Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThere is no separate “highly compressed PPSSPP game” format. A PSP disc dump is usually an ISO, and the practical compressed version is a CSO file. PPSSPP can load both, so the best approach is to keep your original ISO, create a standard CSO1 copy with maxcso, and test it in PPSSPP.
The ten games below are an editorial selection of standout PSP titles chosen for popularity and genre variety—not an official PPSSPP ranking or a list of guaranteed file sizes. Exact CSO sizes depend on the specific dump and conversion settings.

What “highly compressed PPSSPP games” really means
“ISO compressed” is commonly used online, but it is technically inaccurate. ISO is the uncompressed disc-image format. The compressed output is normally CSO, an established format supported by PPSSPP and described in its documentation as well-tested, efficient, and generally fast to load.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCompression does not turn a game into a different game, and it does not remove the need for a legitimate game dump. Create files from discs you own or from material you are legally allowed to use. PPSSPP itself does not require a PSP BIOS file because it uses high-level emulation rather than a dumped BIOS.

10 excellent PSP games for a compact PPSSPP library
These picks are recommendations for a varied PSP collection. “Best” here means a combination of reputation, replay value, genre variety, and suitability for playing through PPSSPP—not smallest compressed size.
1. God of War: Chains of Olympus
Sony’s action-adventure prequel is one of the PSP’s most recognizable showcase games, with cinematic presentation, large set pieces, and fast combat. It is a strong choice when you want a console-style action game in a portable format.
Compatibility is not universal across every release: the PPSSPP compatibility database records an Ingame entry for the Japan-region 1.00 release, but region, revision, game ID, device, and settings can affect results. Check the specific release rather than treating one report as a guarantee.
2. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
This action RPG combines real-time combat, character progression, missions, and a story connected to Final Fantasy VII. Its mission structure makes it particularly convenient for shorter handheld sessions while still offering a substantial campaign.
3. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories
Vice City Stories adapts the open-world crime formula to PSP with a large city, vehicles, combat, side activities, and a campaign built around Victor Vance. It is a good pick for players who want a long-form sandbox rather than a linear handheld experience.
4. Persona 3 Portable
This portable RPG blends dungeon crawling with social simulation. The calendar structure, relationship systems, turn-based battles, and multiple protagonist options make it one of the deepest long-play games on the system.

- An all-new treatment of the classics on the ultimate multi-player platform
5. Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
Freedom Unite is a huge action-hunting game built around preparation, equipment upgrades, and increasingly difficult monsters. Its repeatable hunts and extensive gear progression give it exceptional replay value, whether played alone or with supported multiplayer setups.
6. Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep
With three connected campaigns, fast deck-based combat, and a broad Disney-and-Square-Enix setting, Birth by Sleep offers more content than a typical short portable adventure. It is a natural choice for fans of action RPGs and story-driven campaigns.
7. Tekken 6
Tekken 6 is an easy recommendation for fighting-game fans. It provides a large roster, multiple modes, and the precision-focused combat expected from the series. A compressed copy is especially convenient for a device with limited storage when you want several fighters in the same library.
8. Daxter
This platformer gives Daxter his own adventure, mixing traditional platforming with gadgets, minigames, and humor. It is a lighter alternative to the PSP’s RPGs and action blockbusters, and a good way to add genre balance to a compact collection.
9. Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions
The expanded PSP version of the tactical RPG offers grid-based battles, job customization, challenging encounters, and a dense political story. It is best suited to players who value planning and character-building over reflex-based combat.

10. Lumines II
Lumines II is a stylish puzzle game built around rhythm, timing, and clearing blocks in sequence. Its quick sessions and strong replay loop make it an ideal companion to longer story games.

How to compress an ISO into a CSO
PPSSPP does not provide a documented built-in ISO-to-CSO conversion menu. Use an external utility such as maxcso.
Basic conversion
maxcso myfile.iso
This creates a CSO from the ISO. On Windows, you can also drag an ISO onto maxcso.exe.
Write the result to another folder
maxcso --output-path=compressed/ myfile.iso
The tool keeps the input basename and writes the compressed output into the specified directory.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the broad-compatibility block size
maxcso --block=2048 game.iso
2048-byte blocks are the compatibility-oriented choice. Larger blocks can improve compression by roughly 2%–3%, but maxcso warns that many readers support only 2048-byte blocks. PPSSPP versions released after October 26, 2014 support larger block sizes, but other readers and PSP custom firmware may not.
Other useful commands
maxcso --measure game.iso
maxcso --threads=N game.iso
maxcso --fast game.iso
maxcso --decompress game.cso -o game.iso
--measureestimates compressed size without saving an output file.--threads=Nsets the thread count.--fastuses faster basic zlib or LZ4 methods rather than prioritizing maximum processing efficiency.--decompressrestores a raw ISO.
maxcso uses compression level 9 internally for ordinary compression, so you do not need to add a conventional --level=9 option.
Should you use CSO1, CSO2, ZSO, or DAX?
For a general PPSSPP library, use ordinary CSO1:
maxcso --format=cso1 game.iso
maxcso supports cso1, cso2, zso, and dax, but CSO2, ZSO, and DAX are not the safest universal recommendations. They have compatibility limitations or experimental status, and maxcso specifically advises avoiding DAX when CSO with larger blocks is supported.

