10 Best Fallout DLCs, Ranked: Which Fallout Expansion Is Best?

Far Harbor is the best Fallout expansion overall in this ranking, thanks to its substantial new region, faction conflicts, and room to explore. This is an editorial comparison, not a universal verdict: readers who value New Vegas’s science-fiction comedy or a more unsettling atmosphere may prefer a different pick.

How this Fallout DLC ranking works

This list compares substantial story or world expansions from Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, and Fallout 4. The ranking weighs narrative and character work, setting and atmosphere, meaningful choices, gameplay variety, and the amount of substantial new content. Those are editorial criteria, not measured scores, and different priorities can change the order.

The scope leaves out primarily item-based add-ons and Fallout 4 workshop packs. Bethesda’s Fallout Anthology announcement lists five Fallout 3 add-ons in the Game of the Year Edition and six New Vegas add-ons in the Ultimate Edition: Bethesda’s Fallout Anthology announcement. The list below selects four expansions from each game. For Fallout 4, Bethesda identifies Far Harbor, Automatron, and Nuka-World as story expansions, distinct from the three workshop add-ons, in its Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition description; this top ten includes Far Harbor and Nuka-World.

The 10 best Fallout DLCs, ranked

1. Far Harbor — Fallout 4

Far Harbor takes the top spot for combining a substantial new setting with exploration, faction stories, and player choices. Bethesda describes it as the largest landmass it had created for an add-on, with new faction quests, settlements, creatures, and dungeons. That is Bethesda’s own description, not an independently measured comparison. The expansion’s reception was not unanimous: the review archive includes praise as well as a platform-specific performance complaint, so the response should not be treated as uniform across platforms. Bethesda’s Far Harbor announcement; Metacritic’s Far Harbor page.

#1 Best Overall
Fallout 4 Game of The Year Edition - PlayStation 4
  • Freedom and Liberty Do whatever you want in a massive open world with hundreds of locations, characters, and quests. Join multiple factions vying for power or go it alone, the choices are all yours
  • Be whoever you want with the special character system. From a power Armored soldier to the charismatic smooth talker, you can choose from hundreds of perks and develop your own playstyle
  • New next generation graphics and lighting engine brings to life the world of fallout. From the blasted forests of the common wealth to the ruins of Boston, every location is packed with dynamic detail
  • Intense first or third person combat can also be slowed down with the new dynamic Vault Tec Assisted Targeting System (V.A.T.S) that lets you choose your attacks and enjoy cinematic carnage

2. Old World Blues — Fallout: New Vegas

Old World Blues is the strongest alternative for players who want tonal originality and science-fiction comedy. Its dialogue and humor are notable strengths in the available review material, making it an easy pick for readers who value a distinctive voice over the broader exploration that puts Far Harbor first. The sources available here do not establish a comprehensive critical consensus. The official New Vegas add-on catalog is listed on Steam.

3. Point Lookout — Fallout 3

Point Lookout earns a high position for its distinctive, unsettling new region and emphasis on exploration. It is a strong choice for players looking for a change of place and atmosphere rather than a direct continuation of the main quest. Bethesda’s edition information confirms it as an official Fallout 3 add-on, though the sources cited here do not establish detailed mechanics or plot specifics. 4. Dead Money — Fallout: New Vegas

Dead Money ranks highly for readers drawn to a survival-focused story and a markedly different atmosphere from the base game. Its appeal is more specialized than the top three: players who prize tension and mood may rate it even higher, while those seeking broad exploration may prefer Far Harbor or Point Lookout. It is an official New Vegas add-on; detailed mechanics are not established by the sources cited here. Bethesda’s Fallout Anthology announcement.

5. The Pitt — Fallout 3

The Pitt makes the list for a compact, morally charged story built around a distinctive setting and difficult choices. Its narrower scale keeps it below the expansions that offer a stronger combination of setting, tone, and variety. Bethesda’s anthology confirms it as one of Fallout 3’s official add-ons. Bethesda’s Fallout Anthology announcement.

Fallout 3 - PlayStation 3 Game of the Year Edition
  • Fallout 3 Game of the Year Edition PS3

6. Nuka-World — Fallout 4

Nuka-World is a major Fallout 4 story expansion with its own strong theme and faction play. It ranks below The Pitt here because the list favors the overall balance of setting, story, exploration, and choice rather than theme alone. Bethesda categorizes it as one of Fallout 4’s three story expansions, separate from its workshop add-ons. Bethesda’s Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition description.

7. Lonesome Road — Fallout: New Vegas

Lonesome Road is the best fit for readers who want a direct continuation and culmination of Courier-related story threads. Steam’s description says the player is contacted by Ulysses, the original Courier Six; Steam’s New Vegas expansion catalog also lists new terrain, enemies, perks, weapons, and a higher level cap across the expansion catalog. Those catalog details describe New Vegas DLC collectively, not features unique to Lonesome Road. Steam’s Lonesome Road page; Steam’s New Vegas DLC catalog.

8. Broken Steel — Fallout 3

Broken Steel is a valuable choice for players who want a continuation of Fallout 3’s main quest rather than a wholly separate destination. That makes it an important part of the game’s expansion lineup, even if it is less self-contained as a new setting than the higher-ranked picks. Bethesda’s anthology confirms it as an official add-on. Bethesda’s Fallout Anthology announcement.

9. Honest Hearts — Fallout: New Vegas

Honest Hearts is a worthwhile pick for players who favor a compact setting and character-focused story. It sits lower because the ranking prioritizes expansions with a more pronounced structural or tonal distinction. Bethesda’s anthology confirms it as part of the New Vegas Ultimate Edition add-on set. Bethesda’s Fallout Anthology announcement.

10. Mothership Zeta — Fallout 3

Mothership Zeta rounds out the ranking as a memorable science-fiction detour. Its more linear feel makes it a more specialized recommendation than the open-ended experiences higher on the list, but the change of genre gives it a clear identity. Bethesda’s anthology confirms it as an official Fallout 3 add-on. Bethesda’s Fallout Anthology announcement.

Notable expansions just outside the top ten

Operation: Anchorage — Fallout 3

Operation: Anchorage is the notable omission. This ranking favors varied story and exploration experiences over a more contained combat simulation, so it falls just outside the list. That is a scope choice, not a claim that the add-on has no audience.

Automatron — Fallout 4

Automatron is a substantial smaller add-on, but the ten available places go to expansions prioritized here for the breadth of their story or world experience. Bethesda includes it among Fallout 4’s three story expansions in the Anniversary Edition, alongside Far Harbor and Nuka-World. Bethesda’s Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition description.

Which Fallout expansion should you play first?

  • For a large new region and exploration: Start with Far Harbor; Point Lookout is another strong atmospheric choice.
  • For science-fiction comedy: Choose Old World Blues.
  • For an intense atmosphere: Consider Dead Money.
  • For New Vegas story culmination: Choose Lonesome Road.
  • For more Fallout 3 main-quest continuation: Pick Broken Steel.

If you are choosing by edition rather than one add-on, Bethesda says Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition includes the base game, all six official add-ons, and more than 150 Creation Club items. The six add-ons named are Far Harbor, Automatron, Nuka-World, Contraptions Workshop, Vault-Tec Workshop, and Wasteland Workshop; the Creation Club count is bundle content, not a measure of DLC quality. Bethesda’s Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition description.
