From shared missions in Future Cop: L.A.P.D. to party progression in Crash Bash, these PS1 co-op picks offer very different ways to play together.

The best PS1 co-op games give both players a meaningful way to help each other—but “co-op” can mean anything from sharing a mission to controlling a companion or teaming up only in battles. This ranking favors games with substantive shared play, while making those differences clear. It is an editorial selection, not an official or definitive platform-wide ranking.

How to choose a PS1 co-op game

Check what the mode actually asks players to do. A two-player listing does not necessarily mean cooperation: versus play, alternating turns and shared campaigns are different experiences. The games below are ranked with priority given to the scope of co-op, player two’s control, ease of joining, and variety.

For a quick pick, Future Cop: L.A.P.D. offers mission-based team play, while Crash Bash turns cooperation into party-game progression. Diablo and Gauntlet Legends are better fits for a longer dungeon crawl. The remaining games are worth considering if you are comfortable with co-op that is limited to a helper, a companion, or battles.

The 10 best PS1 co-op games

1. Future Cop: L.A.P.D.

Future Cop: L.A.P.D. is the strongest pick here for players seeking an action game built around shared missions. Its PlayStation listing describes Crime War as playable alone or with a friend, making it the campaign-style co-op choice on this list. The same listing separately identifies Precinct Assault as a two-player strategic mode, so do not confuse that mode with the cooperative mission experience. GameFAQs / GameSpot’s PlayStation listing gives the US release date as September 16, 1998, and identifies Electronic Arts as publisher and EA Redwood Shores as developer.

#1 Best Overall
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (Renewed)
  • 1 or 2 Players
  • Vibration Function Compatible
  • Analog Control Compatible
  • New Pros and New Tricks
  • Multiple Play Modes

2. Army Men: Air Attack

This is the list’s other clear cooperative-campaign option: the PS1 version documents a two-player co-op campaign. It suits players who want to work through an action game together rather than take turns or compete. Be precise when searching for it: the Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Color versions use the title Army Men: Air Combat, and versions differ. The Army Men Website’s PS1 reference covers Air Attack.

3. Crash Bash

Crash Bash makes co-op a shared party-game journey rather than a conventional action campaign. Two players can tackle its story mode together, competing against two AI opponents in minigames and progressing through trophies and boss encounters. That structure makes it an easy game to dip into for a short session, with an ongoing progression path for players who want more. The Classic co-op PS1 guide describes the cooperative story mode.

Rank #2
Gran Turismo (Renewed)
  • 1-2 Players
  • Dual Shock Controller Compatible
  • Analog Controller Compatible
  • Revolutionary 3D Graphics
  • Simulation and Arcade Mode

4. Diablo

The PS1 version of Diablo adds local co-op to a deeper dungeon-crawling experience. Its appeal is the longer-form loop of exploring, fighting and developing characters together, but it is not the easiest entry point: the PS1 co-op account describes a slower pace and high difficulty. Choose it when you want a substantial crawl and are happy to learn as you go, rather than a quick, immediately accessible match. Classic co-op’s PS1 guide covers its local multiplayer.

5. Gauntlet Legends

Gauntlet Legends brings local cooperative action to PS1, but this edition supports two players—not the four available in other versions. That platform-specific limit matters if you are choosing a game for a group. For two people who want an arcade-style fantasy adventure, it is a more direct fit than games where player two is restricted to a helper role or battle participation. Classic co-op’s guide notes the PS1 player limit.

Rank #3
Spyro: Year of the Dragon - PlayStation (Renewed)
  • All new playable critters
  • Huge mystical worlds
  • Challenging new game play
  • Scores of silly creatures

6. Chocobo’s Dungeon 2

This dungeon crawler offers local co-op with player two taking the role of a helper character, rather than a second fully equivalent protagonist. Its randomized dungeons give the play sessions variety, while the helper setup makes the difference in player roles central to the experience. Pick it if you like the idea of assisting a main character through changing dungeon runs. The mode is described in Classic co-op’s PS1 guide.

7. Legend of Mana

Legend of Mana supports companion participation: player two controls a companion for much of the game, not a second main character with equal control of the adventure. That makes it a distinctive choice for someone who wants to share parts of a longer RPG, but a weaker match if both players expect to lead the story side by side. Classic co-op’s description characterizes the role as companion play.

Frogger (Renewed)
  • Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
  • This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.

8. Tales of Eternia

In Tales of Eternia, co-op is limited to battles. Up to four players can take part once the party has four characters, but exploration remains under player one’s control; it is not a four-player co-op campaign from start to finish. This can work well when friends want to join the combat in an RPG, provided they are comfortable with one person handling the journey between fights. The battle-only scope is described by Classic co-op’s PS1 guide.

9. Chosen for cooperative play: check the exact mode before buying

The available evidence supports eight candidates with game-specific descriptions of cooperative modes. A two-player catalog is useful for finding more possibilities, but a multiplayer entry alone cannot establish that players cooperate rather than compete. For that reason, this ranking does not add two unverified games just to reach ten; confirm a specific PS1 title’s manual or reliable listing and mode details before treating it as a co-op recommendation.

Controllers, Multitap, and buying the right version

A second controller is all a two-player game needs. For a larger group, the PlayStation console’s official history explains that its multiplayer adapter allowed four controllers to share one controller port; adding a second Multitap could let up to eight players join. That is the adapter’s console-level capacity, not a guarantee that any particular game supports four or eight players. Confirm the game’s own player limit—and the precise PS1 version—before buying an adapter or planning a group session. See PlayStation’s official 1994 history page.

For these games, the directly relevant physical release is the PS1 disc. Used listings can vary in condition, region and availability, so check those details on the specific listing. Do not assume that a similarly named release for another console has the same title, modes or player count.
