An increasing OBS Dropped Frames (Network) counter means encoded video is not reaching the selected ingest server reliably, or the connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate. It does not, by itself, prove that evening network congestion in India is the cause. First compare OBS counters, YouTube stream health, and sustained upload performance during the affected hours; then adjust bitrate or investigate the VPS-to-ingest route.
What the dropped-frames counter does—and does not—tell you
OBS distinguishes network-dropped frames from rendering or encoding lag. Network drops point to delivery between the streaming client and remote ingest server; rendering or encoding problems indicate a different bottleneck. Check the specific counter rather than treating every frame problem as a network fault. The OBS connection troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, describes dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as a network issue between the computer and remote ingest server.
That diagnosis identifies the part of the stream path to investigate, not the reason it is failing. A counter rising in the evening is not proof that the VPS provider, an Indian ISP, or YouTube is congested. The route, region, time-correlated capacity, and ingest conditions need to be measured before assigning cause.
Collect evidence during both affected and unaffected periods
Record OBS output and timestamps
While streaming, note the exact time and whether the network dropped-frame counter rises. Record output bitrate and the render-lag and encoding-lag counters as well. Keep OBS logs for the same sessions. Comparing a problematic evening with a stable period helps distinguish a recurring time-linked pattern from an isolated event.

Check YouTube stream health at matching times
In YouTube Live Control Room, review stream-health warnings and match them to the OBS timestamps. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation identifies health or configuration issue categories including bitrate, frame rate, codec, keyframe frequency, audio, and video. A warning that YouTube is not receiving enough video for smooth streaming is useful evidence, but it does not alone establish evening congestion or identify which part of the route is responsible.
Test sustained upload capacity, not just a quick result
YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and running a representative preflight stream with similar motion and audio. Run the test from the VPS, monitor stream health, and include the evening window in which the problem occurs. A single brief speed-test result cannot establish that the VPS-to-ingest connection remains stable for the duration of a stream.

Use YouTube’s encoder settings and live-streaming guidance to check the configured stream against recommendations for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you use. The appropriate bitrate depends on those settings; do not infer a guaranteed rate from a general speed test.
Adjust bitrate only when the evidence supports it
If measurements indicate the connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate, lower the target bitrate and repeat a representative test. That may improve delivery stability, with a corresponding reduction in video quality. Change one setting at a time and compare OBS counters and YouTube stream health under similar conditions.

OBS also offers dynamic bitrate, which can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. Treat it as a mitigation, not a diagnosis or a cure: OBS warns that it does not solve the underlying connection issue and should be used only when the connection problem cannot be resolved. When and how to investigate the VPS route
If drops continue after checking the bitrate and encoder configuration, compare repeated measurements from affected and unaffected hours. Where practical, compare routes or ingest destinations while holding the stream settings constant. Useful evidence includes sustained upload capacity during the evening window, route stability such as packet loss or jitter, and YouTube health during a representative test. The official guidance supports investigating the client-to-ingest connection; it does not identify a particular Indian VPS provider or prescribe a specific ingest endpoint.

Keep the VPS region and provider, test times, OBS logs, health messages, and measurement results together. That gives you a concrete basis for asking the host about capacity or routing. Without those measurements, a provider-specific congestion claim is not established.

- Network dropped frames rise, but render and encoding lag do not: focus on sustained delivery between the VPS and ingest; compare bitrate demand, upload tests, timestamps, and stream-health messages.
- Rendering or encoding lag rises instead: do not treat it as proof of network congestion. Investigate the corresponding OBS rendering or encoding workload separately.
- YouTube reports a configuration or health issue: check the indicated setting—such as bitrate, frame rate, codec, keyframe frequency, audio, or video—and test again. The warning is a diagnostic signal, not proof of a particular network cause.
- Drops coincide with evening hours: repeat the same measurements at other times and across more than one affected session. A time pattern alone does not identify the congested network segment.
- A local cable or adapter seems like an obvious fix: this stream originates on a VPS, so a local physical connection is not established as the relevant link. Diagnose the VPS-to-ingest path unless evidence points elsewhere.
