The best scary games for kids offer spooky fun without treating every child as equally comfortable with ghosts, jump scares, or monster chases. For a playful haunted-house adventure, start with Luigi’s Mansion 3; for a quieter supernatural mood, consider Cozy Grove; and save the more overt monster chase of Goosebumps: Terror in Little Creek for children who are ready for it. The list below distinguishes Common Sense Media’s age recommendations from ESRB ratings, which are separate kinds of guidance.

How to choose a scary game for a child

“Scary” covers a wide range here: cartoon ghosts, zombie-themed combat, underwater suspense, and monsters that chase or grab the player. Common Sense Media’s “Scary Games (But Not TOO Scary!)” list, last updated September 22, 2026 according to its search listing, is one useful pool of age-graded suggestions—not an objective ranking or a guarantee that a particular child will enjoy a game.

Common Sense Media age recommendations are editorial guidance. ESRB ratings are U.S. content guidance, and their age categories should not be treated as equivalent to Common Sense Media’s ages. ESRB explains that its ratings combine a Rating Category, Content Descriptors, and Interactive Elements; look beyond the letter or number to the full summary. Check the current rating for the exact edition and platform in your region, and preview gameplay if a child is sensitive to a particular kind of scare.

1. Luigi’s Mansion 3 — best all-around cartoon haunted-house pick

Age guidance: Common Sense Media recommends it for ages 8+. Platform: Nintendo Switch. Scares: Cartoon ghosts and haunted-house tension, with a brave hero at the center. Common Sense Media lists the game as a 2019 release. Its playful presentation makes this the strongest starting point for many children who want a spooky adventure without a realistic-horror framing. Common Sense Media’s listing supports the age recommendation and platform.

2. Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD — for kids who like mild jump scares

Age guidance: Common Sense Media recommends it for ages 8+. Platform: Nintendo Switch (2024). Scares: Stylized ghosts and mild jump scares. It is a natural option for children who want the same broad cartoon-ghost appeal as Luigi’s Mansion 3, but the jump scares may matter to a child who dislikes sudden surprises. See Common Sense Media’s listing.

3. Luigi’s Mansion (Nintendo 3DS) — a straightforward ghost-catching adventure

Rating: ESRB Everyone (E), with Mild Cartoon Violence. Platform: Nintendo 3DS. Scares: Exploring a haunted mansion, capturing ghosts, occasional ghost projectiles, and rare boss battles. The ESRB summary describes the content; its rating is not a promise that every child will find the game unscary. Common Sense Media’s cited list does not establish current availability for this 3DS version, so check your local platform and retailer listings before planning around it. ESRB’s rating summary provides the content details.

4. Survival Z — for kids more interested in zombies than horror

Age guidance: Common Sense Media recommends it for ages 8+. Platform: Apple Arcade. Scares: Zombies in a tower-defense blend. Its premise is monster-forward, but the source describes a strategy-action mix rather than a conventional horror game. Common Sense Media lists it as a 2021 game. Check the current Apple Arcade catalog for availability. See Common Sense Media’s listing.

5. Cozy Grove — a gentler supernatural atmosphere

Age guidance: Common Sense Media recommends it for ages 10+. Platforms: Apple Arcade, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One. Scares: A supernatural twist within a relaxing life simulation, rather than conventional horror. This is a better fit for children seeking an eerie setting at a slower pace than for those looking for chase sequences or intense action. Platform availability can vary; consult Common Sense Media’s listing.

6. Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville Complete Edition — cartoon combat with zombie themes

Age guidance: Common Sense Media recommends it for ages 10+. Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One. Scares and content: Fast-paced, bloodless combat with cartoon zombies. It is more about action than frightening atmosphere, making it a possible match for kids who enjoy monster imagery but do not want a haunted-house experience. See Common Sense Media’s listing.

7. The Pathless — scary monsters in a fantasy adventure

Age guidance: Common Sense Media recommends it for ages 10+. Platforms: Apple Arcade, Mac, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Windows. Scares: A female hero faces scary monsters in an expansive fantasy setting. Consider it for an older child who wants adventure and creature encounters, rather than a game centered on ghosts or comedy. See Common Sense Media’s listing.

9. Minecraft Dungeons — fantasy monsters and action, not sustained horror

Rating: ESRB Everyone 10+ (E10+) for Fantasy Violence. Platform noted by ESRB: Nintendo Switch. Scares and content: Zombies, creepers, skeletons, and weapon-based battles. This is a dungeon action game for children drawn to fantasy enemies more than sustained horror. Do not confuse it with Minecraft: they are separate games with separate ratings and guidance. ESRB’s Minecraft Dungeons rating summary describes its content.

10. Goosebumps: Terror in Little Creek — the most overt monster-mystery option here

Rating: ESRB Everyone 10+ (E10+) for Fantasy Violence. Platforms: Windows PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series. Scares and content: Monster chases, creatures grabbing the player, slingshot attacks, and characters collapsing when health is depleted. The E10+ category is only one part of the decision: the chase and grab moments may be too intense for some children. Check the ESRB rating summary before choosing it.

Another Goosebumps option: check the specific content

Goosebumps: The Game is an E10+ puzzle game for Nintendo Switch, but its franchise name alone does not tell you how it will feel to a child. ESRB notes creatures lunging toward the screen and detailed violent text contributing to a dark tone. That combination may be a poor fit for a child who is especially bothered by sudden screen effects or unsettling descriptions. Review ESRB’s summary for the full content description.

What ratings can—and cannot—tell parents

ESRB says its ratings provide information about video game or app content to help families make informed choices. Its U.S. system has three parts: Rating Categories, Content Descriptors, and Interactive Elements. A category offers an age-oriented guide; descriptors explain why a game received that rating, and interactive elements can add context. For example, the E10+ rating for Goosebumps: Terror in Little Creek does not erase its described chases and monster grabs.

Common Sense Media’s age recommendations are a separate editorial guide, not a second label on the ESRB scale. A rating cannot predict a specific child’s reaction. If a particular element—such as a jump scare, a chase, or combat—is likely to upset your child, use the content summary and a gameplay preview to make the call, and stop if the child is uncomfortable.

For context, ESRB reports that 83% of parents with children who play video games are aware of ESRB ratings and 77% regularly check them before buying; ESRB attributes these figures to Hart Research Associates in 2025. Those figures describe parent behavior, not whether a rating predicts an individual child’s response. ESRB also reports that 65% of ratings assigned to physical and console downloadable games in 2024 were E or E10+; that broad industry statistic does not establish suitability for any particular title or child. See ESRB’s Video Game Ratings overview.

Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons are not interchangeable

Minecraft Dungeons has its own ESRB E10+ rating for Fantasy Violence. For the separate game Minecraft, the official parent guide lists PEGI 7 and ESRB Everyone 10+ recommendations and describes mild combat violence. It also says multiplayer is off by default on child accounts, though parents should review account settings and the specific experience a child will play. Consult the Minecraft Parents’ Guide for the game’s own guidance.
