YouTube Stream Health Warning During a 1080p60 Loop: Encoder Bitrate Checks

A 1080p60 health warning can come from mismatched ingest settings or an unstable connection. Check the exact YouTube error, codec bitrate, CBR, keyframes, and encoder stats.

A YouTube stream-health warning during a 1080p60 loop does not automatically mean the bitrate is wrong: first read the exact Live Control Room error, then check the selected ingest settings, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and connection. YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p60 H.264 or 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265, with CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Those are encoder recommendations, not proof that your upload connection can sustain the stream.

What a 1080p60 bitrate warning means

YouTube’s recommended live-ingest bitrate for 1080p60 depends on the codec you send. Its guidance lists 17 Mbps for H.264 and 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265. The listed minimums are 6 Mbps for H.264 and 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265. These are live-stream encoder figures, not YouTube’s separate recommendations for uploading a video file. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the current table.

Codec sent to YouTube 1080p60 recommended bitrate 1080p60 listed minimum
H.264 17 Mbps 6 Mbps
AV1 or H.265 12 Mbps 4 Mbps

A bitrate below the recommendation is not automatically the cause of every health warning, and a bitrate above the minimum is not a guarantee of stable delivery. YouTube may flag a mismatch between the bitrate and the selected ingest configuration; dropped frames, by contrast, can indicate that the network connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate.

Read the exact Live Control Room error first

Open the live stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and read the message beside the Health Indicator. YouTube’s live streaming error-message guidance distinguishes issues such as incorrect bitrate, video settings, keyframe frequency, and resolution or video size. The wording identifies which branch to check; “stream health warning” on its own is not a diagnosis.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Red: YouTube classifies red errors as critical; they may prevent an event from starting or cause problems for viewers.
  • Yellow: Yellow errors are moderate and may reduce stream quality.

The message remains visible while the error is unresolved, and a timestamp shows when YouTube observed it. Note the exact text, severity, and timestamp before changing settings. That makes it easier to tell whether a correction addressed the warning or whether a second issue remains.

Check the encoder settings in this order

  1. Match the selected ingest configuration. In YouTube Studio, inspect the stream’s ingestion settings and compare them with the encoder’s actual output. YouTube’s incorrect-bitrate error guidance says that, unless you are using a variable-resolution entry point, the exact bitrate for the selected resolution on the Ingestion Settings page is required. Do not assume that entering a generally recommended number overrides a different selected ingest requirement.
  2. Confirm output resolution and frame rate. Check both the encoder’s outgoing resolution and frame rate and the configuration selected for the YouTube stream. YouTube reports video-settings and video-size errors separately, so a bitrate change will not fix a mismatch in resolution or frame rate.
  3. Identify the actual codec, then compare bitrate. For a 1080p60 feed, use the H.264 or AV1/H.265 row above as the relevant recommendation. Confirm that the encoder is really sending that codec; a setting chosen for one codec should not be applied as if it were the other.
  4. Set bitrate mode to CBR. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for live encoding. A variable bitrate mode can make the transmitted bitrate differ from the configured target.
  5. Set keyframes to two seconds apart. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. If you change the frame rate, recheck the encoder’s keyframe cadence as well; frame rate and keyframe timing are related.
  6. Retest with representative content. Test with audio and movement similar to the planned loop, rather than relying on a static setup screen. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event.

YouTube normally detects resolution and frame rate automatically; manual selection is available with a custom stream key. Its incoming stream is also transcoded into multiple viewing formats, but that viewer-side processing does not correct an incorrectly configured or unstable feed sent to YouTube. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance for stream configuration details.

Separate encoder configuration errors from dropped frames

A YouTube incorrect-bitrate warning points first to the outgoing bitrate and the selected ingest settings. Network dropped frames are a different symptom: OBS describes them as a connection to the remote ingest server that is unstable or unable to keep up with the configured bitrate. Its stream connection troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30, recommends trying a wired connection as one way to troubleshoot.

A wired test is a comparison, not proof that Wi-Fi caused the problem. If it improves stability, investigate the wireless link or local network; if not, other network causes may need investigation. A cable will not fix a codec, bitrate, resolution, or keyframe mismatch.

Test a loop before leaving it live

A brief preview can confirm that the stream starts, but it cannot establish that a long loop will remain healthy. Test the actual content and audio, then observe both YouTube’s Health Indicator and the encoder’s own statistics while it runs. YouTube recommends checking upload capacity, testing before the event with representative audio and movement, and monitoring health during the stream.

  • Run an upload-speed test on the same connection and at the location that will carry the stream.
  • Compare available upload capacity with the configured stream bitrate and leave room for normal network variation and other traffic.
  • Watch for the specific YouTube error and the encoder’s network or dropped-frame counters; do not treat either dashboard as a substitute for the other.
  • If the connection cannot reliably carry the chosen quality, lower the selected resolution or frame rate, then repeat the test rather than assuming the 1080p60 configuration is sustainable.

Common symptoms and fixes

Symptom What to check Next step
YouTube says the bitrate is incorrect Selected ingest configuration, actual codec, and encoder bitrate Match the exact bitrate required for the selected resolution and configuration; consult YouTube’s live encoder table for codec-specific recommendations.
YouTube reports incorrect video settings or video size Encoder output resolution and frame rate versus the stream configuration Align the output with the selected ingest settings before changing bitrate.
YouTube reports a keyframe-frequency error Keyframe interval and current frame rate Use YouTube’s recommended two-second interval, not more than four seconds, and recheck it after frame-rate changes.
The encoder reports network dropped frames Upload capacity, connection stability, and whether other traffic is using the link Run an upload test, compare wired and wireless conditions, and reduce stream quality if the connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate.
The warning returns after a setting change Whether the encoder is actually sending the new output settings and whether YouTube still shows the earlier error timestamp Check the live output and current Health Indicator message again; correct any remaining mismatch and retest.
