10 Best Exploration Games, Ranked by What Makes Discovery Rewarding

The best exploration games make you curious about what lies beyond the next ridge, door, or planet—and reward you for finding out. This ranking weighs how central discovery is, what it reveals, how freely you can navigate, and how much combat or survival friction gets in the way. It is an editorial ranking, not a universal consensus: a compact mystery and a sprawling sandbox offer very different kinds of exploration.

How this ranking works

Each game is ranked by five considerations: whether discovery drives the core loop; whether it uncovers meaningful secrets, story, or environments; freedom of movement and navigation; whether discoveries are authored, systemic, or procedural; and the friction added by combat, survival, or other systems. Map size alone does not make a game rewarding to explore.

That distinction matters because recommendation lists use different scopes. PC Gamer’s open-world guide emphasizes organic discovery and broad sandbox play, while Space.com’s space-game guide says it is not ranked and instead highlights games by niche strengths. Neither establishes a definitive top ten.

The 10 best exploration games

  1. Outer Wilds

Best for: Players who want exploration to solve a mystery.

    #1 Best Overall
    Sale
LEGO Horizon Adventures - Nintendo Switch
    • Explore the much-loved world of Horizon and come face-to-face with the game’s awe-inspiring machines – all faithfully recreated in LEGO bricks.
    • Experience thrilling online and couch co-op action with friends and family (Online play may require a paid online subscription).
    • Enjoy an exciting mix of action, exploration, customization, and laugh-out-loud LEGO humour.
    • Engage in explosive combat with spectacular weapons, power-ups, and gadgets.
    • Soak up stunning cinematic visuals, built with life-like LEGO bricks.

Nintendo describes Outer Wilds as “an open world mystery about a solar system trapped in an endless time loop.” Its compact solar system is a web of clues: visiting places, noticing changes, and connecting discoveries are how you learn what is happening. The time-loop structure makes knowledge—not a growing inventory of upgrades—the key reward. You can explore in a range of directions, but curiosity and observation matter more than combat or survival management.

Nintendo’s store listing also notes that it won Best Game at the 2020 BAFTA Games Awards and was named Game of the Year for 2019 by Giant Bomb, Polygon, Eurogamer, and The Guardian. That recognition is useful context, not proof of a universal ranking. See Nintendo’s Outer Wilds listing.

  2. Elden Ring

Best for: Players who like finding their own way through a dangerous fantasy world.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Elden Ring makes wandering feel consequential. An unexpected route can lead to a hidden dungeon, a striking landmark, a new region, or a difficult fight. Its world is authored rather than procedurally generated, but it often leaves players to notice paths and points of interest instead of spelling out every objective. PC Gamer highlights this organic approach, including the lack of a conventional quest log, map markers, or collectibles list.

Exploration is inseparable from risk: enemies can interrupt a detour, and combat skill affects how safely you can investigate. PlayStation’s guide also points to additional territories in the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. Read PC Gamer’s discussion of Elden Ring’s exploration and see PlayStation’s Shadow of the Erdtree guide.

  3. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Best for: Players who want traversal and puzzle-solving to feed each other.

Tears of the Kingdom builds discovery around a layered environment and the freedom to experiment with routes and tools. The sky and the depths add distinct spaces to investigate beyond the surface, with puzzles and treasures along the way. Its strongest appeal is the sense that getting somewhere can be a problem to solve in its own right, not just a walk between marked objectives.

    Rank #2
    The Oregon Trail Nintendo Switch
    • True to the Original
    • Striking Art Direction and Score
    • Respectful Representation
    • Officially Licensed & Supported
    • Deluxe Edition Content: Full game, Cowboys & Critters DLC, 3 art cards, Reversible coversheet

That freedom can also make the experience feel less directed: players who prefer a tightly signposted story may want a more linear adventure. Plarium’s guide to open-world games highlights the sky and depths as additional areas for puzzles and treasure.

  4. No Man’s Sky

Best for: Players drawn to planetary discovery and a vast procedural sandbox.

Hello Games describes it this way: “No Man’s Sky is a game about exploration and survival in an infinite procedurally generated galaxy.” Travel, planetary discovery, and cataloguing unfamiliar life give the game its wide-ranging sense of novelty. Because its worlds are generated, the experience differs from a carefully authored mystery: exploration offers breadth and variation, but the moment-to-moment discoveries are tied to a larger loop of resource gathering and survival.

Those systems are part of the appeal for players who enjoy having practical reasons to travel; they can also add friction if you want discovery without upkeep. Hello Games’ press kit lists PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 among the platforms, alongside other platform information. Availability can vary by region and change over time, so check the relevant local store listing before buying. Read Hello Games’ description and check its press kit.

