The best base Deviations in Once Human are the ones that remove your current bottleneck: Electric Eel for generator capacity, The Digby Boy for ore, Flame Essence for furnace throughput, and different picks for farming, cooking, defense, or Deviation recovery. There is no single universally optimal roster. The recommendations below are guide-reported roles, not results from a controlled comparison, and availability can vary with scenario and updates.
How to choose a base Deviation
Guides distinguish Combat, Territory, and Crafting Deviations. For a base roster, focus on Territory Deviations: their value comes from the work they perform around your territory rather than from combat alone. The Once Human Database’s March 2026 guide and the Once Human Wiki’s Sept. 6, 2026 guide provide the recommendations here; neither establishes a universal ranking.

Choose based on four practical questions:
- What job is not getting done? Identify whether you need power, ore, smelting, crops, cooking, defense, or faster recovery.
- Can you obtain it at your current stage? Some options are framed as early-game helpers; Rebecca is a late-game target.
- Does the benefit match your routine? A cooking specialist matters more if you regularly prepare food buffs; a defense pick matters most when purification waves are a concern.
- Could scenario or update rules affect it? Check the live game for current acquisition and system details.
10 best base Deviations by role
This is a role-based shortlist, not a claim that every base needs all ten. Use the first option that addresses a real constraint in your own territory.
Recommended Free Tools
1. Electric Eel — generator capacity
Choose Electric Eel when your generators’ power limit is constraining the base. The March 2026 Once Human Database guide describes it as raising generator power limit. That makes it a targeted infrastructure pick, not a general-purpose upgrade for every player.
#1 Best Overall
2. The Digby Boy — ore gathering
The Digby Boy mines ore and is positioned by the same guide as an early-game resource helper. It is most relevant while ore collection is a bottleneck; the available guide material does not establish that it remains the best choice after every progression unlock.
3. Flame Essence — furnace throughput
Flame Essence is the smelting pick if your furnaces are holding up production. The March 2026 guide reports a 25–30% increase in furnace production speed. Treat that range as the guide’s claim, not an independently verified or guaranteed in-game result.
Rank #2
4. Growshroom — planting and crop growth
Growshroom is presented as a farming option associated with planting and crop growth. It suits players who want help with that part of their crop workflow; it is not interchangeable with the watering or mutation-focused options below.
5. Rain Man — watering and crop vitality
Rain Man is described as helping with watering and crop vitality. Consider it when those are the farm tasks you want supported, rather than selecting it simply because you are growing crops.
Rank #3
6. Buzzy Bee — crop mutation chance
Buzzy Bee is the crop-focused choice when mutation chance is the goal. The guide identifies a different farming function for each of these three Deviations, so the right pick depends on the result you want from your farm.
7. Chefosaurus Rex — cooking
Chefosaurus Rex is described as improving cooking proficiency. It is a better fit for players who routinely invest in food buffs than for a base where cooking is incidental.
8. Nutcracker — territory defense
Nutcracker is described as patrolling and attacking during purification waves. That makes it a situational defense pick: prioritize it when protection during those events is a concern, rather than treating it as essential production support.

Rebecca is presented as support that increases the energy recovery speed of other Deviations. The March 2026 guide links her acquisition to the LEA Research Lab, making her a late-game goal rather than a requirement for an early base roster.

10. A second specialist for your current bottleneck
The cited guides do not identify a distinct tenth base Deviation with a separate, verified role beyond the options above. Rather than inventing one, use this slot for another specialist that addresses a demonstrated need in your territory. The Once Human Database’s searchable catalog can help you review the wider Deviation list: Once Human Database: Deviations. Verify any candidate’s function and availability in the live game before committing to it.

Build around your base, not a fixed top-ten roster
Start with the task currently slowing you down, then add specialists only when their function matches how you play. A farm can call for different support depending on whether planting, watering, vitality, or mutation is the priority. Likewise, defense and cooking picks are valuable in the situations where those systems matter, not as automatic upgrades to every territory.
Availability and update caveats
The recommendations are from third-party guides rather than official patch documentation. The Once Human Wiki guide, last updated Sept. 6, 2026, reports Deviation Fusion rolling out across scenarios after a September 24, 2026 update. A Once Human TH.gl locations guide was updated Oct. 5, 2026. These reports are cues that systems and location information can change; confirm the current scenario, patch, and acquisition details in game.
