If YouTube says your stream key is invalid, first copy the active key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and paste it into your encoder’s separate Stream Key field. Keep the server URL in the encoder’s Server or URL field. If the current key still fails, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in your encoder. Then check that the encoder’s protocol and server URL match the stream configuration.
Fix an invalid YouTube stream key in this order

Copy the active key from Live Control Room
In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then choose Stream. Under Stream key, copy the current key and paste it into your encoder. YouTube recommends retrieving a new key and updating the encoder when a third-party encoder reports a startup error. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide.

Put the key and server URL in the right fields
For a standard RTMP or RTMPS setup, the server URL belongs in the encoder’s Server or URL field; the key belongs in Stream Key. These are separate values. Don’t paste the key into the URL field or replace the server URL with the key. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes the two-field setup.

Reset the key if recopying does not work
In Live Control Room, reset the stream key, then immediately replace the saved value in your encoder with the newly generated one. A reset makes the previous key unusable wherever it was saved, so update every encoder profile or device that uses it. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot. Treat the key like a password: don’t publish or share it. If it may have been exposed, reset it and replace it anywhere it is stored. See YouTube’s guide to managing live stream settings.

Update the encoder and verify its own output
Install the latest available version of your encoder, then retry. Check that its preview looks and sounds as expected. If the encoder reports a healthy output but YouTube does not receive the stream, investigate the connection and protocol next rather than changing camera or microphone equipment.
Check that your protocol and server URL match
RTMP or RTMPS
Use the matching server URL shown in Live Control Room and confirm your encoder is configured for the same protocol. For RTMPS, the encoder must support RTMPS and use the RTMPS URL. YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting guide also identifies port 443 as a possible SSL troubleshooting step. Don’t switch protocols by changing only one field; the protocol, URL, and encoder settings need to agree.

HLS
HLS is a separate ingestion configuration, not a general-purpose workaround for an invalid RTMP key. Select or create a key configured for HLS and use the HLS HTTPS ingestion URL. In this setup, the key may already be included in the URL, so a separate stream-key field may not apply. Follow YouTube’s HLS setup guide for the corresponding configuration; don’t combine HLS settings with RTMP or RTMPS settings.
If the key looks right but YouTube still will not connect
- Encoder preview is wrong or missing: Check the encoder’s selected source and output before troubleshooting YouTube’s connection.
- Encoder output looks healthy, but YouTube receives nothing: Test whether your network permits outbound streaming traffic. YouTube recommends checking outbound internet when the encoder appears healthy but the stream does not reach YouTube.
- RTMPS connection times out or reports an SSL error: Recheck the RTMPS server URL and confirm encoder support. YouTube identifies port 443 as a possible SSL troubleshooting step.
- You do not have permission to reset the key: Ask a channel owner or manager to reset it. Editors and viewers cannot perform that action.
