This ranking weighs encounter design, campaign depth, tactical readability, character progression, story, and accessibility—not a shared review score. Start with XCOM 2 for a broad squad-command package, Into the Breach for tight, readable battles, or Fire Emblem: Three Houses for tactics and character investment.
How this ranking works
These games share turn-based or otherwise deliberate tactical decision-making, but they do not offer the same kind of play. Some ask you to command a squad across a campaign and manage resources between fights; others concentrate on a handful of units in tightly constrained encounters. RPG systems, story choices, and ease of entry also vary. The order below is an editorial ranking for range and fit, not a claim that critics or players use one common scoring system.

1. XCOM 2
XCOM 2 is the strongest all-around choice here if you want squad tactics tied to a larger campaign. Its appeal is the combination of decisions made in individual ground engagements and strategic play from the Avenger. That broader layer gives victories and setbacks consequences beyond the current fight, making it a natural starting point for players who want both tactical encounters and campaign management.
#1 Best Overall
- Stratego is the strategic game where you challenge your opponents in the heat of battle
- Your task is to capture your opponent’s flag while defending your own
- Lead your men into battle, every move is crucial
- Includes 2 x 40 pre-printed playing pieces, Game board, Screen and 2 sorting trays for the pieces
- Suitable for 2 players, aged 8+
Nintendo’s Switch XCOM 2 Collection includes the base game, four DLC packs, and the War of the Chosen expansion. Confirm the contents of the specific platform edition you are considering rather than assuming every version is the same.
2. Into the Breach
Into the Breach is the pick for compact tactical puzzles. Enemies telegraph their attacks, so the challenge is to find a counter—often by moving or disrupting enemies—while protecting civilian buildings that power your mechs. The small, constrained encounters make it easier to see the consequences of a move than in a sprawling battlefield, but the decisions can still be demanding.
Subset Games developed and published the game; Steam lists its release date as February 27, 2018, and describes each run as a randomly generated challenge. The free Advanced Edition adds five mech squads and nearly forty weapons, along with additional enemies, bosses, objectives, pilots, and an “Unfair” mode. These additions expand the available challenges; they do not change the game’s core focus on readable enemy intentions and careful responses.

3. Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Choose Fire Emblem: Three Houses if developing characters and an army matters as much to you as winning battles. It is a Switch tactical RPG built around grid-based combat, a professor’s role, and a choice among three houses. The house premise gives the campaign a strong character focus, while army development supplies a progression layer between battles.
Its Divine Pulse rewind lets you undo a recent action, a useful safety valve when a decision goes wrong. That mechanic softens the cost of experimentation without removing the need to think through positioning and combat choices.
Rank #2
- EXPLORE THE ISLAND OF CATAN: Settle the uninhabited island of Catan by gathering resources, building infrastructure, and nurturing trade relationships.
- STRATEGY AND COMPETITION: Compete with 2-3 opponents to expand your settlements and cities while managing resources and avoiding the robber.
- TRADE, BUILD, AND SETTLE: Use brick, wood, wheat, ore, and sheep to construct roads, settlements, and cities in your race to 10 victory points.
- REPLAYABLE AND ENGAGING: With a modular hexagonal board, no two games are the same, offering endless strategic opportunities and replayability.
- FOR FAMILIES AND STRATEGY ENTHUSIASTS: Designed for 3-4 players, ages 10 and up, CATAN 6th Edition is perfect for family game nights and friendly competition. Add the CATAN 5-6 Player Extension (sold separately) to expand your game to 5-6 players.
4. Tactics Ogre: Reborn
Tactics Ogre: Reborn stands out for tactical RPG battles connected to branching story decisions. Nintendo describes 3D battlefields, choices that affect outcomes, and multiple paths and endings. Pick it when you want decisions outside combat to shape the story as well as tactical encounters to anchor play; the branching-story premise alone is not evidence that it is harder than the other games here.
5. Triangle Strategy
Triangle Strategy is the story-led recommendation for players drawn to political conflict alongside tactical battles. Pocket Tactics describes it as an HD-2D tactics game and political thriller. That description points to its distinctive presentation and narrative emphasis, rather than a measured consensus about its genre or quality.

For a sandbox-style firefight, consider Jagged Alliance 3. The comparison source positions it as a tactical option centered on that kind of open-ended combat. It is a useful contrast with the more tightly authored battle puzzles of Into the Breach or the character-led campaign structure of Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
7. Wasteland 3
Wasteland 3 is the choice for players who want tactics mixed with RPG choice and exploration. The cited comparison highlights that blend rather than presenting it as a pure battle-focused tactics game. Choose it if decisions and movement through the wider world are part of what you want from the experience, not just turn-by-turn combat.
8. Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp
Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp brings two strategy games together in a modernized Switch release. Pocket Tactics describes it as an HD remaster with added modes and enhancements. It belongs on a tactics shortlist for players interested in a pair of remastered strategy campaigns, rather than squad RPG progression as found in several higher-ranked choices.
Rank #3

Great game for couples, solo gamers, 2 players, family, and friends. Includes swift-start pack for first time player guidance.
9. Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope
Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is the accessible entry point among these recommendations. One comparison labels it a more accessible tactics option, while Pocket Tactics presents it as a sequel that improves on the 2017 collaboration. “Accessible” is an editorial judgment, not a measured difficulty result, but it is a sensible game to consider if you want a less intimidating way into tactical play.
10. SteamWorld Heist: Ultimate Edition
SteamWorld Heist: Ultimate Edition gives tactical shootouts a distinct hook: weapons are manually aimed, and bullets can bounce off surfaces for trick shots. Nintendo’s description makes clear why it differs from grid-combat RPGs: aiming itself is part of the tactical problem. Choose it if you want a battle-focused game where lines of fire and clever shots take center stage.

Other tactical games worth considering
Bad North
Bad North builds its tactical challenge around island geography. Nintendo says the islands are procedurally generated and players direct soldiers to exploit each island’s shape. It suits players who want to make high-level unit orders and adapt to the terrain, rather than micromanage a character-heavy RPG party.
Tactical Breach Wizards
Tactical Breach Wizards is another option for players who like puzzle-like encounters and a strong writing hook; PC Gamer highlights both qualities. The cited coverage does not establish current platform availability, so check a current storefront for the version you want.
