YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies CBR for RTMP/RTMPS. Then check that your bitrate matches your codec, resolution, and frame rate—and that your internet connection can sustain it with upload headroom. If viewers still see buffering while OBS remains stable, investigate playback latency separately: the two symptoms do not prove the same cause.
Why is my YouTube stream buffering after I changed OBS from CBR to VBR?
“Buffering” can describe two different problems:
- OBS is dropping frames or disconnecting while sending the stream. This points to the connection between your computer and YouTube’s ingest server, or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain.
- Viewers see playback pause or buffer after YouTube receives the stream. This can involve playback conditions, including YouTube’s latency setting; it does not by itself show that VBR caused the problem.
Because YouTube’s current live encoder instructions specify CBR for RTMP/RTMPS, revert OBS’s streaming Rate Control to CBR. YouTube’s separate recommendation of VBR for uploaded video files is for a different workflow, not a live-stream setting. YouTube’s live encoder settings identify CBR for RTMP/RTMPS.
Should OBS use CBR or VBR for YouTube live streaming?
For a YouTube live stream sent over RTMP/RTMPS, use CBR as specified in YouTube’s live encoder guidance. VBR advice for uploading a finished video should not be carried over to OBS’s live output settings.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
In OBS, open Settings > Output and select the Streaming section. Set Rate Control to CBR, then confirm the bitrate. OBS labels and layout can vary with version and output mode, so make sure you are changing the streaming encoder rather than recording settings.
Set a bitrate that fits your stream and connection
YouTube’s recommended live bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The values below are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that your connection can sustain them. These H.264 examples come from YouTube’s current guidance, accessed in 2026:

| Codec | Resolution and frame rate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
Choose the YouTube table row for your actual codec, ingest resolution, and frame rate. If you use AV1 or H.265, consult the matching codec row in YouTube’s live encoder settings rather than assuming the H.264 values apply. Set that bitrate in OBS’s streaming output, then check whether your sustained upload capacity can support it.
How to fix dropped frames in OBS when streaming to YouTube
- Restore CBR. In OBS, open Settings > Output > Streaming, set Rate Control to CBR, and verify the bitrate.
- Match YouTube’s recommended bitrate. Use the row for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. Do not choose a bitrate solely because it worked for a different stream configuration.
- Check sustained upload capacity. Test upload rather than download speed. YouTube recommends roughly 20% upload bandwidth beyond the stream bitrate. Leave additional capacity for other devices, network traffic, and any backup stream; a speed-test result alone cannot guarantee a stable live connection. See YouTube’s live encoder guidance and YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Watch OBS’s network indicators. If the dropped-frame counter rises or OBS disconnects, reduce the bitrate and reassess. OBS explains: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” That points to a connection or capacity problem; it does not prove VBR alone caused it. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide also lists VPNs, security software, network-prioritization software, outdated drivers, Wi-Fi, and router or modem issues as possible causes.
- If you use Wi-Fi, test Ethernet if practical. OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable and recommends a wired connection. Ethernet is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed cure; if the problem remains, continue checking the other possible causes.
- Monitor YouTube stream health. Compare its warnings with OBS’s connection state so you can tell whether the issue appears on the way to YouTube or after ingest.
- Test before an important stream. Use similar motion and audio to the planned broadcast, and watch OBS and YouTube’s stream health while it runs.
If OBS is stable but viewers still see playback buffering
When OBS shows a stable connection and YouTube’s stream health does not indicate an ingest problem, do not assume that changing from CBR to VBR caused viewer buffering. Check the stream’s latency mode: YouTube notes that lower latency may increase playback buffering. YouTube’s live-stream latency guidance explains this trade-off.

Gather useful details before changing encoder settings again: which viewers are affected, their devices, and the playback qualities they are watching. If some viewers buffer while others do not, that is useful diagnostic information, not proof of a particular cause. Check whether the broadcaster’s preview also buffers, and compare the reports with OBS’s dropped frames, connection state, and YouTube’s stream health.
Common causes and what to check
| What you observe | What it suggests | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| OBS dropped frames rise or it disconnects | The computer-to-ingest connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. | Restore CBR, check the bitrate and upload headroom, then reduce bitrate if needed. Check Wi-Fi, VPN, security or network-prioritization software, drivers, and router or modem issues. |
| OBS remains connected, but YouTube stream health reports trouble | The ingest path or stream configuration needs closer inspection. | Compare the YouTube health messages with the chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate; test again before the event. |
| OBS and YouTube ingest indicators look stable, but viewers report buffering | Playback conditions or latency may be involved; the encoder rate control is not established as the cause. | Check latency mode and collect viewer, device, and playback-quality details. |
| Only Wi-Fi sessions appear unstable | Wireless conditions may be contributing. | Test with Ethernet if practical, then compare OBS’s network indicators. |
