If YouTube says your stream key is invalid after reconnecting, copy the current key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and replace the saved key in your encoder. A stale or mismatched key is a plausible cause, but YouTube does not say that reconnecting itself invalidates a key.
Replace the encoder’s saved stream key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then open Stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream key shown for the current settings.
- Open your encoder’s stream or destination settings and paste the current key into its stream-key field, replacing the saved value.
- Save the settings and try starting the encoder again.
YouTube describes stream keys as the “password and address” that tell an encoder where to send a feed and allow YouTube to accept it. Use the key currently shown in Live Control Room rather than relying on an older saved value. See YouTube’s instructions for managing live stream settings.
If replacing the key does not work
Reset the key only if needed
In Live Control Room’s Stream tab, find Stream key and select Reset next to the hidden key. Copy the newly generated key and replace the encoder’s saved value with it. Only a channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers do not have permission.
Check whether your encoder uses sign-in instead of a key
Some software connects by signing in to YouTube rather than using a manually entered stream key. If there is no stream-key field and the software reports a connection or authorization error, YouTube recommends contacting the encoder provider; the software may need an update. Check that you are using its latest version. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide covers encoder-start errors and software checks.

Tell an invalid key apart from a connection problem
Do not change network settings just because the encoder says the key is invalid. First confirm that the key in the encoder matches the current one in Live Control Room. If the encoder accepts the key but then reports an SSL error, timeout, or another connection failure, troubleshoot that separate issue:
- SSL or RTMPS error: Get the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and use an encoder that supports RTMPS. For an SSL error, YouTube suggests specifying port 443.
- Connection timeout: Check that the server URL is correct and that the encoder supports the protocol you selected.
- Encoder output or outbound connection problem: Check the encoder’s diagnostics and local audio/video output, including CPU load. Test the internet connection if the outbound connection appears unhealthy; contact your internet provider if the test indicates a problem.
These checks address protocol, encoder, or network trouble—not an incorrect stream-key credential. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting guidance.
