The best noir game depends on what you want to do: interrogate suspects, role-play a troubled detective, solve a tightly constructed mystery, or fight through a world steeped in crime and fatalism. This ranking weighs investigative depth, noir atmosphere, the kind of play each game offers, and how directly it suits someone seeking a detective story. It is an editorial recommendation, not an objective or consensus ranking.
How this ranking works
Noir is a mood and storytelling tradition, not a single game genre. Some entries put deduction at the center; others use crime, corruption, or fatalism as the frame for role-playing or action. The list ranks games by the strength of their noir identity and the distinctiveness of the experience they offer, while noting when a title is not a conventional detective procedural.

The 10 best noir games
1. L.A. Noire
L.A. Noire is the clearest fit for players who want to work a period police case. You follow detective Cole Phelps through post-war Hollywood, investigating crimes, questioning suspects, and pursuing leads. Rockstar says the cases were inspired by real crimes in 1947 Los Angeles, but its store also describes the story as fictionalized and not historically accurate; treat the setting as crime fiction, not a history lesson. For the Nintendo Switch edition specifically, Nintendo says it includes the complete original game and additional downloadable content, as well as collectibles and detective suits. #1 Best Overall
- Showcased in 1080p for the PlayStation 4 and stunning 4K for PlayStation 4 Pro.
- Includes the complete original game and all additional downloadable content plus new collectibles and detective suits to unlock, each with unique special abilities.
- Features an array of technical and graphical enhancements for a more realistic Los Angeles.
2. Disco Elysium
Disco Elysium makes investigation a role-playing experience. Its amnesiac detective pursues a murder case in Revachol, with character skills, dialogue, and player choices shaping how the inquiry unfolds. Choose it for a story-led game where the detective’s inner life and the surrounding political and psychological texture matter as much as solving the crime. It is not an action-heavy police procedural. PlayStation’s official game page.
3. Return of the Obra Dinn
Return of the Obra Dinn shifts noir-flavored deduction away from the familiar city streets. The mystery unfolds aboard a merchant ship, and the pleasure is piecing together what happened through observation and inference. Steam’s tags include mystery, detective, puzzle, and noir, making it a strong pick for players who want to reason through a case rather than play a conventional urban cop story. Official game site.
Rank #2
- A fast-paced, tense deductive game you can teach and play in 5 minutes!
- 4 Game Modes provide new challenges!
4. Max Payne
Max Payne is the action-first choice: its appeal is noir tone delivered through a crime story and forceful gunplay, not a detailed evidence board or sustained suspect interviews. PC Gamer’s 2025 detective-games feature identifies it as an example of noir action. Pick it when you want a brooding crime-world atmosphere with combat at the center. A ranked top ten needs six more individually verified games to support fair descriptions and meaningful distinctions. The available evidence establishes the four recommendations above, but does not substantiate additional entries. Rather than fill the remaining places with unsupported claims or treat different kinds of noir as interchangeable, this list stops at the titles it can characterize responsibly.
