout is missing or unexpected, investigate that separately rather than assuming a codec conversion alone will resolve the problem.
Check what FFmpeg sends to YouTube
Review the complete command and identify the audio options attached to the RTMP output. If it uses -c:a copy, the source codec is not being changed. If it already encodes audio, confirm that the selected encoder is available in your installed FFmpeg build and that the resulting stream uses the intended channel layout and rate.

Encode audio as AAC for RTMP
FFmpeg provides output options for selecting the audio codec (-c:a), sample rate (-ar), and channel count (-ac). The following are option fragments, not complete publish commands. Place them with the options for the RTMP output in your existing command; the input, video settings, endpoint, stream key, and FFmpeg build determine the full command.
For a stereo stream
YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo audio. An example set of audio output options is:

-c:a aac -ar 44100 -ac 2 -b:a 128k
Use this only when stereo is the intended output. If your source is multichannel, explicitly downmixing to two channels may be necessary; a channel-count setting alone does not guarantee a good-sounding mix.
For a 5.1 surround stream
YouTube recommends AAC for 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS, at 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. A corresponding example fragment is:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
-c:a aac -ar 48000 -ac 6 -b:a 384k
Use it only when the source and output pipeline contain a valid 5.1 layout. Setting six channels does not create or correctly map surround audio from a stereo source. Confirm the channel layout and mapping in the encoded output.
YouTube’s codec guidance states: “Audio codec: AAC or MP3 (5.1 surround sound audio is only supported for AAC in RTMP/RTMPS)”. Its sample rates and bitrates above are recommendations, not measurements of how often this warning occurs.

Verify the encoded output and test in YouTube
- Update the audio options in your actual RTMP publishing command, replacing audio copying with AAC encoding when the inspection indicates that is appropriate.
- Check the outgoing stream’s parameters using FFprobe or FFmpeg’s output log. Confirm the audio codec is AAC and that sample rate, channel count, and layout match the stereo or 5.1 output you intend to send.
- Start a private or otherwise suitable test stream in YouTube Live Control Room before an event. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video like the planned stream.
- Watch the Control Room’s stream-health status and messages while the test runs. If the warning persists, investigate missing or malformed audio, a channel-layout or mapping problem, encoder availability, and the rest of the output command instead of repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
When HLS may be an alternative
If you need an audio codec that is not among RTMP/RTMPS’s supported choices, check whether YouTube’s HLS ingestion workflow fits your production setup. YouTube’s HLS guidance lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 audio. HLS is not a necessary detour when encoding to a supported RTMP codec fixes the issue; it also has higher latency because it sends video in segments and has its own transport and segment requirements.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded-video channel that needs to stay live on YouTube, StreamNeo is a different option from configuring and maintaining an FFmpeg publishing command. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
- Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card; there is one free day per account.
- Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
