YU-NO is a visual novel and adventure game about Takuya Arima’s investigation into his father’s disappearance. What did Nintendo Life think of the Switch remake?
Sayem Ahmed’s Nintendo Life review, published October 3, 2019, is a North American Nintendo Switch review. It praises the game’s atmosphere, ambitious nonlinear narrative, branching timelines, and the Reflector Device’s role in revisiting events. Ahmed also presents the work as historically important to the visual-novel genre.

The reviewer’s reservations focus on execution and content: lengthy text and observation sequences, dating-sim elements judged dated, a protagonist Ahmed finds frustrating and sexually immature, and redesigned character art that, in the critic’s view, loses some of the original’s atmosphere. These are one reviewer’s assessments, not objective properties every player will weigh the same way.
There is an inconsistency in the score display: the page header shows 7.4, while the conclusion calls the review “Average 5/10.” Because those figures conflict on the same review page, neither should be treated as an unambiguous summary score. What divides reviewers?
Branching storytelling and influence
The strongest positive case is the structure itself: parallel routes and the ability to revisit events give the narrative an investigative, interconnected quality. Reviewers who value intricate plotting and visual-novel history may find that ambition compelling even when individual story choices do not work for them.
Presentation and pacing
Some criticism concerns the remake’s delivery rather than its underlying premise. Nintendo Life’s reviewer found the text and observation passages lengthy and felt that the redesigned art did not preserve all of the original’s atmosphere. Such judgments can matter especially to players approaching the game for its pacing or presentation.

Sexualized material
Fan service, sexual dialogue, and the game’s treatment of its protagonist are recurring points of concern in the cited reviews. The ESRB rates the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch versions Mature 17+ for blood, partial nudity, sexual content, strong language, and violence. The ESRB entry gives the rating details; players sensitive to sexualized content should factor that into their decision.

Platform, region, and rating source matter when comparing coverage. Nintendo Life’s examined review is specifically for the North American Nintendo Switch release. The publisher lists Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam; it gives a North American release date of October 1, 2019, and a European digital release date of October 4, 2019. For the PC version, Steam showed 78% positive among 377 user reviews when accessed in 2026. That is a changing user-review snapshot, not a critic score or a stable measure of opinion. Likewise, the 64 shown by GameFAQs is its display of a Metacritic aggregation based on five critics, not a user rating. Keep critic reviews, aggregated critic scores, and player ratings separate when deciding how much weight to give each.
Is YU-NO worth playing?
The critical case for the remake is its ambitious route design and nonlinear storytelling; the case against it is that the presentation and sexualized elements may feel dated or distracting. It is most likely to appeal to readers who enjoy complex visual novels and are comfortable with that material. If those elements are a deal-breaker, the critical praise for its structure may not outweigh them.
