There is no definitive all-time RTS ranking: the genre spans competitive base-building, historical empire management, tactical terrain combat and battles on a galactic scale. This list weighs each game’s influence, strategic identity, campaign, multiplayer and replay value, plus how approachable its best-known edition is today. The order is an editorial judgment, not a universal verdict.
How this ranking defines an RTS
Real-time strategy games make players issue orders while the game world continues to move, rather than taking turns to resolve actions. The familiar formula—gather resources, build a base, train forces and outmaneuver an opponent—is only one branch. A strong all-time list should also account for games that shift the emphasis to heroes, terrain, three-dimensional movement or sheer scale. Microsoft’s overview of the genre traces several of those strands across Age of Empires, Command & Conquer, Company of Heroes, Homeworld, Total Annihilation and Warcraft.

The ranking below balances historical influence, mechanical depth, campaign quality, multiplayer and replayability. Because those strengths are not interchangeable, the order favors games that combine a distinct design contribution with a lasting reason to play. Other reputable lists make different choices; GamesRadar’s all-time selection, for example, offers another editorial snapshot rather than a definitive genre canon (GamesRadar’s best RTS games).

1. Age of Empires II
Best for: Historical empire-building and economic strategy.
#1 Best Overall
- Classic Real-Time Strategy: Build, Manage and Battle
- Easy-to-learn interface with intuitive controls and a comprehensive Tutorial Mode.
- Multiple ways to play, including reward-based Campaign Mode, 'turn-key' wars with Great Battles and Special Ops.
Age of Empires II makes the classic RTS loop feel richly historical: players develop a civilization, manage an economy, advance through ages and turn those gains into a military advantage. Its central strength is the way long-term planning and immediate battlefield decisions reinforce one another. It is a natural benchmark for the economic and historical side of the genre, rather than just another base-building contest.
Its standing among all-time greats is reflected in recurring critical recognition, including GamesRadar’s selection. The Definitive Edition provides a modernized entry point, though players should check the current edition’s platform availability and compatibility before buying. It ranks first here because its core strategy is broad, legible and enduring without sacrificing room for mastery.
2. StarCraft II
Best for: Competitive players who want precise, high-skill multiplayer.

StarCraft II represents the genre’s competitive, asymmetrical side: its factions demand distinct approaches, and success depends on balancing economy, production, scouting and tactical execution in real time. That identity separates it from games whose principal appeal is a self-contained campaign or large-scale spectacle. GamesRadar includes it among the genre’s all-time selections, and its position here reflects how clearly it demonstrates the depth of a competitive RTS.
Its emphasis on execution can make it less welcoming to players seeking a slower, forgiving introduction. But for readers who want strategy that rewards practice and adaptation, it is one of the clearest examples of the form.
3. Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos
Best for: Fantasy campaigns and battles shaped by powerful individual units.
Warcraft III gives the RTS formula a fantasy and role-playing dimension. Heroes add character-specific abilities and progression to battles that still involve armies and strategic resource decisions. That change makes engagements feel different from the economy-first rhythm of Age of Empires II or the competitive focus of StarCraft II.
Its distinctive blend of hero-driven play and campaign depth earns it a place near the top: it shows how much character and narrative structure can alter the feel of a strategy game without abandoning real-time command.
4. Command & Conquer: Red Alert
Best for: Cinematic faction warfare and brisk, memorable matches.
Red Alert is a key expression of Command & Conquer’s faction-based approach and cinematic presentation. Its appeal lies in the immediacy of its conflict: players build forces, contend for the map and exploit the strengths of their side. The series helped establish a recognizable alternative to the historical empire-building model.
For a current edition, EA’s Command & Conquer Remastered Collection packages Command & Conquer and Red Alert with remastered presentation and additional content. It is also listed on Steam. The collection makes these foundational games easier to approach, while retaining the pacing and design of their original era.

