The original PlayStation has one especially clear third-person-shooter pick: Syphon Filter. A ten-game list needs a wider boundary, though, because many PS1 games mix shooting with survival horror or action-adventure. This ranking includes those hybrids but marks them plainly; it favors games where shooting and a third-person view matter to the experience, while accounting for how much another genre takes over.
The order is editorial, not an objective score: it weighs how central shooting is, how clearly the camera supports combat, encounter and weapon variety, and the prominence of horror, exploration, or platforming. These are recommendations for games where you shoot in third person—not a claim that all ten belong to one uncontested genre.

1. Syphon Filter
Syphon Filter is the strongest fit for a list of PS1 third-person shooters. Its 1999 PlayStation release puts you in three-dimensional levels where you move freely and shoot enemies from a third-person camera. Aiming with some weapons shifts the view to first person, so it is not a fixed third-person perspective throughout. That change is a combat tool rather than a reason to mistake the game for a first-person shooter. MobyGames’ entry identifies Eidetic as developer and Sony Computer Entertainment as publisher.
Why it ranks first: shooting is central to the described play, and the third-person camera is a defining part of how you move through combat. It is the clearest researched answer to “What are the best PS1 shooter games like Syphon Filter?”
#1 Best Overall
- 1 or 2 Players
- Vibration Function Compatible
- Analog Control Compatible
- New Pros and New Tricks
- Multiple Play Modes
2. Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider belongs here as a third-person action-adventure with memorable gunfights, not as a pure shooter. Sony’s history of the series dates the original to 1996 and describes a 3D adventure built around exploration, platforming, and tense shootouts. GamesRadar’s retrospective similarly notes its puzzles and exploration alongside gunplay, while emphasizing that mental challenges matter more than action.
Best for: players who want third-person shooting as part of a larger adventure. The shooting is real, but it is one element of a broader mix.
Rank #2
- 1-2 Players
- Dual Shock Controller Compatible
- Analog Controller Compatible
- Revolutionary 3D Graphics
- Simulation and Arcade Mode
3. Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil 2 is a survival-horror hybrid whose combat makes it a natural adjacent pick. GamesRadar dates it to 1998 and describes a sequel that leans further toward action without leaving horror behind. A first play can also affect a subsequent run, giving its structure more to explore than a straightforward sequence of shootouts. That retrospective context supports its place as an action-oriented horror game, not a strict genre label as a third-person shooter.

Best for: players who want tense, horror-led encounters rather than continuous shooter action.
Rank #3
- All new playable critters
- Huge mystical worlds
- Challenging new game play
- Scores of silly creatures
4. Dino Crisis
Dino Crisis is another survival-horror inclusion. The PlayStation Store describes a covert mission at a research facility and survival against prehistoric threats. That premise makes it a useful pick for readers who are happy to include shooting within a horror game, but the official description does not establish it as a pure shooter.
There is also an edition distinction worth knowing if you are looking to play it now: the US PlayStation Store listing is for a conversion of the original PlayStation game for PS4 and PS5, released October 15, 2024. That version adds up-rendering, rewind, quick save, and custom video filters; it is a separate digital product from an original PS1 disc.
Rank #4
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
5–10. More PS1 games to consider
The available title-level evidence supports the games above but does not substantiate six more choices as either strict third-person shooters or well-described hybrids. A retrospective PS1 category page places Syphon Filter and Syphon Filter 2 under action, and Dino Crisis 2 under shooter, but it does not explain its criteria. Those labels illustrate how genre classification can vary; they are not enough on their own to support a ranked ten-game list. The category page’s classifications should be treated as one source’s categorization, not an authoritative taxonomy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a dependable starting point, begin with Syphon Filter if you want shooting to be the main event. Choose Tomb Raider for an adventure that includes gunfights, or Resident Evil 2 and Dino Crisis if horror is part of the appeal. Going beyond those picks requires checking each game individually rather than assuming that a broad “shooter” label means third-person combat is central.
Choosing a version to play
An original PlayStation disc and a later digital conversion are different products, even when they share a game title. For instance, the current US PlayStation Store listing for Dino Crisis is a PS4/PS5 conversion with added features, not the original disc release. If you are buying a physical copy, check its region, completeness, and condition; if you want to play digitally, verify the platform and edition on the store listing.
