Profiles store stream settings, while a portable installation reads configuration from its own application folder. If the key is still present after restarting OBS but the stream will not connect, troubleshoot the server URL and connection protocol instead of repeatedly pasting the key.
First identify what is going wrong
There are two different problems that can look like a forgotten key:
- The key or destination is missing after you reopen OBS: check the active Profile and which OBS installation is launching.
- The key is still there, but OBS will not connect: verify the server URL, key validity and RTMPS support.
YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The server URL and key are separate details: the URL tells the encoder where to send the feed, and the key identifies or authorizes the stream.
Check the active OBS Profile
OBS Profiles save streaming configuration, including the connected account, along with Video and Output settings. A different Profile can therefore show different YouTube settings without the key having been erased.

- In OBS, open the Profile menu.
- Select the Profile in which you configured YouTube streaming.
- Open Settings > Stream and check the service, server and key fields.
- If the correct Profile contains the setup, export the Profile as a JSON backup if you need to preserve or transfer those settings.
Profiles do not store scenes; OBS uses Scene Collections for those. Changing a Scene Collection is not the same as selecting the Profile that holds your stream settings. OBS Profiles documentation.
Confirm OBS is launching the same installation
This check matters especially if you use Portable Mode on Windows. Portable Mode reads its configuration from the OBS application folder. If a shortcut opens a different installation or portable folder, OBS may show different settings.

- Check the shortcut or launcher you use and confirm it points to the same OBS copy each time.
- If you use Portable Mode, confirm that you are opening the same portable folder where you configured the stream.
- If you install or move a portable copy, use a user folder. OBS recommends not placing the Windows ZIP version in Program Files.
Portable Mode does not, by itself, mean OBS cannot save settings. The useful diagnostic is whether each launch opens the same copy and configuration location. OBS instructions for running in Portable Mode.
Re-enter and verify the YouTube stream details
When the correct Profile and OBS copy are active, retrieve the current stream details from YouTube and check both fields in OBS. YouTube’s interface labels may change, but the documented route is through YouTube Studio’s live-stream setup.

- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then open the Stream tab.
- Copy the current stream key shown for the stream setup.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose the YouTube service or preset when available.
- Check that the server/URL and stream key are both set correctly. Do not treat the key as a replacement for the server URL.
- Apply the settings, close and reopen OBS, then revisit Settings > Stream to confirm the details remain in the intended Profile.
OBS distinguishes a missing server URL from a missing key in its setup interface, so verify both rather than assuming any connection error means the key was not saved. See YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder and OBS Studio interface strings.
Reset the key only if you need a fresh one
If the key is missing, rejected or potentially compromised, retrieve or reset it in YouTube Live Control Room, then replace it in OBS. Only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key; editors and viewers cannot. Resetting invalidates the old key for the encoder setup, so copy the new value into the correct OBS Profile before trying to connect.

Do not reset a key merely because OBS will not connect if the key is still present. First distinguish a credential problem from a server or protocol problem. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.

Once the key remains visible after an OBS restart, repeated pasting is unlikely to address the cause. Check the server URL and protocol, then test the setup before the actual stream.

- Check the server URL: compare it with the URL in YouTube Live Control Room. A wrong address can cause a connection timeout.
- Use RTMPS where appropriate: choose a YouTube RTMPS preset in OBS if available, or copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room. The encoder must support RTMPS.
- For an SSL error: verify that the server address and scheme are correct. YouTube also suggests trying port 443.
- Test and monitor: start a test stream before the event and watch YouTube’s stream health indicators.