5. Company of Heroes
Best for: Tactical combat in which terrain changes the fight.
Company of Heroes stands apart by making the battlefield itself a major strategic concern. Terrain, map physics and destructibility affect how engagements unfold, so positioning and environmental awareness matter alongside army composition. That focus gives it a more tactical identity than games centered primarily on expanding an economy and assembling a large force.
It earns this place because it broadens what an RTS battle can ask of the player. Microsoft’s genre overview also identifies it as part of the tradition’s range, while the terrain-led design is the reason to choose it over a more conventional base-building game.
6. Homeworld
Best for: Players who want strategy in a genuinely three-dimensional battlefield.
Homeworld moves RTS combat away from the familiar flat map. Forces maneuver through three-dimensional space, changing the geometry of positioning and attack. That is more than a science-fiction setting: it changes how players read the battlefield and think about movement.
Its place in this ranking is secured by that singular contribution. The game represents a major design branch within RTS history, and it remains an important counterexample to the idea that strategy games must be organized around a ground-level grid.
7. Supreme Commander
Best for: Large-scale warfare and managing multiple fronts.
Supreme Commander is built around scale. PC Gamer highlights its broad battlefield view and combined air, ground and naval combat, features that make the act of surveying the war a defining part of play (PC Gamer’s discussion of Supreme Commander). Rather than treating a battle as a small skirmish, it asks players to coordinate forces across a much larger conflict.

It belongs on an all-time list because it pushes the scale of the genre in a way few entries do.
8. Total Annihilation
Best for: Players interested in the roots of large-scale RTS warfare.
Total Annihilation is a strong choice for the genre’s large-battle tradition. Its inclusion alongside Supreme Commander acknowledges a design lineage interested in the coordination and momentum of expansive warfare, rather than only the compact economy-and-army loop. Microsoft’s historical overview lists it among the genre’s notable examples.

It ranks below Supreme Commander here because the latter’s scale and battlefield presentation are more clearly supported as a defining strength in the available comparisons. Total Annihilation remains a worthwhile inclusion as an influential counterpart, not a redundant substitute.
9. Command & Conquer
Best for: A foundational, cinematic take on modern faction conflict.
The original Command & Conquer helped establish the series’ signature combination of opposing factions and cinematic presentation. Its historical importance is clearest when considered alongside Red Alert: together they show how the series made base-building strategy feel like a dramatic conflict with a strong audiovisual identity.
It shares a current collection with Red Alert in the Remastered Collection, so the same PC edition is a practical way to approach both games. Listing the two separately recognizes their distinct places in the genre, while the shared package is a useful detail for players deciding how to access them.
10. Age of Empires
Best for: The origins of historical, civilization-spanning RTS play.

The original Age of Empires helped define the historical and economic branch that its sequel would later refine. It offers a different kind of historical perspective from the medieval focus of Age of Empires II, and its place here recognizes the series’ role in establishing civilization development as a compelling real-time strategy framework.
It rounds out the list as a genre-shaping predecessor rather than the strongest entry for every modern player. Readers who mainly want a polished historical strategy experience may prefer Age of Empires II; readers interested in how the genre’s foundational ideas took shape have a reason to look further back.

This top ten prioritizes distinct contributions as well as lasting play value, so a different weighting would produce a different ranking. A list centered only on competitive multiplayer would elevate StarCraft II. One that favored campaign and narrative would give Warcraft III more ground. A ranking focused on scale would move Supreme Commander and Total Annihilation upward, while a tactical-combat list would do the same for Company of Heroes.
These games are not competing versions of one ideal RTS. Age of Empires II emphasizes historical economy; StarCraft II foregrounds competitive asymmetry; Warcraft III blends heroes with army control; Company of Heroes makes terrain decisive; Homeworld changes the battlefield’s dimensions; and Supreme Commander expands its scale. The best starting point depends on which of those strategic experiences matters most to you.

For Command & Conquer and Red Alert, EA describes the Remastered Collection as a PC digital product, and Steam has a collection listing. Check the product page for regional availability, system compatibility and current purchase options before choosing a storefront. EA’s 2020 announcement discussed physical Collector’s Editions at launch; it does not establish that those editions are currently in stock.
For the other games, confirm the edition and platform currently offered in your region before purchasing. Availability and compatibility can change, and a game’s historical importance does not guarantee that every original version is easy to run on a current system.