Libdeflate output can also reduce compatibility with real PSP custom firmware, which is why it is disabled by default. Do not optimize for a tiny theoretical saving if the file must work across several readers.
Is CHD better than CSO?
Not automatically. PPSSPP added CHD support in version 1.17, but PSP images must be converted in DVD mode with 2048-byte hunk/sector size. Other hunk sizes may not work correctly. PPSSPP’s documentation describes CHD as offering only a slightly better compression ratio than CSO, so the extra conversion requirements do not make it the obvious choice for every library.
For simple, established compatibility, CSO1 remains the sensible default. Consider CHD only when you understand the required conversion settings and know that the software you plan to use supports it.
How to open a CSO in PPSSPP
Windows and macOS
- Open PPSSPP.
- Select File → Load and choose the ISO or CSO.
You can also open the Games tab, navigate to the folder containing the image, and click the game entry. On PC, the up-arrow button moves up one directory level.
Android
- Copy the ISO or CSO into a folder PPSSPP can access.
- Open PPSSPP and select the Games tab.
- Navigate to that folder.
- Tap the game icon.
A CSO does not need to be extracted into another archive before loading. If the file is still inside a ZIP, RAR, or similar archive, extract it first.

On Windows, current guidance should use Direct3D 11, Vulkan, or OpenGL: PPSSPP 1.20 removed Direct3D 9 and DirectSound support, while adding low-latency WASAPI on compatible systems. On Android, KitKat is no longer supported, and compatibility below Android 5 was dropped in connection with Google Play’s 16-KB page-size requirement.
Troubleshooting compressed games
The game does not appear
- Confirm that you are viewing the folder containing the ISO or CSO.
- Extract the file if it is still inside an archive.
- Check that the image is not corrupt or in an unsupported container.
- Update PPSSPP if you are using an old version; PPSSPP 1.20 specifically improved handling of unsupported ISOs.
The CSO shows a black screen, crashes, loses music, or hangs
Do not delete the original ISO. The conversion may be incomplete or corrupt, the image may use a nonstandard block size, or the title may have a game-specific compatibility issue. Re-create the file with ordinary CSO1 and 2048-byte blocks, then compare it with the original ISO in PPSSPP.
CSO is slower than ISO
“CSO always causes lag” is not accurate. PPSSPP says CSO generally performs very well and can be as fast as—or faster than—ISO when storage is slow, because reading less data can offset decompression work. Results still vary with the device, storage medium, game, format, and block size. Test both files if performance matters.
How to choose the right compressed format
| Need | Recommended choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Best general compatibility | CSO1, 2048-byte blocks | Established format and compatibility-oriented block size. |
| Fast conversion | CSO1 with --fast |
Prioritizes processing speed over maximum compression. |
| Smallest possible CSO experiment | --use-zopfli |
Usually saves only about 0.5%–1.0% more, while taking much longer and using more memory. |
| Cross-device and real-PSP use | Avoid experimental formats and unusual blocks | CSO2, ZSO, DAX, libdeflate output, and larger blocks can reduce interoperability. |
Compression is a storage trade-off, not a quality setting. Higher compression does not always produce a meaningfully smaller file, and the smallest file is not necessarily the most compatible.
Checking compatibility before blaming compression
PPSSPP’s compatibility report is useful, but it is not a “best games” ranking or a compressed-size database. Its categories include Perfect, Playable, Ingame, Menu/Intro, Doesn’t Boot, and Unreported.
Results can differ by title, region, revision, and game ID. Treat a report for one regional release as evidence about that release—not proof that every version behaves identically. If an ISO works but its CSO does not, first recreate the CSO with conservative settings before concluding that PPSSPP cannot run the game.
