If you’re looking for games to help you fall asleep, choose something that feels calm and easy to put down—not a game you have to finish before bed. These ten editorial picks range from timer-free puzzles to cozy island life and quiet exploration. They may suit a relaxing pre-bed routine, but there’s no evidence here that playing them makes people fall asleep or treats sleep problems.
What makes a game restful is personal: some players want a simple organizing puzzle, while others prefer fishing, gentle exploration, or a story. The list is ordered by how naturally each game lends itself to an unhurried session, not by any measured sleep benefit. The linked descriptions establish their activities and, in some cases, their pace; they do not establish clinical effects.

10 games to try for a calmer pre-bed session
1. Unpacking — a quiet, structured puzzle
Unpack household objects and decide where they belong as the character’s life story gradually emerges through their possessions. The official game site describes it as meditative and explicitly says there are no timers or scores, making it the clearest choice here if you want a task with a defined shape but no clock pressure. Its soundtrack is by BAFTA award-winning composer and audio director Jeff van Dyck. Witch Beam’s official Unpacking page lists the game and its details.
The site reproduces reviewer Rachel Kaser of VentureBeat describing it as “One of the most relaxing and blissful experiences I’ve played all year.” That is one reviewer’s personal impression, not evidence of a sleep effect. Witch Beam also reproduces the quotation.

2. Animal Crossing: New Horizons — open-ended island life
Build and decorate an island, craft items, fish, catch bugs, and spend time with its community. Nintendo presents it as a carefree new life on a deserted island. Its activities are varied and open-ended, so you can choose a small task rather than follow a fixed puzzle sequence. Nintendo’s guide is specifically about Nintendo Switch games in a UK context; check the individual listing for your region and edition. Nintendo UK’s cozy-games guide describes the game.
3. Cozy Grove — gentle island exploration and crafting
Play as a Spirit Scout exploring an island and helping local ghosts, with crafting as part of the experience. Nintendo describes it in a gentle, restorative way. It is a good fit if you like having a light purpose while exploring rather than solving a tightly structured puzzle. The cited recommendation is for Switch; confirm current platform and regional availability on the game’s listing. Nintendo UK’s guide provides its description.

4. A Little to the Left — household-object organization
Arrange household objects into satisfying patterns and keep an eye out for a mischievous cat that sometimes disrupts your work. Nintendo includes it among its cozy Switch recommendations. Its puzzle format gives each session a clear activity, though the cat’s interference means the mood is playful rather than completely serene. Nintendo UK’s guide describes the game.
5. Dorfromantik — low-pressure tile placement
Place tiles to grow an idyllic village landscape. Nintendo describes it as relaxing tile-placement strategy, so it may suit you if gentle planning is more appealing than a story or a checklist of chores. It is still a strategy game: the pleasure comes from considering how pieces fit, not from aimless exploration. The cited listing is for Switch; check your region’s individual game page for supported platforms. Nintendo UK’s guide describes its play.

6. A Short Hike — scenic mountain wandering
Hike, climb, and glide through peaceful mountain landscapes. Nintendo’s description makes it the natural pick if you want a compact-feeling exploration activity instead of farming or arranging objects. The source characterizes the setting as peaceful but does not specify session length or whether every activity is free of time pressure. Its cited recommendation is for Switch. Nintendo UK’s guide gives the game overview.
7. LEGO Builder’s Journey — a story-led building puzzler
Play through a relaxing puzzle story or use Creative Mode to build LEGO models. PlayStation’s guide describes both modes, giving you a choice between following a designed sequence and making something more freely. The cited platform source covers PS4 and PS5; check the individual store listing for edition details. PlayStation’s cozy-games guide describes LEGO Builder’s Journey.

8. Coffee Talk — prepare drinks and listen
Make coffee and other warm drinks while listening to customers talk through their problems. Nintendo describes it as conversation-centered storytelling, so it is a better fit if you want to settle into dialogue than manage a growing farm or solve spatial puzzles. The cited recommendation is for Switch; check the game’s own regional listing for other platform availability. Nintendo UK’s guide describes the premise.

9. Disney Dreamlight Valley — cozy activities with quests
Garden, cook, fish, follow stories, and build a neighborhood with Disney and Pixar characters. Those activities sound relaxing, but the game is quest-rich rather than purely aimless, so it may feel less restful if you prefer not to have objectives waiting for you. Nintendo’s cited guide covers Switch, while PlayStation’s cozy-game guide covers PS4 and PS5; confirm the current edition and regional availability on the specific store page. Nintendo UK and PlayStation describe the game.

10. Stardew Valley — an open-ended routine, with occasional combat
Farm, care for animals, fish, cook, explore, and build relationships. Its breadth makes it easy to settle into a familiar routine, but it is not combat-free: PlayStation’s description includes caves and fighting creatures. If cave exploration feels too stimulating, choose a farm or fishing activity instead. Nintendo’s cited guide recommends its Switch version, and PlayStation’s guide covers PS4 and PS5; check listings for your region and edition. Nintendo UK and PlayStation describe its activities.

Before you play
Nintendo UK’s December 12, 2022 guide says its featured cozy games involve “no racing against the clock nor rushing enemies.” That is useful context for the Switch titles it recommends, not proof that every moment of every game is free of pressure. For availability, Nintendo’s current cozy-game page covers Switch and Switch 2 as a category, but that does not confirm support for every title on both systems. Check the individual game listing in your region before buying or downloading.
The sources used for these recommendations describe game tone and mechanics, not sleep outcomes; no relevant published statistic or sleep study establishing that these games improve sleep was identified. Prices and editions can vary by platform and region, so check the current storefront listing rather than relying on a fixed price.