  5. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Best for: Players who want fantasy wandering with role-playing freedom.

Skyrim is built for the player who sets out for one destination and gets sidetracked by a cave, settlement, or distant landmark. Its broad landscape, variety, and many ways to shape a character make exploration part of a larger role-playing life rather than a single mystery to solve. PC Gamer points to the scale and variety of its landscape and the breadth of player choice.

Its appeal is less about one carefully controlled discovery arc and more about making your own route through an expansive fantasy setting. PC Gamer’s open-world guide discusses Skyrim’s landscape and player freedom.

    Rank #3
The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales - Amazon Exclusive Edition (Nintendo Switch 2)
    • The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales - Amazon Exclusive Edition includes a double-sided poster.

    • Seven Weapon Types and Fairy Magic - Arm yourself with up to two weapons at a time to do battle with the beast tribes that overrun the continent. Faie’s fairy magic will prove handy in clearing both the fiends and puzzles that stand in your way.
    • The Four Ages of a Millennium - To lift a curse, Elliot and Faie will cross through the Doorway of Time to visit different periods in history. Across every age, a terrible threat looms over Elliot and Faie’s adventure.
    • Personalized Adventuring with Magicite - Customize Elliot’s weapons by equipping different combinations of magicite found during the journey. Try out all sorts of variations and confront obstacles using your own methods.
  6. Subnautica

Best for: Players who want environmental exploration with survival tension.

Subnautica turns the underwater environment into both a route to discover and a source of danger. Progress comes from venturing into unfamiliar biomes, finding materials and clues, and learning what the ocean’s creatures and conditions will allow. The underwater setting gives navigation a different texture from a conventional land-based open world: depth and distance can make a promising discovery feel risky.

Survival demands are central rather than incidental, so this is a stronger fit if you enjoy managing pressure alongside exploration than if you want a relaxed sightseeing game.

  7. Hollow Knight

Best for: Players who enjoy mapping a connected world on foot.

Hollow Knight offers exploration at a more compact, maze-like scale. Its interconnected underground regions encourage players to remember blocked routes, revisit earlier areas with new abilities, and look for paths that were easy to miss. Discoveries tend to be authored and tied to the world’s atmosphere, secrets, and progression rather than procedural novelty.

Movement and combat are tightly linked: reaching a new area may require platforming precision or a fight. It is a good choice for players who like gradual map-making, but not for those seeking effortless traversal across a huge landscape.

  8. Red Dead Redemption 2

Best for: Players who want a richly detailed world to roam between story missions.

    Rank #4
Ring Fit Adventure - Nintendo Switch
    • An adventure game that’s also a workout
    • Explore a huge fantasy world and defeat enemies using real-life exercise
    • Jog, sprint, and high knee through dozens of levels
    • Control in-game movements with the new Ring-Con and Leg Strap accessories
    • Learn about all the great new features, including a new voice option and a fun new Rhythm Game mode that are included in the latest free update

Red Dead Redemption 2 rewards unhurried travel through a grounded, authored landscape. Its appeal lies in observing the world and stumbling across locations and encounters, rather than in a puzzle-box structure or an endless stream of procedurally generated planets. The deliberate pace and substantial story presence make it a better fit for players who enjoy settling into a place than for those who want fast, constant traversal.

Its exploration is woven into a larger action-adventure, so players looking for discovery without combat or mission structure may prefer a more dedicated exploration game.

  9. Journey

Best for: Players who want a concise, atmospheric journey through an unfamiliar landscape.

Journey is the compact option on this list: it uses a carefully composed environment and a clear forward path to make movement and discovery feel meditative. Rather than asking players to manage a sprawling map, it focuses attention on the route and the changing landscape. That makes it a useful alternative if the scale and systems of open-world games feel overwhelming.

Its brevity and directed structure mean it offers less freeform roaming than the higher-ranked sandboxes. Choose it for a focused experience, not for a world to inhabit for dozens of hours.

  10. Death Stranding

Best for: Players who enjoy planning routes through challenging terrain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Death Stranding makes travel itself the central problem. Players move through a stark landscape while considering terrain, equipment, and the practical demands of a delivery. The world is authored, and the satisfaction comes less from collecting a checklist of landmarks than from learning how to cross difficult ground and choosing a workable route.

Its distinctive pace and delivery-focused structure are not for everyone, but they make it one of the more unusual choices for players who find navigation more compelling than conventional questing.
