The best Digimon game depends on the kind of play you want: Digimon Story: Time Stranger is the strongest modern pick for monster collecting and battling, while Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition offers a classic turn-based party-building loop and Digimon Survive is for story-first players. This ranking follows GamesRadar+’s list published March 6, 2026; it is one outlet’s editorial judgment, not a franchise-wide consensus. The games differ sharply in genre, pace, and platform, so the right first game may not be the one at number one.
How this ranking works
Digimon games are not all variations on the same monster-collecting RPG. This list includes traditional turn-based adventures, partner-raising games, a visual novel with tactical battles, and a card-battling spin-off. The order follows GamesRadar+’s March 6, 2026 ranking, with each entry explained by its play loop and the reader it is most likely to suit. Publisher product pages are used for mechanics and platform details, not as proof of an objective quality ranking.

2. Digimon World
Best for: a distinctive classic built around caring for one partner.
Instead of managing a conventional party, you explore with a partner Digimon and care for it as it grows. That makes the game feel more like a raising-and-adventure loop than a standard turn-based RPG. Its age and less transparent partner-raising systems can make it demanding for newcomers, but they are also central to what sets it apart.
3. Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth – Hacker’s Memory
Best for: players who want another story in Cyber Sleuth’s digital setting.

4. Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth
Best for: a traditional turn-based Digimon party-building RPG.
Cyber Sleuth is a strong entry point if you want to recruit Digimon, build a team, and fight through classic turn-based battles. The Complete Edition combines Cyber Sleuth and Hacker’s Memory in one product. Bandai Namco says it includes more than 300 Digimon to collect, raise, and Digivolve, and lists the edition for Nintendo Switch and Steam on its official product page.
5. Digimon Survive
Best for: a dramatic, story-led experience with tactical battles.

6. Digimon World Dawn & Dusk

Dawn and Dusk offer deeper raising systems and version-specific roster differences, according to GamesRadar+. They are legacy Nintendo DS releases, so check which version and platform you are buying; availability may depend on existing copies and platform-specific options.
7. Digimon World DS
Best for: handheld-era collecting and raising.
This Nintendo DS RPG is another option for players curious about older Digimon collecting and raising systems. Its original platform and age matter when choosing how to play it: verify that a listing is for the edition and hardware you want before buying.
8. Digimon World 3
Best for: a more conventional party-battling RPG with exploration.
Rank #4
- RICH VISUAL NOVEL EXPERIENCE - Unfold a dark tale about friendship and survival that is jam-packed with exciting drama, a unique cast of characters, and potentially grim choices
- A MYSTERIOUS WORLD - Explore otherworldly areas filled with hidden secrets and Digimon to recruit
- THE POWER IS YOURS - Your choices affect gameplay - your bond with other NPCs, your Digimon's evolution, and the outcome of your adventure
- THRILLING & STRATEGIC GAMEPLAY - Persuade your opponents to join your team and evolve them to fight alongside you in thrilling turn-based battles
Originally released on PlayStation, Digimon World 3 leans toward party battles and exploration. In Europe, it is known as Digimon World 2003. That regional naming difference is worth checking when searching for a copy or identifying a listing.
9. Digimon: Digital Card Battle
Best for: card strategy instead of raising a creature team.
This PlayStation-era game focuses on solo card battles, making it the clearest choice here for players who prefer deck strategy and collectible-card flavor to a creature-raising RPG loop. It is a legacy release, so access depends on platform-specific availability or finding a suitable copy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors10. Digimon World: Next Order
Best for: slow-burn partner raising, training, and routines.
Best Value
- THE POWER IS YOURS - Your choices affect gameplay - your bond with other NPCs, your Digimon's evolution, and the outcome of your adventure
- A MYSTERIOUS WORLD - Explore otherworldly areas filled with hidden secrets and Digimon to recruit
- Perfect gift for friends and family
Next Order centers on caring for partners: training, routines, and player support influence growth and evolution. Its partners battle with AI control, so it is a weaker fit if you want to direct every move tactically. Choose it for the raising loop and the satisfaction of watching partners develop, not for the direct party control of Cyber Sleuth.

Choose by the experience you want rather than by ranking position alone:
| If you want… | Start with… | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| A modern monster-collecting RPG | Digimon Story: Time Stranger | A current Story-series training RPG centered on collecting, raising, and battling. |
| Traditional turn-based party-building | Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition | Two campaigns, classic turn-based battles, and more than 300 Digimon according to Bandai Namco. |
| A story-first game | Digimon Survive | A visual novel and tactical RPG hybrid. |
| Partner raising and routines | Digimon World: Next Order | Training and player support shape partner growth and evolution. |
| Retro exploration or card play | Digimon World, Digimon World 3, or Digital Card Battle | Older PlayStation entries offer distinct partner-raising, party-battling, and card-game loops. |
For a first game that feels familiar to fans of turn-based creature RPGs, start with Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition. If you specifically want the newest release, pick Time Stranger. If the story matters more than collecting, Survive is the better match.
