These ten are useful options for different kinds of runs, not a definitive ranking. Each Thought has a research phase and a completed effect, so check both before committing cabinet space.
What the Thought Cabinet does
The Thought Cabinet lets you research ideas your character encounters. A Thought may affect skills, dialogue, character identity, or story events, and its research effect can differ from its effect after completion. ZA/UM described it as an “inventory for thoughts” and said the game contains 53 Thoughts, while a typical character discovers and internalizes an average of 16 in one playthrough. Those figures describe the system, not a recommended build. ZA/UM’s 2019 overview also notes that some Thoughts open major story material.

Because you cannot pursue every idea in one run, weigh a Thought’s completed bonuses and penalties against its temporary research effect, duration, unlock conditions, and narrative appeal. A temporary penalty may matter if you are about to make a difficult check; a completed bonus may be more valuable if it supports the skills you rely on throughout the run.

The available reference material does not establish a verified set of ten effects and unlock routes to support a reliable, build-by-build recommendation list. Rather than guess at individual bonuses, penalties, or names, use the selection framework below to choose from the Thoughts your character has actually unlocked.

For a skill-focused build
- Compare the completed skill bonuses and penalties with the skills you use for important checks. A bonus to an irrelevant skill may be less useful than a smaller benefit that supports your build.
- Check whether the Thought’s research phase temporarily changes a skill you need soon. If it does, consider delaying research until after an imminent check.
For a role-play-focused run
- Consider whether the Thought supports the character identity you want to develop, even if its raw skill effects are mixed.
- Look for dialogue options or story consequences, not only numerical bonuses. Some Thoughts are valuable because of the material or interactions they make available.
For a run with limited time or cabinet space
- Check the research duration and whether you can afford to spend that much in-game time before pursuing the next objective.
- Compare the choice with the other Thoughts available to you. The Thought Cabinet reference describes a maximum of 12 internalized at once; verify the current in-game cabinet before planning around that limit.
- Confirm the unlock route before making a plan: availability depends on what you have encountered, and a guide’s conditions may not match every point in your run.
How to choose which Thoughts to internalize
- Start with your goal. Decide whether you want to improve a particular skill profile, pursue a role-play direction, or access more dialogue and story material.
- Read both effects. Separate the temporary research effect from the completed effect; do not judge a Thought by one phase alone.
- Account for timing. Compare research duration and any temporary penalty with the checks and objectives immediately ahead.
- Check availability and opportunity cost. Make sure the Thought is unlocked, then decide whether its benefits justify using time and a cabinet slot instead of another available option.
